BaSE Bangladesh is a non-profit organization that coordinates over 10,000 female artisans across 17 producer groups in Bangladesh. BaSE Bangladesh Fair Trade Handicrafts
1. BaSE Bangladesh is a non-profit Guaranteed Fair Trade organization
of Bangladesh. Setup, co-ordinate and promote the handicraft
products of various female manufacturing groups out of the
mainstream, especially those working in the South-West region of
Bangladesh. Since 1999 BaSE is a member of WFTO (World Fair Trade
Organization).
At BaSE Bangladesh, these groups produce various types of
handmade items, such as Date Palmleaf Basketry, Jute Macramé,
Nakshi Embroidery, Women’s Clothing, and Accessories.
BaSE Bangladesh is owned by women producer groups and a total of
over 10,000 producers (99% are women) is organized in 17 producer
groups and has over 3,000 products.
Our producer is very skilled and able to show you the large numbers
of its own design items and able to do customizable designs.
BaSE Bangladesh uses local natural raw materials and products that
are 100% Natural, Biodegradable, Recyclable. We purchase all the
raw materials from the direct farmers or producers and avoid
medium/brokers.
History of BaSE Bangladesh
BaSE Bangladesh was founded by an Italian Xaverian missionary,
Father Giovanni Abbiati, known as Father John.
He observed the poverty and the life of the poor villagers, especially
underprivileged women. He wanted to change the situation but
without providing direct financial support in order to avoid economic
dependency.
Knowing that village women use jute to craft their household
decorative items, he decided to give them the opportunity to uphold
their traditional skills and prepare these products for the market.
2. With this purpose he started a specific group in Bhoberpara village
and began to export these goods, devoting his life to the
development of the livelihood of the poor disadvantaged handicraft
producers.
BaSE Bangladesh concept was born in 1977 and was officially formed
in 1999 to coordinate the handicraft activities of various producer
groups working in the South-West part of Bangladesh.
United in BaSE, these groups which were out of the mainstream, got
the chance to promote their products.
The baSE stands for Bangladesh Shilpo Ekota, which means United
Artisans of Bangladesh. On 2009, 5 October in a road accident in
Savar, Dhaka Fair Trade Hero Fr. John demise.
After Father John sudden demise Mr Shourove Ansari took the
initiative to carry on the activities with the cooperation of Artisans,
Sondrio Friends, Xaverian Society Bangladesh.

Bags and Pouches items
The BaSE brings you a range of handmade Bags and Pouches.
The production takes place in three main organizations, two in
Jessore –Banchte Shekha Handicrafts (BSH) and Charka Handicrafts
(CH)- and one in Khulna –Khalishpur (KHC), based on the work of
around a thousand dedicated women.
Our Bags and Pouches are accurately made mainly with hand-loomed
cotton, sometimes mixed with other materials such as silk and jute.
4. Basketry and Boxes items
Our products are conceived to meet different styles and usages of
home decoration, through a range of sizes, shapes, and materials.
Basketry and Boxes are all hand-made with local materials such as
Palm/Date Leaf and Jute. The latter specifically symbolizes an ancient
Bengali tradition, as well as an important source of profit for the
country, being the second-biggest producer in the world of this type
of plant and its derivatives.
Jute is a long vegetable fiber that can be spun into strong threads,
which are then matched together to create these beautiful objects.
Dress and Fashion items
BaSE offers you a large range of Dress and Fashion items. Our
producers, through tailoring and embroidery techniques, create
beautiful pieces’ hand-worked with cotton, silk, a mixture of them,
and also jute.
The result is colorful clothes, scarves, and slippers to enlighten
yourselves with a Bangladesh fashion sensation!
5. Wedding and Greetings items
For Wedding and Greetings gifts and special occasions, these
products are lovely made in various communities in Khulna, Jessore,
and Satkhira.
With a mixture of different materials, we offer a selection of
greetings cards embroidered on paper with meaningful images, gift
pouches of jute fabric, jute strings, and various designs and fabrics-
cotton, silk, cotton/silk.
