1. CANBERRA
Canberra is the capital of Australia with a population of over 345.000
inhabitants. In Aboriginal means “meeting place”.
LOCATION: Is in the Australian Capital Territory located in the
northern part of the same, 300 kilometers southwest of Sydney and
650 kilometers northeast of Melbourne.
ESTRUCUTRE’S CITY: It is different from other Australian cities
because it was built from scratch. The architect Walter Burley Griffin
of Chicago was who design the city and began in 1913. The design of
the city was influenced by the movement “garden city” so Canberra
gets the title “bush capital”.
CLIMATE: Canberra has a relatively dry continental climate with four
seasons. Canberra alternates hot and dry summers and cold winters
with occasional snowfall. The maximum temperature recorded were
42.2ºC on 1 February (summer) 1967 and the minimum was -10ºC on
11 July (winter) 1971.
MONUMENTS: In Canberra there is the Australian War Memorial, a
monument erected in honor of Australian soldiers who have died in
various wars in which Australia has taken part.
And the Parliament House which is the meeting facility of the
Parliament of Australia. It has 4.700 rooms and many areas are open
to the public.
HOLIDAYS AND TRADITIONS: The national day on 26 January, the
Canberra’s Day on 21 March and on 26 April is the Anzac Day, it
remembered the first action of Australian soldiers in World War I.
