Robin Hood: Class and Status
In the clip, the peasant’s costume and make-up represents him as low class. He wears dirty, khaki
coloured rags and is unshaven showing he does not have the ability to keep his appearance tidy.
While running away from the antagonists (knights), the incidental music is tense as it consists of
short, fast, loud beats which matches his pace of running. When captured by the knights, his mode
of address is panicked and desperate as he is begging. His dialogue tells us ‘Please, no, I need my
hand’. This shows that he is in a vulnerable position, representing him as inferior.
The knights are represented as high class. We see this from their costume as they wear black
clothing, armour and a helmet representing evil and strength. The leader’s dialogue represents him
as controlling for example he orders his men to ‘Hold him!’ His mode of address is stern and loud
which shows that he is serious. Although the other knights are of a high class, they have as lower
status than the main knight, for example, they say ‘they’ve got us surrounded, sir’. This shows that
they followers and are well-ordered by him.
Before Robin Hood is seen, he shoots a number of arrows at a knight’s hand. The arrows are a key
prop as they represent strength and superiority against the antagonists. An example of diegetic
sound in this part of the clip is an exaggerated sound of arrows flying through the wind. His dialogue
is strong and commanding, for example, ‘let this man feed his wife’. Even though he is shouting, his
mode of address is calm. When we see him, it is through a long shot, showing us where he has come
from.
The setting is in the woods giving a natural light adding realism. The ambient sound of leaves rustling
on the floor also adds to this.
