History of Recorded Sound at the
     Belfer Audio Archives
           Spring 2011
    The SU Library audio
     archive was founded
     in 1963, when the
     Joseph and Max Bell
     collection of 150,000
     sound records was
     purchased for
     $100,000.
    Under the founding
     leadership of Walter
     Welch (1963-1991) the
     archive grew.
    The Belfer Audio
     Laboratory and Archive
     was opened in 1982.
     Some pre-existing spaces
     were retrofitted for the
     collections. Offices, a Live
     End-Dead End recordings
     studio with dual control
     rooms was built.
    The studios were built
     specifically to allow
     analog rerecording of
     cylinders and diamond
     discs on their the original
     phonographs.
