- [Opening]How many here went to public high school? Private? Home-school? Other?As we can see, most of us went to a public high school. Why is that?Aren’t there other choices? Of course there is. Your parents probably sent you to public school because it was the easy choice. It was the route that required the least amount of work.We’re all different in personalities and characteristics so therefore we also learn differently. Was the public school the best choice for us?Your parents probably did not know about the other choices or they were not properly informed about them.My purpose is to inform you guys about the other choices in American Secondary education so that you can better make a decision about where to send your children.[Introduction]There are many choices in Secondary education in America. We’ve researched 3 different types of schooling available to students.I’ll be going over public schools, private schools, and home schools. I’ll be discussing the social and academic pros and cons.
- Most of us attended a public school. It’s not a particularly bad choice to make since about 90% of American attend a public school, we are but only part of the masses.Before we jump right into the pros and cons of each school, I want to give you a brief background on how the public school system came about.Although it’s called “public school,” it wasn’t available to everyone until the 1840’s. [Social classes]Before then, school was available to those could afford it. Reformers did not think that was fair so after much controversy, school was finally open to all children.The first official public school was the Boston Latin School (refer to picture).
- Why did most of us attend public school? Probably because it was free. Well, free to some degree.Public schools are paid for by taxes: federal, state, and local.This comes from state income tax, sales tax, and property tax.As you can already tell, the school budget is based on unstable numbers. Depending of the current economy, the school budget may go through a roller coaster ride for money.This leads opens us to our next point. With money problems comes unstable employees. With low funding, some teachers may not be able to keep their jobs.Teachers are trained to teach the younger generation to think critically. Most teachers are certified in their area of teaching. Meaning the teacher that teaches math probably majored it a math related major. Teachers are qualified to teach students the correct material. With a higher demand for certified teachers, naturally the pay rate would increase. There was a study made that showed that the average salary of a public school teacher is much higher than that of a private school teacher. This shows that a public school teacher has more qualifications therefore gets paid more.[Lack of materials]Teacher not motivated to teach because there is a limited amount of resource therefore teach using the least materials and lessons may not be very exciting.
- Pro:Public school provides opportunities for students to interact with many other people of different ethnicities and cultural backgrounds. This will lead them to become more in tune to the outside world and how vast and full of knowledge it is.The world isn’t a bubble. Exposure can ready them for the outside world.Cons:Because of such a diverse environment, there may be may clashes in opinions. This may cause fights in school. [Violence Stats]
- [Background]Private school started out religious.Riot concerning King James version of Bible and Catholics broken away forming their own school.
- [Private school funding]Private school has more funding so more materials and resources to work with. This give them an advantage to learn.Private school students has a higher percentage of getting accepted into college. [Give stats]
- School used to be taught at home.Home is learning at home. Parents want to teach kids. Parents want to be able to control what children learn at what time in life.G.E.D. is testing out of high school. Not the same as a diploma but still works. Some universities do no accept GEDs. but becoming more accepted.
- Less interaction with peers.Would suggests a sheltered environment but not really. Can help build a stronger relationship with adults as oppose to just peers own age. This could be better since employers are generally older.Must drop out of high school to take G.E.D. Bad connotation. G.E.D. not the same as diploma.
- Usually from high income family so family member has degree. Own pace. Own curriculum. Parents know child best. Able to teach in a way that they know best.Con:Get too used to a motherly teacher. can be rough once in college, a “regular” school.
- Education is improving.No set results of which school is better in terms of test results.Too many different factors in the resulting test scores.Have to judge based on all pros and cons and which pros you value most.
