2. Personalised number plates have an interesting history. Enjoyed by the rich and
famous, and used to make a powerful statement, each plate carries its own special
value. Here are a few fascinating facts about them…
INTRODUCTION
3. The power of 1
1. Just 1, and nothing else. This is the plate widely considered to be the most expensive
plate in the world. It was sold in Abu Dhabi for Dh31 million – that’s more than
£6,000,000! Abdullah Al Mahri was “proud” and “happy” to get his hands on this
special plate.
4. TOP INVESTMENTS
Personalised registrations can prove to be very good investments. For example, 1A
sold for £160,000 at an auction in 1989, but were it to go on sale again now would
likely fetch at least £300,000!
5. NO OFFENCE
The DVLA does not like a personalised registration to look offensive. They will not
permit any registration that may be considered rude or offensive to be released
(although with some creative combinations of letters and numbers it’s still possible!)
6. BANNED REGISTRATIONS
The J1 HAD registration was banned as soon as the J registrations were released in
1991 because it looked like jihad, which for some carries negative connotations. Other
banned registrations include DR12 UGS, and H8 GAY.
7. CELEBRITY PLATE T8
The earliest known ‘celebrity’ registration was T8, owned by music hall artist Harry
Tate.
Currently it’s owned by Johnny Tate of the Tate and Lyle sugar company.
8. ROBBIE’S SORRY!
Performer Robbie Williams purchased the registration S8 RRY for his Ferrari. It was his
cheeky way of apologising to fans for spending too much money on a new car!
