How To Reverse Diabetes Naturally โ With Magnesium
This marks the first post among many about how to be diabetes smart.
Yes the three pillars for living a smart life are: Food Smart, Body
Smart and Brain Smart.
But, diabetes is an epidemic in our country. One in four
Americans either have diabetes or are pre-diabetic.
My Grandma is diabetic, and my Dad was also recently
diagnosed with diabetes.
So diabetes has a special place in my heart because it is such an
epidemic and it is by and large a disease of not living by the 3
smart living pillars.
This article marks the first in a series of โHow To Reverse
Diabetes Naturallyโ articles.
No one thing is going to reverse diabetes in and of itself, but taken together, can lead to the reversal of this pernicious
disease.
Diabetes
Before we get into the role that Magnesium plays in helping with diabetes, let us first take a look at the seriousness of
diabetes.
As stated above, nearly one in four Americans suffer from diabetes, pre-diabetes, or are undiagnosed.
What causes diabetes?
There are two types of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes tends to be a genetic condition where the sufferers pancreas just
isnโt able to produce enough insulin to supply the bodies needs.
Type 2 diabetes, which 95% of diabetes sufferers are, is a perfect storm of not living a Food Smart, Brain Smart and
Body Smart life.
We donโt exercise, and we sit for to long.
We eat refined sugars and food additives that are killing us, and we donโt eat enough of the good wholesome foods
that provide the nutrients our bodies need.
We beat ourselves up mentally for falling short so often and ultimately believe that we are just that lazy undisciplined
of person who canโt keep their health under control. And as a result there is a decrease in the release of good
hormones into the body, and their receptors are down regulated in the body.
And so diabetes has come: to one in four of us.
Diabetes is serious business though. Straight from the CDC website here are some of the consequences of living a
2. life with diabetes.
282,000 hypoglycemic emergency room crises in 2011
175,000 hyperglycemic emergency room crises in 2011 resulting in 2,300 deaths
High blood pressure of greater than 140/90 found in 70% of diabetes patients
High levels of LDL cholesterol in 65% of patients
Almost double the risk of cardiovascular disease compared to non-diabetics
Almost double the risk of hospitalization due to a heart attack compared to non-diabetics
1.5 times higher risk of hospitalization due to stroke than non-diabetics
28% of diabetics older than 40 suffer blindness due to their diabetes
44% of kidney failure cases were diabetics (the number one cause)
In 2011 228,000 diabetics were on dialysis to support the kidneys.
In 2010 73,000 amputations were performed on diabetics
Other conditions associated with diabetes is nerve damage, non-alcoholic fatty liver, gum disease, hearing
loss, erectile dysfunction, depression, and complications during pregnancy.
Diabetes is the 7th leading killer in America causing 234,000 deaths in 2011. Most experts believe that
diabetes is a much more fatal disease due to all the other conditions it causes that may lead to death.
The total direct and indirect cost of diabetes in the United States is estimated to be $245,000,000,000. Or
245 billion dollars per yer.
Have I Got Your Attention Yet?
Good because now that we have acknowledged the devastating impact of diabetes we are going to turn the rest of
our attention on how to reverse diabetes naturally.
Again, just to reiterate, reversing diabetes naturally requires effort on multiple fronts. We will get into those fronts in
the upcoming weeks, but for today we are going to focus on the role of magnesium and diabetes.
As it turns out magnesium is the fourth most abundant mineral in your body.
Or it should be anyway.
If you are anything like 80% of Americans you are likely deficient in magnesium.
An ADA study found that high levels of magnesium offered protective measures in preventing pre-diabetes from
progressing into full blown diabetes.
A Japanese study found that magnesium levels was a protective factor against diabetes especially in the insulin
resistant population.
And in a Framingham study they found that optimal levels of magnesium increased insulin sensitivity and decreased
the risks of diabetes.
Why Is Magnesium So Important?
3. Magnesium has been found to be associated with an enzyme that
is responsible for turning on or off the insulin receptors.
In short if you have optimal levels of magnesium you will have
greater insulin sensitivity and lower your risk of diabetes.
Conversely if you donโt have optimal levels of magnesium your
pancreas will have to pump out more insulin to communicate with
the insulin receptors which leads to the increased risk of diabetes.
To make matters even worse for those with diabetes, it has been
noted that diabetics have an increase in urinary magnesium
excretion! Leading to a downward spiral of magnesium loss.
Aside from the protective benefits against diabetes, magnesium
also helps with the following:
muscle spasms and arrythmiaโs
seizures
numbness and tingling
changes in personality
The Bottom Line
The bottom line is that diabetes is a vicious disease. It is a silent disease because even though you may know that
you have it, itโs full affects are not felt for many years. But every single day that passes by, your body is progressively
becoming less healthy and less stable.
80% of Americans are deficient in their magnesium levels. The best place to get magnesium from is your food!
Especially dark leafy green vegetables.
If you need to supplement, find a supplement that contains magnesium threonate as this type of magnesium has
been shown to actually penetrate into the cells (including brain cells) instead of getting washed out when you go to the
bathroom.
