Controls
The ZF Mathers 9000 series control system is a single lever electronic control system
designed for precise, instant control of mechanical engines and gears or a mechanical
and electronic throttle/shift combination. The system is easy to install with optional plug
connectors and easy to route wires for control of up to 9 stations. The 9000 series system
is compatible with gas or diesel, inboard, I/O’s or outboard engines.
All ZF control heads incorporate single-lever control of direction and speed, built in station transfer button,
station in-command /synchronization indicator lights and audible warning indicator. Control heads are
available with port or starboard levers (on single engine controls) and with or without plug-in connectors.
All standard control heads are salt, spray and corrosion resistant.

with a selection of optional handle styles.

ZF Mathers Trolling Valve Control Actuator
For vessels equipped with mechanical trolling valves the ZF troll
actuator incorporates precise, safe, and adjustable operation of the
valves into a ZF 9000 series control system. By merely turning
the trolling actuator on via your existing control transfer button
the trolling valve is put into maximum slip mode. By advancing
the control lever, propeller speed increases until full lock-up is
achieved. The percentage and range of clutch slip as well as the
throttle range are adjustable.

ZF Mathers Remote Engine Controls
This portable lightweight and fully waterproof
unit offers walkabout convenience
along with the same standard
head. Built in safety features
include an emergency engine
stop button, in-command
indicator light, and a wrist
strap kill switch safety lanyard.
If the lanyard becomes detached, the remote immediately puts the
engine in idle and shifts the transmission to neutral. Others features

MT-3 Controls
Top or binnacle mounted control provides one-
handed positive engine control with excellent control
feel characteristics. Recommended for single station
applications only. Single and twin engine, inboard,
outboard and I/O, diesel or gasoline react quickly
and positively to MT-3 controls. Start and warm-up
operations are carried out with hand lever pulled out
at neutral detent position to give throttle action with
clutch disengaged. Return to neutral re-engages
clutch function. Forward, reverse and neutral
detents on single and twin models. Built-in friction
drag prevents slippage and throttle creep while
under way. Die cast handle and housing are heavily
chrome plated.

Kobelt Ball End
Rod ball ends are commonly used to connect a push-pull
cable to the engine or clutch. The rod ball end is screwed
onto the end of the cable, and the rod ball end uses a bolt
through the ball end that attaches it to a lever.

Made from all die cast bronze and stainless
steel hardware. A two station, single engine
control system that requires only 2 control
heads and 4 cables and both handles will move
together. Available in two systems - one for
single engine applications and one for twin
engine applications. Each system consists of 1
master control head and one slave. Adapter kits
are required, one for each cable, to connect cables to the master
control. Order kit no. 2046-0901 for 33 cable and kit no. 2046-0902
for 43 cable. The control heads contain all the necessary parts to
attach these interconnecting cables. All control heads are chrome

If you removed the old cable, measure for the replacement cable as follows:
For Rotary Steering Cable Replacement, Measure Existing Cable as follows:
Measure plastic cable jacket (“Y” dimension, shown in above drawing) in
inches, add 18”, and round up to the next foot. Order that length cable.
For Rack Steering Cable Replacement, Measure Existing Cable as follows:
Measure plastic cable jacket (“Y” dimension shown in above drawing) in
inches, add 30”, and round up to the next foot. Order that length cable.
For JBS Jet Boat Cable Replacement, Measure Existing Cable as follows:
Measure cable from tip to tip. (Round up to next foot if needed for whole foot.)
Order that length cable.
New Installation:
Measure cable routing path from wheel center line to
engine connection, as follows:

In order to determine that, you need to know what brand(s) of engine and control head are on the boat. Mercury/Mariner/
Force and OMC/Johnson/Evinrude engines usually require an “OEM type” cable when using those engine makers’ control
Generally, all other engines and controls use a “universal” 3300/33C type control cable. Universal cables have 10-32
threaded ends and often require extra hardware to connect to the engine and control. Contact the engine manufacturer
if you need details on the hookup. Diesels and twin station vessels may use larger diameter (4300/43 or 6400/64 type)
to the “Control Cables” section of this catalog for more information.
We suggest the following periodic maintenance be performed at least twice a season:
a. Check overall operation for proper gear engagement, full and idle throttle, and overall feel.

dimensions, later in this catalog, for more information. Number of steering wheel turns for a given system is based on total cylinder displacement divided by helm displacement.
For systems 1, 2, & 3, nylon tubing (3/8” diameter) is the standard requirement for plumbing the system. Copper tubing (3/8” diameter) can be substituted by Fitting Kit
HF5507 is required. For systems 4 & 5, copper tubing (3/8” diameter) is the standard requirement for plumbing the system. Fitting Kit HF5508 is required. For systems
1, 2, 3, 4, & 5, SeaStar outboard hose can be substituted for nylon or copper tube. These hoses must be ordered in standard lengths. They cannot be cut to length.

manufactured for 35 horsepower motors
and smaller (down to 2 H.P.). This unit
is 11-1/2" wide and weighs only 24 lbs.
The PT-35 utilizes the same hydraulic
actuator as the PT-130 and gives you all
to bolt-on motors and clamp-on motors
(within the 11" frame) without the need of an adapter. The PT-35
incorporates a 5-1/2" setback, which enhances boat stability. It
has a total of 84° of trim and tilt. When you’re underway, you can
change the angle of your motor to obtain the best performance for
your load and water conditions.
