Arthur Ashe was the first African American tennis player to win Wimbledon and the US Open. He grew up in segregated Virginia and was inspired by his mother to take up tennis. Ashe received a tennis scholarship to UCLA and graduated in 1966 with a degree in business administration. He became the number one ranked tennis player in the world and won three Grand Slam singles titles before retiring. Ashe died of AIDS at age 49.
