Strategy Overview
O Decision making is critical to individual
  success.
O It is used in our everyday life.
O Whether it be what type of cereal to buy or
     what job to take.
O It offers students the opportunity to make
a personal connection with what they are
  learning.
Why the Strategy Works
O Students…….
-examine a problem, make a decision, justify their
   reasoning
-gain confidence in their decision making abilities
 - have higher levels of conceptual
   understanding.

O Those encouraged to use good
  decision making skills carry those
  skills outside the classroom.
How to Use the Strategy
1. Grab students’ attention
*For example, have students reflect on their
        own decision making experiences.

2. Provide students with the necessary
     background information.

3. Generate/present students with
     alternatives (options)
How to Use the Strategy
4. Have students compare the alternatives,
take notes, and make a decision.

5. Allow students time to communicate
     their decisions.

6. Provide students time to reflect.
What do you think????
O During recess, Ms. Carter’s class was signing up
for “Sharpen the Saw.” Pip, the student with a
behavioral IEP, did not hear her call for the class to
sign up. When he got to the table to sign up for
the specific activity he wanted, he quickly realized
all the spots had been filled. He threw a fit and
Ms. Carter permitted him a spot on the list.

Do you agree or disagree with the actions
  of Ms. Carter?
