Amelia Earhart was a pioneering American aviator who was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. She was born in Kansas in 1897 and took her first flying lesson in 1921, quickly becoming fascinated with aviation. Some of her many accomplishments included being the first woman to fly across the Atlantic in 1928, marrying George Putnam in 1931, and making a number of record-setting flights in the 1930s. However, in 1937 Earhart disappeared over the central Pacific Ocean during an attempt to circumnavigate the globe, becoming one of aviation's most famous disappearances.
