2. Saint Francis of Assisi in Ecstasy
by Anton Van Dyck. The artist
uses cool colors and different
shades to set the somber tone of
the artwork. The focal point in
this piece is the saint, he seems to
be discouraged yet still holding
on to his faith as the cross in his
arm might symbolize. The skull
in his other arm symbolizes this
discouragement. In the
background the artist uses warm
colors for the angel which can
symbolize hope and comfort for
the Saint.
3. The Trinity by El Greco, shows the
ascent of Christ into heaven. Christ is
the main focal point of this piece he is
surrounded by angels and God giving
the piece pictorial balance. The piece
is made up of shades of warm colors.
There is overlapping of the characters
in the pieces creating depth.
4. Orestes and Pylades by Piseteles.
This sculpture based on Greek
mythology shows the two friends
offering a sacrifice. The Canon of
proportions was used when the
artist was sculpting this piece all
body parts are in proportion. The
use of hierarchial scaling also
comes into play, the two main
focal points of the piece are much
larger than the figure in the back
corner creating more of an
emphasis on the larger two.
5. Venus with a shell by Mateo
Bonarelli. This sculpture of
Venus uses the Canon of
proportions. All her body
parts are well proportioned.
She is a Roman goddess who
stands for love and beauty.
Her beauty is depicted here in
this sculpture.

7. I chose these pieces because I felt they best represented the beliefs
of their cultures and time periods. Mythology goes back several
years and till this day is still studied. Their importance is
captured through the sculptures that are left behind and admired
today. Religion also goes back several years, and is still important
till this day. Although the sculptures and paintings do not seem
like they have much in common from content they do all have one
thing in common, and that is that they all tell a story and evoke
emotion to the viewer. That is what art is all about.
