History Battle of Frenchtown during the War of 1812 The area of Frenchtown served as a stepping stone for the American forces to retake Detroit, and this led to the devastating Battle of Frenchtown in January 1813. Named after President James Monroe when he was president George Armstrong Custer Commander in the American Civil War and the Indian Wars Custer spent much of his boyhood living in Monroe Monroe is also recognized as the home of the La-Z Boy world headquarters
