2. The SU Library audio
archive was founded
in 1963, when the
Joseph and Max Bell
collection of 150,000
sound records was
purchased for
$100,000.
Under the founding
leadership of Walter
Welch (1963-1991) the
archive grew.
3. The Belfer Audio
Laboratory and Archive
was opened in 1982.
Some pre-existing spaces
were retrofitted for the
collections. Offices, a Live
End-Dead End recordings
studio with dual control
rooms was built.
The studios were built
specifically to allow
analog rerecording of
cylinders and diamond
discs on their the original
phonographs.
