2. The Commutative Property
In addition, the order of the terms does not
matter.

5. The Associative Property
In addition, the grouping of the terms does not
matter.

• (1 + 2) + 3 = 1 + (2 + 3) • (a + b) + c = a + (b + c)
• (3 + 8) + 2 = 3 + (8 + 2)
Note: When we combine like terms, the
coefficient and its sign stay with the variable.
