2. Definition of Admission
• Admission is defined as allowing a patient to stay in
hospital for observation, investigation, treatment and
care.
• Admission is the entry of a patient into a
hospital/ward for therapeutic/diagnostic.
3. Purpose:
• To provide comfort & safety.
• To provide immediate care.
• To be ready for emergency.
• To assist patient in adjusting in hospital
environment.
• To acquire vital information.
• To obtain information about patient such as
personnel information.
• To establish nurse-patient relationship.
4. Principles:
Sudden changes or strangeness in the environment procedure
fear & anxiety.
Entering the hospital is a threat to one’s personal identity.
People have diversity of habits & behaviors.
Illness can be novel experience for the client & bring stress on
his physical and mental health.
5. Types of admission
• Patients are admitted in acute conditions requiring
immediate treatment.
e.g.-Accident, poisoning and burn case.
Emergency
admission
• Patient are admitted for investigation, medical or
surgical treatments. treatment is given according to
patient problems.
e.g.- patient with hypertension, diabetes and bronchitis

• Transporting the client from OPD to IPD

• UNIT: It is a place where the patient is kept during
hospital stay.

9. Preparation of articles for admitting the patient
ARTICLES
• All articles for an open bed-bottom
sheet, draw sheet, mackintosh, top
sheet, blanket.
• Two bed sheets.
• Hot water bags in cold weather.
• Other articles required for daily care
of patient. e.g.-temperature, sponge
bath, stethoscope
RATIONALE
• To keep the bed ready to receive the
patient in a calm manner.
• To cover the bed and another to cover
the patient.
• To keep the bed warm before hand.
• To be ready to give care to the patient.

• Facilitate admission to patients in a care setting to

• Make proper observation of patient condition.
• Develop health care nursing plans.
• Recognize the various needs of the patient.
• Nurse should address the patient by their name.
• Deal with patients very carefully who are suffering
from communicable disease.
