Editor's Notes
Its Thursday morning, and we have all finished our breakfast.
`My name is Kevin.
Your conference organizers asked me to share some insight into Entrepreneurship with you today.
I started my first business when I was just out of college. I have built startups that have made it and been sold. I have build startups that failed. I have invested time and money in ideas that have worked, and those that have not. Along the way I have sold 4 companies, and today I am running the most recent of these as a R&D center for a publicly traded company. I published a book about these experiences, and have written about entrepreneurship for the Wall Street Journal and Forbes. –
With all this, I had a presentation for you all that I have given to groups many times, and on the plane up to here from Austin yesterday I threw it out because we all want to share the big picture. I think that we are going to have some fun talking about how Experts become entrepreneurs and get into action changing the world around them.
We are going to explore the journey from expert to entrepreneur.
the map ahead
3 most important challenges for people like you that want to take the leap to create something uniquely their own to share with the world.
the entrepreneur’s journey is really the journey and the story of all of our lives, written in large letters.
A difference for you, a difference for your families, and most of all a difference for the people that you impact by sharing your passion.
you have skills, and you may be thinking about how to best use them.
Now you view the world differently . That is what being an 'expert' is.
Now you may be thinking what the next step is?
Isn’t that what we are all doing all the time? Wondering what will happen next?
what you would be willing to do for free.
What people will pay you for.
That is what I literally did.
I Learned a lot, and fueled what I would do later in powerful ways.
Something we will see throughout this story: Journeys and movement.
Business is flow. It is movement.
Underlying all of this, human need, thought and Emotional cause movement of people.
We are starting a business. This is a big deal. We are taking what we know and we are going to change people's lives in big or small ways, and support ourselves while doing so.
every journey has a map, let's look at ours
Take a moment to imagine…
In literature, big journeys take us from safety to tough times. That is the way it was for me.
Eventually made it. But only possible because of the journey and that starting point (and the despair) of having nothing to begin with. Having nothing teaches you a lot.
In nothingness are the seeds of great things.
Starting a health magazine, creating a new supplement, opening a consultancy.
Like spinning your hand in a basin of water.
Companies are like this.
Our bodies are like this.
Entrepreneurs diliberately create patterns in time and space like this. It’s beautiful.
You’re an expert
See beyond your expertise.
Communication. Marketing. Law. Finance. Managing people. M&A
become expert in many other fields – like it or not.
Purists who stick to their expertise only get themselves into the worst kind of trouble
In the end all the domains resolve as 1 thing, 1 complex verb, a happening.
The transition from expert to entrepreneur also distinguishes itself in another way. Think of a boat. There are passengers, and then there are those rowing the boat (or building it). There is a huge difference in mindset. Doers. Responsible. No back up. Entrepreneur mentality is ownership mentality. Everything is your job, even if it isn’t. In companies this is the same.
Imagine your idea – what you want to build.
Money, people, work, build a product. Big woop.t
This gets you out onto the ice, but it is your starting point.
This is the minimum qualification for being an entrepreneur
Entering into the market, this is your challenge. To answer this question effectively.
To get in front of the right people and then move them.
\why should anyone care?
The technician: Finance story Raj.
Can you answer this questions? Take a moment and reflect on it. Write it down. Come back to it when you get home tonight. This question may be both the simplist and most difficult one you will ever be asked as an entrepreneur.
Entrepreneurship has within it the the consumer’s journey.
Drawing in and engaging
Create movement. HARD WORK.Money. Time.
Attention economy.
This customer journey depends on how you communicate – and answer the question of why you matter.
What makes great communication? If you answer the questions your customers have effectively what does it look like?
Like voyager probe. Though marketing media. Through distance. Through time. Through adverse conditions.
Will they remember in 5 minutes? Will they remember in a day, a week a month? Three months later will they remember and be able to tell someone else? Penny story
Dozens of reasons.
storytelling becomes a mess
Getting your story straight is like preparing for a trip.
Simply throw it? You need tools.
Put it into something that has a handle on it.. Something with a handle can be picked up. It can be carried to the airport. It can be handed to somebody else – and they can carry it. They can even hand it to somebody else. This is what effective packing does for you. For your answer to the question “why you”, when it works it is short, meaningful, distinct, and memorable. What does amazon do? They sell everything, A->Z. Zappos? Service. Lexus? Pursuit of perfection. Timex? Keeps a licking and keeps on ticking. Nike? Coke? Smile, happiness and moments with friends. The whale hunter.
Where you touch the minds and hearts of your customer.
Surface area. Like leaves on plants gathering sunlight. Like the surface of the lungs transpiring air.
Communication, how it is formatted, and where it is sent does this for your business.
competing .Getting an opening
How would you open a pizza business in terms of messaging?
Pizza example. Price. Flavor. Delivery. Ingredients. Quality. Style.
Then marketing channels – radio,tv,print,digital.
No easy way. This was killing my online real estate startup.
Traditional positioning got us acquired by a larger competitor. No use in B2C. Attention economy was too tough.
Pizza example: airport.
Just have a sign that says “Pizza”. Customers lined up.
We did this with Google in real estate: Our moment is when people ask the question of “where” and type it in their browser. Our mission is to “always be on the page”. And it worked. Now 30mm families a year use us.
This is where it gets personal. What is the meaning you want to achieve?
The game we all play.
“What happens next”.
The reason for all education. Entrepreneurs get to play this in a bigger way. About creation.
What you can do in the next moment can be extraordinary.
The potential field. It’s the sum of all the possibilities.
You can touch the moon. To feel that connection of possibllity, if only for a moment, changes everything.
Imagining what you want to accomplish.
Quiet place.
Become a time traveler. Come back. Go there, find the best bits of many possible worlds and put them together into a picture that has meaning for you. populating that place, and coming back to the present. Doing this in a deep, quiet, and profound way is the start of a journey of unfolding and of curiousity. For me, feeling the possibilities, and coming back to the present moment is the starting point for miraculous things. No work. Constant motion, and a sense of being carried along by the unfolding of it all. This can be your story too.
