PHILOSOPHERS ON EMPATHY

       Compassion

"...our capacity for empathy is the source of
that most precious of all qualities”- Dalai
              Lama

              Emotions developed cognitive component

MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.

“Is your heart right? If your heart isn’t right, fix it
         up today”

Fix your heart to feel the pain others do, to feel bad
for them, and to want to help them for an unselfish
                reason!

EMPATHY

Understanding and entering into another's feelings

The intellectual identification of the thoughts, feelings, or state of
another person; capacity to understand another person's point of view
or the result of such understanding

Reaching out to the “other” and then opening up to truly understand
each other. Use the empathy symbol to indicate your support for a
world in which we all can get along.

LOVE WORKS
LOVE WORKS
CINDY MIKUTA: INTERVIEW

LoveWorks director

Serving and Altruism: “Sometimes it's self serving, or for the
greater good, or even a faith based action or response.“

Serving: ”I know that I am a very selfish person, in my case it's
not altruism, it's more of a faith based response.”
WHERE COULD HOPE GO
       FROM HERE?

Me: “I can see Love Works being an every day ministry, having service projects for teens after
school, or adults during the evening, and even retired people during the day.”

Cindy:”More of a percentage actively participating on a regular basis. I'd like to see serving go
from something that's convenient to do, to something that's part of their relationship with God
as praying or worshiping. On a mission plan, I'd like to see us funded, and a director position
paid. Branching out to 501C organizations, and the furniture ministry to be it's own
organization. Project Leaders. “
Act as if what you do makes a
     difference. It does.

Editor's Notes

  1. \n
  2. The compassion and care of others welfare affects how you treat them. If you love someone, or feel bad for them, you are more likely to “serve” them. \n
  3. Service gives me something to do that makes me feel good about myself. It helps people and shows people a caring feeling. When I see people happy it’s an amazing feeling to know that my service did that. I’ve always been offered to do service, and that has shown ways that i never though i could do things.\n
  4. To have concern selflessly for others feelings.\nBeing able to feel a certain compassion for other people that you start to feel sorry for them. \n
  5. To do service in an altruistic way. Doing things to help the community or people in the community, usually a physical way of helping (painting, building, moving)\n
  6. People want things to change, no matter good or bad, if you care that much that you want it changed, DO SOMETHING!\n
  7. The Dali Lama feel that compassion is the most important quality when it comes to feeling empathetic. If people are having that feeling to feel bad for someone, they are also prone to feeling compassionate. \n
  8. You need to not be selfish and start to feel bad for people, have pity on them in a time of trouble. try to feel their pain and want to help them, to actually help them, not for your own benefit\n
  9. Having feelings for how other people feel, (tie in) having empathy and feeling bad for someone, while also trying to understand how they feel, gives you the feeling to want to help them, which can be seen as community service.\n
  10. having empathy towards someone in need gives you a good feeling, but when you only care for their need, that is altruism\nhaving empathy towards someone who is upset/general is more for a rewards (i helped you feel better, what does that give me)\n
  11. when we have our own feelings, we have emotions-when we see others emotions, it effects our own\nif you lack theory of mind (ability to attribute mental states—beliefs, intents, desires, pretending, knowledge, etc.—to oneself and others and to understand that others have beliefs, desires and intentions that are different from one's own) you only care about yourself and your own feelings\n
  12. with empathy you can feel others emotions, as long as you know why they are sad and the details behind it\nconduct disorder is feeling others emotions, but directly (if someone is angry, you lash out. if someone is sad, you cry-INTENTLY)\n
  13. An altruistic behavior is formed around doing something for someone else. Altruism is more of an observed behavior, not mental. Some altruistic behavior is at times idealistic and romanticized. Altruism is promoted by several important variables: the ability to be empathetic, to understand the perspective of others feelings of personal efficacy and self-esteem being able to form meaningful relationships.\n
  14. when you do service, you’re more apt when you feel bad for the person (we have food, we feed the hungry-we have homes, you help the homeless). It may not being getting out there and doing “community service” exactly, but it’s still a way to help and just like that fund, the money can help others do the service with the people the money go towards. \n

  34. I feel a service learning course should be provided in all high school’s. It gives you opportunity outside the classroom and you’re still able to learn, especially if incorporated in the education system (working with students). 37. If we imagine that life is so simple. Than everyone could be happy. Not expecting a huge gesture just to have even a glance of a smile.
