5) Explain the difference of the structure of carbohydrates and proteins. Your answer
   should also include a diagram.

Carbohydrates are made of large chains of identical sugar molecules

Proteins are made of large chains of different molecules called amino acid

                                                                                                      (7 marks)

6) What do we mean by “digestion of food”? Why do we need to digest our food?

Digestion is the process of breaking large molecules of food to smaller molecules of food
The large molecules are insoluble, which means they do not dissolve in water. The small molecules
we produce in digestion are soluble, which means they dissolve in water so they pass through the
small intestine and into the blood
                                                                                                      (4 marks)

10) Describe in detail what happens to food in the digestive system.
(Hint! You should include all the processes that occur in different parts of digestive
      system starting from the mouth)

     - Food is firstly broken down (mechanical breakdown) into smaller parts by the teeth in the mouth.
It is then mixed with saliva and swallowed.
     - Food enters the stomach, which is basically a muscular bag, filled with hydrochloric acid (HCl).
Here food is chemically break down
     - Food enters the small intestine from the stomach. It passes along the small intestine where the
soluble food is taken into the blood through the walls.
     - The remains of the food are then passed on to large intestine. All that is left is waste material and
water. The body will want to leave the waste material within the digestive system but the water is
valuable and so it is re-absorbed here. The waste material is passed to the rectum where it is stored
until it leaves the body through the anus

                                                                                                               (10 marks)

Your answer should also include a diagram. Carbohydrates are made of large chains of identical sugar molecules Proteins are made of large chains of different molecules called amino acid (7 marks) 6) What do we mean by “digestion of food”? Why do we need to digest our food? Digestion is the process of breaking large molecules of food to smaller molecules of food The large molecules are insoluble, which means they do not dissolve in water. The small molecules we produce in digestion are soluble, which means they dissolve in water so they pass through the small intestine and into the blood (4 marks) TOTAL MARKS /19 7) Complete the following sentences using the words in the brackets below. There are some extra words that you will not use. Page 2 of 6

  • 4. a) Carbohydrase: (6 marks) Breaks down carbohydrates into smaller sugar molecules b) Protease: Breaks down proteins into amino acids c) Lipase: Breaks down fats into smaller fatty acids and glycerol 10) Describe in detail what happens to food in the digestive system. (Hint! You should include all the processes that occur in different parts of digestive system starting from the mouth) - Food is firstly broken down (mechanical breakdown) into smaller parts by the teeth in the mouth. It is then mixed with saliva and swallowed. - Food enters the stomach, which is basically a muscular bag, filled with hydrochloric acid (HCl). Here food is chemically break down - Food enters the small intestine from the stomach. It passes along the small intestine where the soluble food is taken into the blood through the walls. - The remains of the food are then passed on to large intestine. All that is left is waste material and water. The body will want to leave the waste material within the digestive system but the water is valuable and so it is re-absorbed here. The waste material is passed to the rectum where it is stored until it leaves the body through the anus (10 marks) TOTAL MARKS /16 11) True (T) or False (F) a) Carbohydrates, proteins and fat are insoluble - T (1 marks) b) Large insoluble substances are broken down into smaller insoluble substances - F (1 marks) c) The wall of the stomach absorbs digested food - F (1 marks) d) In the large intestine much of the water is absorbed back into the blood stream - T (1 marks) e) The indigestible food goes back to the stomach to be chemically broken down by hydrochloric acid - F (1 marks) f) It is better if we don’t include any fats in our diet - F (1 marks) g) If you want to lose weight you should not eat carbohydrates which are full of energy - F (1 marks) Page 4 of 6
