Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) Update
Purpose:
To provide updated information and guidance to UTSW/BioTel EMS Providers regarding the
evaluation, care and transport of patients at risk for Ebola Virus Disease (EVD).
Background:
A second case of EVD in Dallas has been confirmed. A nurse who cared for “Patient Zero” at
Texas Health Presbyterian Dallas during his hospitalization has tested positive for EVD and is
now hospitalized.
What has NOT changed for UTSW/BioTel EMS System EMS Providers?
EMS Providers shall remain vigilant in screening all patients for infectious diseases, including
EVD, and shall strictly adhere to the recently-issued UTSW/BioTel EMS Personal Protective
Equipment (PPE), Disinfection & Decontamination, and Destination Decision-Making Training
Bulletins.
ESPECIALLY CRITICAL: Attention to detail when removing PPE – “Buddy System” advised.
What HAS changed for UTSW/BioTel EMS System EMS Providers?
Nothing! Remain calm.
EMS Providers shall strictly adhere to all current and forthcoming Training Bulletins and
Advisories on this topic.
! EMS Providers are encouraged to contact BioTel or their EMS Supervisor immediately,
with any questions or concerns
