The Margherita pizza was created in 1889 when an Italian chef made a pizza resembling the Italian flag for Queen Margherita of Savoy during her visit to Naples, using tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil to represent the colors of the flag. The queen later confirmed that this pizzeria was the originator of the Margherita pizza, and the restaurant where it was created in Naples remains open today.
