Julian Milford Makes Noticeable Contributions to Classical Music
1. Julian Milford Makes Noticeable Contributions to Classical Music
Regardless of whether British pianist Julian Milford is playing with the London Conchord
Ensemble, accompanying other vocalists and instrumentalists, or offering up solo
productions, his contributions have been noticed by both listeners and critics.
Julian Milford accompanied tenor Toby Spence and mezzo soprano Helen Sherman during a
performance at a recent Cheltenham Festival
which drew critical acclaim. David Nice, critic
for the Arts Desk, said of their performances of
Schumann’s Dichterliebe and Janácek’s Diary of
One Who Disappeared, “It was really thanks to
Julian Milford’s razor sharp rapport with Spence
that both song-sequences struck as perfect slices
of music theatre.”
A recent performance of the London Conchord
Ensemble, a group of instrumentalists which Milford co-founded in 2002, at the Library of
Congress in Washington D.C. also produced a positive critique. Washington Post’s classical
music critic, Joe Banno, said of the rendition of Mozart’s Quintet for Piano and Winds,
“Thanks to pianist Julian Milford’s sprightly manner and crisply accented approach, Mozart’s
score emerged with a well-projected shape, never merely wallowing in all that luscious
sound.” Banno went on to say, “Milford’s keyboard work possessed all the elegance and
vibrancy the piece demands.”
The London Conchord Ensemble’s release of “St Petersburg”: Russian Chamber Music with
Julian Milford at the piano was also highlighted. The CD was dubbed “highly entertaining”
by The Observer and was recognized as “CD of the Week” by The Daily Telegraph. The
group’s renditions contained in the CD “Paris”: Violin and Piano Music featuring the talents
of violinist Maya Koch was referred to by Strad Magazine as “sumptuously engineered and
glowingly played... this recording simply oozes class.”
The debut solo album released by Julian Milford was met favourably by the classical music
industry. The CD entitled Repertoire: William Alwyn Solo Piano Music was proclaimed as
“impeccably stylish” by the BBC Music Magazine. The Chandos label release contains five
titles, three of which are Sonata Alla Toccata, Night Thoughts and Green Hills. Milford was
praised for his ability to reflect both the humour and the moods of the various works.
