How to make an animated gif image using GIMP
GIMP provides one of the easiest methods to create an animated gif if you are
on a UNIX machine. The example above was made using the following steps:
Create the series of images you will use to make the animation. Save them
as Indexed Color GIF format images.
Launch GIMP by typing,
gimp
From the File pull-down menu Open the first of your GIF images
With the cursor over the first image, press the right button and scroll
down the menu to open the Layers | Layers & Channels window.
Press the New Layer icon on the Layers & Channels window
Your Layers & Channels window should now look something like this,

From the File pull-down menu Open the next GIF image.
With the cursor on the second image press the right button and scroll
down to Copy
With the cursor on the first image press the right button and scroll down
to Paste
Your Layers & Channels window should now look something like this,
With the cursor on the blue highlighted "Floating Selection" bar, press
the right button and scroll down to Anchor Layer
Your Layers & Channels window should now look something like this,
Now is a good time to start naming the layers so you won't get confused.
Highlight the Background layer icon and double click on the blue bar
over the label Background. This will give you a dialog box to rename the
layer to "Frame 1" Do the same with the New Layer and name it "Frame
2"
Your Layers & Channels window should now look something like this,
Perform the above steps with the remainder of your individual gif images.
When finished, hold the cursor over the first image, press the right button
and scroll down to File | Save As. Choose GIF as the File type, give it a
new name and click OK
In the Save as GIF window click Loop, a delay time (400 ms is a good
starting delay), and One frame per layer (replace).
When you open your saved image in a browser it will be animated. If the
delay time is not appropriate for your images, just re-save with a different
delay time.
