HANDCRAFTED
FASHION
-KRISHNI MISHRA
Hand crafted fashion is all the rage and highly in demand especially in this digital
era where off the rack clothing has flooded the mass market thereby increasing the
value of these handcrafted clothing pieces. The current refashioning and desire for
handcrafted ensembles has brought in vogue hand knitting, embroidery, crochet,
macrame and many more crafts into the mainstream fashion world creating such a
buzz among designers and customers as never seen before. Moreover hand crafted
fashion is environment friendly and does good to support small artisans and
manufacturers.

It happens that some fabrics created through hand-knitting
can be simulated by an automated process. But not
everything that can be hand-knit can be automated.
Handcrafted fashion has made a massive comeback in
comparison to any other trend and is no longer more
valued or desired only by aristocrats and the bourgeoisie
who preferred things produced by hand since they came to
symbolize class, were better finished, indirectly produced
and carefully designed, but now both ordinary individuals
and households are also engaging in producing special
handcrafted clothes for themselves as well as for the
market demand. An excellent example would be of the
craft of appliqué pattern-making technique often used by
fabric artists and fashion designers.

3. Fast fashion has pushed people to the
realization that handcrafted clothes
not copyable by machines, are unique
in their imperfections as well.
Designers and fashion houses employ
skilled artisans to create authentic and
valuable pieces, putting out
spectacular runway looks which
influences daily fashion choices of
people.
Like yoga or meditation, needlework’s
repetitive action has been shown to
induce a relaxed state, and can lower
heart rate and blood pressure and is
seen as a way to combat anxieties
about technology.
Buying handmade ensures traditional
craft skills are kept alive and creates a
demand for education in these skills.
Whether real or suggested, the aesthetic of
craft is all over the runways. Both Jill
Sander and Stella McCartney channeled
macramé, while Dior incorporated
patchwork and Calvin Klein, quilting.
Ribbons turned up at Dolce & Gabbana,
Chanel and Christopher Kane and floral
needlepoint at Alexander McQueen.
The craft economy is
seen as a maturation
of the DIY movement
and exports continue to
grow for high value-
added crafts products.

Handcrafts and India
Handcraft contains plenty
of implicit data which
grows every year, aboard
with skills. The order and
apprentice system has
been widely used to
transfer skills and implicit
data and is an astounding
section in modern Indian
times, which slowly has
taken in a cosmopolitan
appearance.
The Handicrafts Sector plays a
significant & important role in the
country's economy. It provides
employment to a vast segment of
craft persons in rural & semi urban
areas and generates substantial
foreign exchange for the country,
while preserving its cultural
heritage.

Be it phulkari, chickankari

sophisticated fashion
looks, can perhaps only
be described after a
thorough admiration.

Thus it is not just about the look or the end
product, but also the hard work, time spent,
patience and the cultural value of these
handcrafts, that make them such timeless pieces.
