7 simple steps to build “word of mouth”
In an ever-changing business world, one of the toughest things to accomplish is “Word of Mouth”. What is it all
about? Is it marketing or it should be considered a derivative of the service you provide? So many things to
evaluate upfront like: what to seek for, how to go about building it and leveraging this great characteristic of
loyalty.
How happy are we when we get that call that starts with so and so said many great thinks about you/company.
Whether at the stage that you have business and are looking to expand or seeking effective ways to let more
prospects know about what you do and why they should choose you over the competition, “Word of Mouth” is the
ultimate property to build. Most likely you’re agile, have a small budget if any, wearing a bunch of different hats,
and or already established but you want to continue informing your channels. Here’s a list of how to easily set this
up:
1. Leverage the network
Analyze and evaluate who your immediate network is what they care about and speak from that angle. If
you’re doing great things for your clients let others know. Find that seam that prospects can benefit from
and use the right context to speak about what you’re doing.
2. Properly allocate effort
You have decided that you will move forward with this initiative. That’s great because you should be in for
the long haul. Be strategic to be able to accomplish goals but more important decide early on how much
time you will allocate for a cohesive effort.
3. Analytics and metrics
No program is successful without having a set target and proper analytics. Some people love
spreadsheets, others feel more comfortable using an online tool. Online is the suggested way to go here,
as you will want to know numbers as clicks, likes, comments, etc.
4. Expectations
It is equally important to manage your expectations. Don’t do it to just do it. If you’re looking for quick
results don’t bother with it as your time will be more valuable somewhere else. Start small with room to
grow.
5. Broken record
Content is king and to not sound like a broken record is more important than ever. If you keep “puking
product” you will lose your audience. At the end of the day, your readers are like your guests. You never
plan a party based solely on what you want/like to eat but rather evaluating the food for the whole group.
6. Stay fresh
Reflect on what is happening in your vertical(s) and utilize it to keep your content fresh. Update your
photos. Develop different topics and interests. In the beginning it might feel like you’re all over the place
but remember that you have to stay the course.
7. Pipeline
Whether you use social or other channels, it takes time to build an audience so when you hit that magic
number there will be attrition hence keep a well planned pipeline.
It’s no secret that to increase the probability of people being familiar with your product/service/company
in order to be chosen, improving online presence, social media contribution and publishing content are all
a must. At the same token nowadays people will research the company before they reach out thus more
reasons to work on this. The set of goals and desired outcomes are unique to each and everyone out
there taking this initiative. Therefore with all that in mind the above list will give you a fine blueprint to
create that “Word of Mouth”.
