2. Learning Objectives
To learn a reading technique to improve
understanding of a story
To apply and practice to refine the technique
learnt
3. How do you read?
You have read a reasonable number of stories
already; if not, you will be reading more often
as you are grow older. Some questions to think
about reading:
1)What special way do you use to help you
understand the stories you have read?
2)What do you do to help you remember the
words you have read?
If you can remember the words you have learnt,
you have just improve on your vocabulary and
you are able to use them in the future!
4. Reading Strategy – KWL
• What's a strategy? It is a method to help you to
do things easier, faster and better. A reading
strategy helps you to read faster & easier
• Called KWL, this strategy helps you to
understand the text and remember more!
• KWL represents:
Your knowledge
Your wish
Your learning
5. Reading Strategy – KWL
Knowledge – what you already know. This is
your own knowledge, about the topic after you
have highlighted the key words.
Wish – what you wish to find out about the story.
This is to prepare your minds to discover new
information you have yet to find out.
Learning – what you have learnt. After reading,
write down what you have learnt – new words or
moral of the story – to help you remember them.
6. KWL
The Lion's Share
“The Lion once went hunting along with the Fox, the
Jackal, and the Wolf. They hunted and they hunted till
at last they surprised a Stag, and soon took its life.
Then came the question how the spoil should be
divided. 'Quarter me this Stag,' roared the Lion. But
because the animals are afraid of the lion, they gave
everything.”
K – the lion is a fierce animal.
W – is he going to eat everything?
L – I learned that lion's share means a large portion of a
reward or profit as the lion ate everything.
7. Reading Strategy using KWL
Technique behind KWL strategy:
This strategy relies on how your brain learns –
that it learn new things by combining it with
existing things you know already in groups or
categories.
By thinking about what you know and wish to
know (K & W), you are preparing your mind to
combine new information, like a warm-up
before a run.
By writing down what you have learnt (L), you
are storing new information into memory.
8. In Summary
The strategy that you is used by many readers
and proven to work.
They work because they are rooted in scientific
principles of how reading (and by implication,
your brain) works.
By practicing this strategy regularly, you
should see your comprehension scores improve
over time.
