Congress created the US Court of Appeals to ease
the appeals workload of the Supreme Court.
• US is divided into 12 judicial circuits with 1
appellate court in each circuit (11 Federal
District Court districts + 1 special appeals
court with national jurisdiction)
• Approximately 60,000 appeals heard / year
• Panel of 3 judges sits on each appeal
• Decisions include:
• Uphold the original decision
• Reverse the original decision
• Send the case back to lower court to be
tried again
• Unless appealed to the Supreme Court,
decisions of Court of Appeals are final
