Kyla Terhune, MD

Interview
 #1: Undergraduate applying for med school
 Rising sophomore
 Biochemistry Major
 #2: Current medical student
 Current 3rd Year med student
 Originally from Africa
 Focus time period: application to med school
#1: Say
 Originally decided to attend med school because of
influence of Aunt at age 12
 Watched ER on television
 Likely the aspect of being “on your toes”
 Volunteered at Ronald McDonald House
 Spent current summer “shadowing”
 Anticipates liking medicine “as long as I don’t have to
use O-Chem”
#1: Say (cont.)
 Can meet with premed advisors in freshman year, not
important until sophomore year
 Met with his biology professor (not an MD) who is a
pre-med advisor
 Concerned about the application process being “a
lengthy one”
 Concerned about deciding what type of medicine
 50 premed out of class of 1000
 Most of his connection to medical world is through
Aunt
#2: Do
 Followed and sat quietly.
 Asked very few questions.
 Seemed intent and interested.
 Appeared to be very astute and picked up on details
easily.
 Appeared very grateful for the opportunity.
 Volunteered to come in early and come in an extra day.
 Is a resident advisor at undergrad.
#3: Think
 Seems to think that medicine is a good profession for
him.
 Seems to think that the idea of thinking on one’s feet
would be exciting for him.
 Seems to think that the process is going to be a long
one.
 Seems to think that all the steps are going to fall into
place though
#4: Feel
 Feels like things are in place now
 Feels though that there is a degree of uncertainly
ahead
 Feels as though it is not overwhelming right now but it
may be overwhelming in the future
 Feels as though non-MD faculty will correctly advise
him as he applies but is not sure
 Feels a great deal of trust in undergrad system but also
feels uncertainty with the process
Problem Statement:
 A young, well-meaning, astute, intelligent, quiet,
driven sophomore biochemistry major needs a way
to ensure proper advising during the application
process to medical school because the current
advising system consists largely of science professors
who are academic but not medical and contact while
in the throes of undergrad is minimal with the
actual medical world.
