UCLA’s Higher Education Research Institute (HERI) is conducting a multi‐year initiative funded by the
John Templeton Foundation “to examine the spiritual development of undergraduate students during
the college years.”  The College Students’ Beliefs and Values (CSBV) Survey was administered to first‐
time freshmen during fall 2004 as a two‐page addendum to the Cooperative Institutional Research
Program (CIRP) Freshman Survey.  In 2007, a follow‐up survey was administered to students completing
the 2004 survey.  Bridgewater participated in both of these surveys.   This report summarizes the results
of the 2007 survey with comparisons to the 2004 survey.

Overview
UCLA’s Higher Education Research Institute (HERI) is conducting a multi‐year initiative funded by the
John Templeton Foundation “to examine the spiritual development of undergraduate students during
the college years.”  The College Students’ Beliefs and Values (CSBV) Survey was administered to first‐
time freshmen during fall 2004 as a two‐page addendum to the Cooperative Institutional Research
Program (CIRP) Freshman Survey.  In 2007, a follow‐up survey was administered to students completing
the 2004 survey.  Bridgewater participated in both of these surveys.  HERI provided an Institutional
Profile (Appendix A) summarizing students’ answers to survey questions, broken out by gender and
across gender, and comparing our results with Other Religious (2,205 respondents) and All
Baccalaureate (14,527 respondents) institutions.  Also provided were longitudinal reports summarizing
the responses to questions that were on both the 2004 and 2007 surveys (Appendix B).  Note: The 2007
percentages in the longitudinal report may not always match those in the 2007 institutional profile since
the longitudinal report uses only those students who answered a given question in both the 2004 and
2007 surveys.
For the 2007 survey, responses were received from 108 enrolled Bridgewater students that had
completed the 2004 survey.  Responses included 30 men (28%) and 78 women (72%).  This breakdown
matched the breakdown for Other Religious institutions.  All Baccalaureate institutions had a somewhat
higher percentage of male respondents (32%).
Highlights
Education
When asked to indicate the highest degree planned at any institution (See Table 1), Bridgewater men
were somewhat more likely to plan a bachelor's degree (36.7%) than a master's degree (33.3%) or a
doctorate/professional degree (26.6%).   Bridgewater women were most likely to plan a master's degree
(60.3%).  Bridgewater women were much less likely to plan a doctorate or professional degree (14.1%)
than Bridgewater men (26.6%) or women at Other Religious (27.3%) or All Baccalaureate (27.8%)
institutions.

Dimensions of Spirituality and Religiousness
The HERI Research Team developed a number of factor scales that measure various aspects of students’
spirituality and religiousness by combining questionnaire items with similar content.  The final 12
measures included “three measures of spirituality (Spirituality, Spiritual Quest, and Equanimity), five

measures of religiousness (Religious Commitment, Religious Engagement, Religious/Social Conservatism,
Religious Skepticism, and Religious Struggle), and four other dimensions that were expected to be
related to spirituality and religiousness (Charitable Involvement, Compassionate Self‐Concept, Ethic of
Caring, and Ecumenical Worldview).”  A description of these dimensions is at Appendix C.
Table 2 and Figure 1 show the
percentage of Bridgewater juniors
(2007 survey) scoring “high” on
these factor scales.  Table 2 also
compares the responses from
freshmen (2004 survey).
• The majority of
Bridgewater juniors
(60.4%) scored high on
the “Equanimity” scale
(See Table 2).  This scale
had the largest increase
from the 2004 results,
increasing 17.8 percentage points from 42.6%.
• Besides “Equanimity,” Bridgewater students showed the largest gains in the “Spiritual Quest”
(+16.7), “Ethic of Caring” (+15.1), “Spirituality” (+14.5) and “Ecumenical World View” (+13.2)
scales.
• In 2004, Bridgewater freshmen lagged behind the comparison groups on the “Ecumenical World
View” scale (Bridgewater 6.6%; Other Religious 13.6%; All Baccalaureate 12.9%).  By their junior
year, Bridgewater students more closely resembled their peers (Bridgewater 19.8%, Other
Religious 20.4%, All Baccalaureate 17.8%).
• There was no appreciable change in the “Religious Commitment” of Bridgewater students
during their college years.  In 2004, 42.2% of Bridgewater students scored high on this scale
compared to 43.1% in 2007.

• Bridgewater students showed a decline in those scoring high on the “Religious/Social
Conservatism” scale, declining 5.9 percentage points from 36.6% in 2004 to 30.7% in 2007.
Students at Other Religious (‐2.3) and All Baccalaureate (‐2.2) institutions showed lesser declines
on this scale (See Table 3).  Bridgewater students remained more conservative than their
counterparts at other institutions, however, with 30.7% scoring high on this scale in their junior
year compared to 24.2% for Other Religious and 13.9% for All Baccalaureate institutions.

• In spite of the large increase in Bridgewater students scoring high on the “Ethic of Caring” scale
(+15.1), Bridgewater’s score for 2007 (24.5%) was below that of the comparison groups (Other
Religious 30.4%, All Baccalaureate 26.7%).  At Bridgewater, men (33.3%) were more likely than
women (22.1%) to score high on this scale.
• Bridgewater juniors were mostly secure in their religious beliefs, with just 11.0% ranking high on
the “Religious Struggle” scale and 6.7% ranking high on the “Religious Skepticism” scale (See
Figure 1).  The majority described their “current views about spiritual/religious matters” as
“secure” (61.1%) and just 4.6% indicated that they were “not interested.”

Religious/Spiritual Beliefs
• Bridgewater students’ faith remained strong during their college years.  Most continued to
express a belief in God (freshmen 91.1%; juniors 88.1%) and as discussed above, “Religious
Struggle” (11.0%) and “Religious Skepticism” (6.7%) were low.
• Almost half (47.2%) of Bridgewater students indicated that their beliefs were “strengthened” by
their interactions with their peers (See Table 4).  Bridgewater students were more likely than
their counterparts at Other Religious and All Baccalaureate institutions to cite their interactions
with faculty as having “strengthened” their beliefs (Bridgewater 35.8%; Other Religious 28.7%;
All Baccalaureate 13.5%).

Science/Religion
• The majority of Bridgewater students believed that “while science can provide important
information about the physical world, only religion can truly explain existence.”   As freshmen,
76.2% of Bridgewater students “strongly” or “somewhat” agreed with this statement.  By their
junior year, the percentage agreeing with this statement declined by 14.3 percentage points to
61.9%.  Bridgewater juniors were more likely to agree with this statement than their
counterparts at Other Religious (56.1%) and All Baccalaureate (47.8%) institutions.

• In 2004, one‐third (33.3%) of
Bridgewater freshmen
indicated that they considered
science and religion to be in
conflict and themselves on the
side of religion, and just 5.7%
considered themselves on the
side of science (See Table 5).
In 2007, the percentage of
those siding with religion decreased to 11.4% and those siding with science rose to 10.5%. The
percentage of Bridgewater students believing that “the relationship between science and
religion is one of collaboration—each can be used to help support the other” increased from
38.1% in 2004 to 50.5% in 2007.
Political Perspective
• The percentage of Bridgewater students citing “keeping up to date with political affairs” as an
“essential” or “very important” personal objective increased from just 18.7% in 2004 to 41.1% in
2007, an increase of 22.4 percentage points.
• Half (50.5%) of Bridgewater juniors described themselves as “middle‐of‐the‐road” politically
(See Table 6).  The remaining half were slightly more liberal (far left 1.0%, liberal 24.8%) than
conservative (23.8%).  Students became less
conservative during their tenure at
Bridgewater.  The percentage characterizing
their political views as “conservative” or “far
right” declined from 30.5% for freshmen to
23.8% for juniors.
• Bridgewater juniors were more likely to
characterize themselves as “middle‐of‐the‐
road” than students at Other Religious and All Baccalaureate institutions (Bridgewater 50.5%;
Other Religious 40.1%; All Baccalaureate 40.6%).
Global Perspective
Bridgewater students’ global perspective increased significantly during their tenure at Bridgewater.
• In 2004, just 27.8% of Bridgewater students
considered “improving my understanding of
other countries and cultures” to be an
“essential” or “very important” personal
objective compared to 44.3% of students at
Other Religious and 42.0% of students at All
Baccalaureate institutions (See Table 7).  By
2007, 56.5% of Bridgewater students indicated this objective was important to them, an
increase of 28.7 percentage points.  The percentage of Bridgewater juniors reporting this
objective was important to them was higher than for All Baccalaureate institutions (55.4%) but
lower than for Other Religious institutions (62.8%).
• Bridgewater students were more likely to report that their skill in “understanding of global
issues” was “much stronger than when they first started college” than their counterparts at

Other Religious and All Baccalaureate institutions (Bridgewater 34.9%; Other Religious 30.8%, All
Baccalaureate 27.9%).  However, Bridgewater students were less likely than students from the
comparison groups to have participated in a study abroad program (Bridgewater 13.9%; Other
Religious 24.7%; All Baccalaureate 16.5%).
Improvement in Skills/Abilities
• Over one‐third of Bridgewater juniors reported that their skills/abilities in “critical thinking”
(43%) and “understanding of global issues” (34.9%) were “much stronger” compared to when
they first started college (See Table 8).  Bridgewater juniors were more likely than their
counterparts at Other Religious (30.8%) and All Baccalaureate (27.9%) institutions to report
much stronger “understanding of global issues.”
• Bridgewater juniors were less likely to report “much stronger” “ability to get along with people
of different races/cultures.”  Just 13.9% of Bridgewater juniors indicated their abilities were
“much stronger” in this area compared to 23.2% (‐9.3) at Other Religious and 19.9% (‐6.0) at All
Baccalaureate institutions.  However, Bridgewater students were more likely than students at
the comparison institutions to report that since entering college, they “frequently socialized
with someone of another racial/ethnic group” (Bridgewater 61.1%; Other Religious 57.2%; All
Baccalaureate 54.2%).

• At Bridgewater, men were more likely than women to state that their ability/skill in
“understanding of global issues” (men 43.3%; women 31.6%) and “acceptance of people with
different religious/spiritual beliefs”  (men 26.7%; women 15.4%) were “much stronger” than
when they first started college.
Satisfaction with Campus Life
Bridgewater juniors were mostly satisfied with campus life.  Bridgewater’s scores compared well with
the comparison groups.  As shown in the Table 9, in each case, Bridgewater’s scores were higher than
the scores for Other Religious and All Baccalaureate institutions.

• All Bridgewater juniors were satisfied (“very” or “somewhat”) with the “amount of contact with
faculty” compared to 93.9% for Other Religious and 80.3% for All Baccalaureate institutions.
• Compared to students at Other Religious institutions, Bridgewater juniors were more likely to be
satisfied with “opportunities for religious/spiritual reflection” (Bridgewater 91.6%, Other
Religious 85.1%).
• Although “career counseling and advising” received the lowest campus life score from
Bridgewater juniors (86.0% satisfied), this score was similar to Other Religious institutions
(85.9%) and 9.8 percentage points above the score for All Baccalaureate institutions (76.2%).
Conclusion
• Course content (36.8%), interactions with faculty (35.8%), and interactions with other students
(47.2%) “strengthened” students’ religious and spiritual beliefs.
• Our students significantly increased and expanded their interest in and knowledge of the world
around them. Those scoring “high” on the “Ecumenical World View scale increased from 6.6%
to 19.8%; those citing “Improving my understanding of other countries and cultures” to be an
“essential” or “very important” objective increased from 27.8% to 56.5%; and 34.9% indicated
that their “understanding of global issues” was “much stronger” than when they started college.
However, participation in study abroad lags behind their peers (Bridgewater 13.9%; Other
Religious 24.7%; All baccalaureate 16.5%).
