Anubis was an eight-year-old lad in Egypt. His father, Anpu, was a
mason working on a pyramid. One day, Anpu brought Anubis to work. The
carving of the inside had begun only 2 months ago, so they were inside
with a few torches for light, carving the walls cubit by cubit. They had
just sharpened their copper chisels, with so much help from Anubis
carrying debris, they made fast progress. Anubis started asking Anpu
about the inside layout of the tunnels.
His father was too busy carving tombs to pay attention to Anubis.
“Never mind.” said Anubis as he headed into the narrow tunnels all alone. He
walked in cautiously making sure not to damage anything in the process. The
tunnels were dark and Anubis had a small torch, but it didn’t give much light.
He took a right then a left , then another right. He was curious and kept
wanting to see more, but at this point he felt like he might be lost. He could
see something in the distance. It was a large room filled with tombs, and he
wanted to see more. Despite his fear of being lost he kept going.
He finally saw everything and
wanted to go back. He turned around and
started walking but he didn’t know which
way to go. He tried yelling for help, but
nobody answered. Anubis had no clue on
how to get out. He went all different ways
but never saw light. Anpu noticed
something was wrong and looked around.
“Anubis!” he yelled. He thought Anubis
might have gone home for a drink, like he
had before. He continued working, but as
he was he heard a loud bang and a shrill
scream.
A wall of skulls had fallen on Anubis! Dazed,
he looked up to see what had fallen on him. He saw
an ugly, terrifying skull on the floor in front of him.
He let out another scream, but not as loud as the
first one. He hoped someone had heard him.
“Father!” he yelled as he tried to find his way out of
the room with the creepy skulls. “Anubis!” Anpu
yelled, but there was no answer. Anpu dropped his
chisel and darted to the entrance of the pyramid.
“Maybe Anubis wandered into here.” Anpu thought.
He looked down the tunnels, but there was nothing.
He screamed “Anubis, Anubis!!!” and he heard a
muffled noise. He ran towards it… and as he ran,
the walls began to shake because of his heavy
footsteps. Suddenly, a wall in the tunnel he was
going down collapsed, and he was trapped!
Now that Anpu was trapped too, he was also
calling for help. One of the other workers heard
him because he wasn’t that far away. Someone
came and helped him get out. Anpu told him about
Anubis and they both went looking cautiously for
him. Meanwhile, they heard a loud splash. “That’s
odd,” Anpu said. “There is no water in this
pyramid!” They kept walking to where the noise
was and they found a gaping hole. The weight of
the wall collapsing caused Anubis and the skulls to
fall into a secret room with the Nile River running
through it. They called for Anubis and heard
gurgling noises. They discovered a room with
water and saw Anubis drowning. They both
jumped into the river, The current was carrying
Anubis at a very fast pace, and they would never
catch up, but there was no turning back now.
They saw his head go under in the rapid water, but
his hand reached out of it. He was too badly
injured, though, to fight the rapids, He had to let it
carry him away. He went under and Anpu and the
worker lost sight of him. Anubis had drowned!
Anpu broke down and cried. Eventually, the men
made it to shore where they saw a body washed
up on shore. “Anubis!” he yelled as Anpu held his
hand one final time. It was cold and bloody. Then
his finger moved.
