Myth of Clutch Hitting in Baseball Tim O ’Shea, Jeb Kochakkan, Ryan Manion, Jim King Abstract : Once of the most widely held beliefs in sports is that certain athletes possess the distinct ability to consistently “raise their game” or “rise to the occassion” in high pressure situations. Numerous studies have been conducted on this topic and have all conducted that contrary to popular sport opinion, there is no evidence to suggest that professional athletes can perform better in higher pressure situations with any consistency. Despite this myth lacking any validity, there are several reasons for why this myth is prevalent in every day sport talk including selective perception and influence by the media. That's money time. You focus much better. Some people don't do great in those situations. It doesn't mean he's not a good player. Me? I love it. Always." Sosa, it should be noted, was worse in career LIPS (.264) than overall (.278) (Verducci, 2004, 3). ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],David Ortiz (pictured left) has been given the distinction by Red Sox owner John Henry as "The Greatest Clutch Hitter in the History of the Boston Red Sox" for his timely hits and memorable postseason homeruns.
