MYTHS
2. DEFINING TERM
MYTH
Literally a story, meaning ancient or traditional stories that contain significant cultural meaning
often conveyed through supernatural characters instead of events (david matsumato 2009)
In Zambian luvale tradition of zambezi district its believed that men should not eat soup as its
believed to delay wound healing especially after circumcision. Well this isn’t scientifically true
as soup especially from meats is rich in proteins that are necessary for wound healing. Maybe
the myth was to encourage the adults to leave the soup for the children who would not
otherwise partake of the meat.
Generally, in most Zambian tradition it was believed that women shouldn’t eat eggs as this
might result in them giving birth to a bald baby. Not true in any way , could have been a
strategy of keeping a craving gravid woman from finishing the eggs that were supposed to
increase the number of poultry.
Conclusion
Myths are might not be real but they serve a purpose in conveying timeless and universal themes,
which are relevant both in the art of story-telling and in portraying the human experience. They
give insights into the values and perspective of long gone culture.
