1. Kishan joins school
Kishan lives in village Barrukhedi, Bhopal, Madhya
Pradesh. He was a quiet reclusive boy and the youngest
in the family with four elder sisters. His father is a driver
while his mother takes care of the home. He never
mingles with anyone, afraid of strangers and start crying
if anybody tries to interact with him. Villagers felt that he
was mentally ill. It was during preparation of the village
plan that the community organizer Suresh came to know
about Kishan. When he wanted to interact with him,
Krishna started crying. This promoted him to discuss
with Kishan’s parents and gradually analysed that Kishan is affected with cerebral palsy and
therefore there is lack of coordination in his limbs. Suresh went ahead to counsel Kishan’s
parents, resulting in the entire family joining in to support Kishan, who was now motivated to do
activities independently. Gradually, the efforts started showing positive results and Kishan was
able to do his daily routine (eating, bathing etc) and also started mingling with children of his age
to play with much confidence.
After few months his sisters admitted him back in the pre-school. Though he was enrolled long
back he did not like to go because other children used to tease him and there was little support
from the pre-school worker. Today, he is a confident student of class one. Suresh, the community
worker also supported Kishan’s family to reach out to basic entitlements for Kishan. Today
Kishan has the disability certificate and scholarship. The teacher was also sensitised about
Kishan, which led to added support. Kishan now attends the children meeting too, which is held
every Saturday in the school itself. His parents too are very happy with the progress of their child
and dreaming that one day he will become independent, attain good education and would be able
to support the family like anybody else.
