Home Office Productivity Ideas

Many office workers envy friends and colleagues who get to work at home. After all, waking up
in the morning and not having to change out of your pajamas to go to work sounds great, right?
But, as many home-based workers and telecommuters know, it’s not all fun working on the
couch the whole days. Procrastination and distraction are two of the telecommuter’s biggest
enemies. It’s easy to flip the TV on “for a second” when the boss or client isn’t peering over
your shoulder. So, it’s you work from home, you may want to check out these home office ideas
for productivity.

Remove Yourself From Distractions. Offices are made and designed to maximize productivity.
That’s why there are no TVs, video games, or even leisure magazines and books in most offices.
If you keep getting distracted at home, then you have to remove yourself from those
distractions (since, presumably, you can’t exactly just get rid of your TV). Have a room, space,
corner or a table where you can work distraction-free. All you really need is a clean space
where you can’t reach for the TV remote or the video game controller. You should also build
your own workstation. If you check out sites like OfficeFurnitureSpot.Com, you’ll find that a
good desk and chair need not be expensive.

Keep Office Hours. One of the best home office ideas productivity experts recommend is to
keep normal office hours. You shouldn’t work less just because you work from home, and this
also means you shouldn’t work more (all the time). For people who work from home because
they are trying to cut back on commuting expenses, this is a good habit to keep. Wake up at 8,
have breakfast and coffee and then sit yourself down for 8 hours of work with the appropriate
breaks. Of course, if you work from home because you like the flexibility, then keep your hours
accordingly.

Take a Break. One luxury home-based workers have is to really get away from it all while going
on a break. You can have your lunch on your porch, or maybe go walk your dog during lunch.
You can also check in on your kids or partner. Many office workers can’t afford to do these
things because their office is too remote or too far away.

Do What Is Necessary To Stay Focused. Most home office ideas for productivity aren’t “one-
size-fits-all.” Some tips work for some, others, not. The key is finding a rhythm that works for
you. For example, while it may seem silly, others find it helpful to “dress” for work and put on a
suit and tie. Others need a break and sometimes work at a café or a friend’s house. It really
depends on your personality, your type of work, and your home environment, plus a myriad of
other things.
