Dr. Oz: Tory Johnson's 80-pound weight loss and artificial sweetener causes diabetes
Dr. Mehmet Oz said artificial sweeteners can cause diabetes and discussed Tory Johnson's 80-pound
weight loss on the Oct. 8 episode of the Dr. Oz Show.
Sherri Shepherd also appeared on the show. Sherri recently lost 66 pounds and reversed her
diabetes on a low-carb, sugar-free diet.
Aspartame, sucralose and saccharine -- the three most popular sugar substitutes in America -- affect
our gut bacteria, making them more likely to raise our blood sugar (the main cause of diabetes),
according to new studies.
Dr. Oz said artificial sweeteners often trick your body into overeating. He said when you consume an
artificial sweetener, taste receptors in your esophagus and stomach get stimulated, and your
pancreas release insulin in anticipation of receiving something sweet. Insulin signals your body to
store fat.
Meanwhile, your brain's satiety center waits for cues to determine whether you've received calories.
But since artificial sweeteners have no calories, your brain gets confused because it has been
tricked.
Dr. Oz said these confusing signals trigger sugar cravings, increase your appetite, destroy your
metabolism and cause weight gain. What's more, because artificial sweeteners are 100 to 600 times
sweeter than real sugar, your taste buds gradually become desensitized, making you crave even
more sugar.
Tory Johnson's 80-Pound Weight Loss; Sherri Shepherd Lost 66 Pounds
Dr. Oz also spoke to former "View" host Sherri Shepherd, who revealed how she beat diabetes and
lost 66 pounds on her low-carb, sugar-free Plan D diet. She detailed her weight loss, diet and
workout secrets in her book, Plan D: How to Lose Weight and Beat Diabetes.
On a separate segment, "Good Morning America" anchor Tory Johnson revealed how she overcame
emotional overeating and lost 80 pounds. Johnson began her weight loss journey last year after
being told by an ABC News executive that she could lose her TV job if she didn't slim down.
Tory said that conversation motivated her to immediately start a low-carb diet and begin exercising
regularly. Johnson detailed her weight loss transformation in her New York Times bestseller, The
Shift.
Tory, who had struggled with weight her entire life, said losing weight is a mental process more than
a physical one. Seeing food as fuel (instead of something to turn to when she's bored or unhappy)
helped Tory embrace healthy eating as a lifestyle, not a short-term fix.
In addition to eating less and making healthier choices, Johnson began running in Central Park a few
days a week and now walks on the treadmill in her bedroom. Johnson feels and looks amazing and
said it's never too late to get healthy and fit. She made the shift, and so can you.
