This document outlines guidelines for instructors regarding the treatment of pregnant students at BYU-Hawaii. It states that pregnant students should contact the Disabilities Services office and provide a doctor's note to request accommodations, which may include a larger desk or more frequent bathroom breaks. Instructors are required to excuse medically necessary absences for pregnant students and allow them to make up any missed work, but are not expected to fundamentally change academic standards. No single instructor policy can override these legal mandates regarding reasonable accommodations for pregnant students.
3. • Here are some
important guidelines
regarding the treatment
of student’s pregnancy,
childbirth, false
pregnancy, termination
of pregnancy and
recovery therefrom.
In the following slides the term “pregnant” will refer to all states
of pregnancy as previously listed.
4. An instructor
cannot require a
pregnant student
to produce a
doctor’s note,
unless the same
requirement
applies to ALL
students being
treated by a
doctor.
5. Pregnant students applying
for accommodations should
contact the Disabilities
Services with an
accompanying doctor’s
note. Then she should
meet with her instructor for
a confidential discussion of
her needs.

6. When deemed necessary, an instructor
must make reasonable adjustments that
are responsive to a pregnant student.
These may include, but are not limited to,
providing a larger desk, allowing more
frequent trips to the restroom, etc.
7. Even though some accommodations
may be necessary, instructors are not
expected to fundamentally or
substantially modify or change the
nature of the course or academic
standards.
8. Title IX requires an instructor to excuse a
pregnant student’s absences for as long as
the student’s doctor deems medically
necessary.
9. No single instructor’s policy may serve as the
Exception to the rule or defer from these
legal mandates. A pregnant student must be
allowed to submit work after a deadline if her
condition is medically restricted by a doctor.
If part of the grade is based on attendance,
the student should be allowed to earn the
points missed.
10. If extended “bedrest” is prescribed by the
doctor, the instructor is required to
provide the student with the appropriate
assignments and information to make up
all classwork. She may be eligible for an
“I” grade, if appropriate.
