Activity Title: Antecedents
Objective: To identify the antecedent of the given noun in a sentence.
ANTECEDENTS are nouns (or words that take the place of nouns) for which pronouns stand.
Although indefinite pronouns do not require specific antecedents, they often have them.
NO SPECIFIC ANTECEDENTS: Nothing was achieved at the meeting.
Most turned right; few went left.
SPECIFIC ANTECEDENTS: One of the drivers was not careful.

LET’S PRACTICE! Write the antecedent of each underlined pronoun. If the antecedent is
implied, write implied.
Ex.) The candidate whom I voted lost the election.

3. How could Matt prove he wrote that paper himself?
4. Magnolias are trees that grow in the South. They produce beautiful white blossoms.

TASK 1: IDENTIFYING ANTECEDENTS: Write the antecedent of each underlined pronoun. If the
antecedent is implied, write implied.
1. As the boy bicycled down the road, he whistled.
2. Ann must get herself ready if she wants to be on time.
3. My father told me to give my sister her lunch.
4. It was my sister’s birthday, but the family gave her a present that was meant for me.
5. Jolina herself admitted to plan the prank.
6. Rayver thinks his new car looks very clean next to ours.
7. The three girls packed themselves plenty of food for their hike.
8. Those are the shoes want, but Mother says she will not buy them for me.
9. We rode in a taxicab whose driver drove expertly.
10. Deo connected his stereo and then sat listening to it.
TASK 2: Underline the pronoun/s in each sentence, and then identify its antecedent.
