1. Evaluation
My preliminary task went as well as it could despite many issues we had previously
consisting of problems with location, actors and time. I think our film has fluid ‘match on
action’, especially when the character is walking through the hall way with a low angle and
then a shot of him coming out from around the corner into the gym. I also think the actors
did a very good job and made the plot feel realistic, this will improve the film greatly as it
makes it look more convincing and professional to any viewers. Also the mis-en-scene
worked well as even though it was short notice to our group it was still convincing to our
group and fit the plot of our short film. The editing also went well for our group as we took
to it quickly while developing new skills along the way that will help for future media tasks.
My group made a couple of mistakes that we have learnt from including the fact that the
boom was accidentally in shot in one of the scenes making it look unprofessional. I also
think that my group didn’t film enough so when it came to editing we didn’t have enough to
work with so in the future we will make sure to film the main scenes at least twice so we
have some options to choose from when editing. My group learned a lot from filming our
task that we will have learned from to make sure we don’t make the same mistakes in our
main task. These include timing, actors and location. I chose these because we didn’t
allocate enough time to filming therefor we were rushed in the process, I think if we had
more time we would of produced a much better quality of work. I chose actors because we
have realised that it is important to think about how available the actors can make
themselves so that there are no issues with arranging dates and also we had problems with
our location as we had to change it twice because of lack of availability. Therefore in the
future my group will be more prepared for inconvenient circumstances.
When it came to meeting the brief my group did quite well however there were some
issues. The finished short film included a character walking into a room, sitting opposite
another character and exchanging a few lines with of dialogue with him. We also did match
on action which worked well with the structure of our film and was one of the best scenes
included in it. However we did not do shot/reverse/shot because of a lack of time and
availability of the actors made if difficult. This gave us no opportunity to use shot reverse
shot in our film either which was a shame as it would have made the clip appear more
professional to the viewer. Even though we missed some important shots out I think that we
met the brief fairly well by keeping it interesting to the viewer.
I think we displayed some effective technical skills in our film, however it would have been
better if we included shots such as, shot/reverse/shot; this would of enables us to film the
conversation showing it from both of the character sides. This would have made it look
more professional however time constraints prevented us from doing this.
I think that my group’s short film followed institutional conventions when it came to editing
in titles as we included the vital information for the audience including, the film title as the
beginning of the film, and at the end of we film we included the creators of the film of one
slide and the actors of the film on the other. The theme we went for when displaying our
titles was white on black as it appears professional, smart and it doesn’t look too busy on
2. the screen. I think it fits the content of our film as implies a masculine vibe before the film
even starts giving the audience an impression of what the tone of the film will be like.
My short film consists of only diegetic sound however we did edit it slightly by making the
tempo of the sound match the action and on one occasion we slowed the sound of the
characters breathing down when he is exercising to represent him being tired and feeling
weak after exercising.
I think we have played close attention to mis-en-scene because setting it in a gym we have
created a stereotypical masculine environment which fits the context and content of our
play as it is giving the viewers an insight into a dramatic setting focussing on boys/men for a
change as usually these type of scenes feature around women which makes for an
interesting plot.
We have edited our sound subtly to make it clear and the volume quite
consistent throughout of film making it sound professional and clear to
the viewer.
We kept shooting material appropriate to the task set by using controlled
use of camera angles, attention to framing and variety of shot distances.
We kept the shots controlled and relevant by using different techniques
such as in 0:17 seconds into our film we used a high angle to represent
that the character was in a vulnerable position. Then in 0:20 seconds into
the clip we filmed the other charectar with a low angle and in center of
shot representing his power in the situation.
Then when the charectars sit down to have a conversation the camera zooms in to show
facial expressions so that the viewers get a full imact of what they are saying and so that the
charectars reactions are clear to the audience. We see this 0:38 seconds into the film.
The editing we have used is apparent to the veiwer as in the fist two seconds of the clip
there is a flash to emphisise that what the veiwer is watching is a flashback. We have also
edited to show mathc on action in 0:22 seconds into the clip to make it clar what the
charectar is doing and also so it looks fluid to the audience making it look proffesional.
