A standard level of accommodation with a limited range of rooms and facilities. Rooms are clean and comfortable with basic furnishings.
Moderate accommodation with a reasonable range of rooms and facilities, with rooms furnished to a comfortable standard.
Superior standard of accommodation with a wide range of rooms and facilities, and a higher standard of service.

When selecting your accommodation please note that the overall quality of properties in Canada and Alaska is generally lower than equivalent priced properties
in other countries, particularly in the lower ratings.

family bonuses and specials. Your travel consultant will help you choose the hotel to best suits you and your family’s needs.

Take to the Ocean

From giant moose with jutting
antlers to polar bears in the very
north, the wildlife here is as
abundant as the maple syrup (or
Alaskan salmon).
Enjoy real-life encounters with
enormous whales; there are more
than 30 species in the Canadian
oceans, many of which are quite
acrobatic. Tour boats are kitted out
with whale-watching mod cons such
as elevated viewing platforms, 360
degree lookouts and hydrophones.
To witness the formidable ‘salmon
runs’ in all its leaping, writhing
glory, Autumn brings a mass of
thrashing salmon heading steadily
up Canada and Alaska’s streams.
Notably Adams River in British
Columbia, home to one of the
world’s most celebrated salmon
runs. Optimum grizzly bear viewing
months fall between spring and
autumn, before they take a gigantic
bear-sized nap for winter.
Everyone knows of the USA and
Route 66, but Canada is just as
epic for a road trip. This is history,
culture and natural beauty at its
very best, and with a massive
terrain of 9.985 million km²,
discovering this diverse land by
road is an absolute pleasure.
Coastline, prairies, mountains and
emerald lakes, it’s all in Canada.
The renowned Rocky Mountaineer
showcases North America’s
highest peaks, while the Alaska
Railroad network is immensely
popular in summer, its wide
windows and domes providing the
perfect vantage point.
Alaska is also famed for its float
planes. As the largest state in the
U.S., it’s also the least accessible
by road. Providing the perfect
excuse to take to the skies from
the water. What an experience!

6 TIPSfor your
Canada & Alaska
Holiday
The seasons vary considerably
in Canada and Alaska, and days,
just like in New Zealand, can
experience multiple weather
changes. In Alberta, the
temperature once changed from
-19ºC to 22ºC in just one hour.
Autumn in Canada’s north-west
territories brings breath taking
auroras and the great caribou
migration, while winter calls for
cosy log cabins and a roaring
fire. Winter enthusiasts will
revel in Alaska, when outdoor
adventures abound (dog mushing,
snowboarding, skiing, snowshoeing
and snowmobiling) and the
northern lights are in full glow.
There are dozens of Alaskan events
taking place in late February and
March. Then, in spring, Canadian
ice melts and bears awaken from
their slumber. Come summer,
everyone is outdoors again, but
this time in 25ºC sunshine.
3
Canada’s famed poutine is found
nationwide. A messy pile of chips,
cheese curds and gravy, it’s a
faultless combination. In Montréal,
La Banquise has more than 30
types to choose from and is open 24
hours a day. While Québec hosts an
annual ‘Poutine Week’ during the
first week of February.
Also in Canada, you’ll find maple
syrup in/on/poured over everything
and the Montréal Smoked Meat
Sandwich is not to be missed.
Alaska’s King Crab quite literally
rules the menu. The months
between October and January
provide the best time for tasting.
Devour huge platters of enormous
crab legs - fully cracked open and
dripping with a generous dose of
sauce. Equally sublime is crimson
Alaskan salmon. Naturally delicious,
you’ll need little more than black
pepper and a wedge of lemon.
Canada has a rich French heritage,
especially in Québec. Although
the vocabulary differs from that
in France, you’ll find plenty of
Francophile culture, which includes
Canadian influenced French cuisine.
Look out for tourquettes - lollies
made by pouring boiling maple syrup
onto snow.
The First Nations are the various
Aboriginal Canadians who are neither
Inuit nor Métis. Across the country
there are various cultural centres and
museums, but Vancouver’s Stanley
Park with its towering totem poles is
particularly impressive.
Alaskan traditions are so deep-rooted,
you’ll enjoy a full agenda of native
dancing, traditional music, crafts,
festivals and history. Of course, dog
sledding is a state obsession. Partake
in an excursion, or visit in March
when the 1850 kilometre Iditarod
Sled Dog Race from Anchorage to
Nome occurs.
You can see the Northern Lights in
both Canada and Alaska. The most
reliable spot in Alaska is Fairbanks
because it sits directly under the
aurora oval, whereas in Canada,
Yellowknife is the winter bolthole for
jaw-dropping aurora viewing.
Canada’s Icefields Parkway carves a
route through 100 ancient glaciers,
waterfalls and turquoise lakes
between Jasper and Lake Louise.
Remember to fill your tank before
you depart, there’s only one service
station en route.
Alaska hosts many impressive fjords,
but Kenai Fjords National Park tops
the lot for startling glaciers, as well
as the largest ice fields in the U.S.
Not to be outdone, Canada delights
visitors with the Rocky Mountains
and plentiful lakes, including
Lake Louise, which is flanked by
picture-perfect mountain peaks
and in winter, becomes a gigantic,
naturally-forming ice rink.

Awe-inspiring mountains, icefields, wind-rippled prairies and a coastline gashed
with fjords; Canada’s western-most provinces of British Columbia and Alberta have
some of the world’s most spectacular wilderness.
British Columbia melds this scenic splendour with the sophistication of Vancouver
and the old-world charm of its province capital, Victoria. Several magnificent rail
and road journeys begin on this western seaboard. The Sea to Sky Highway leads to
Whistler through majestic alpine scenery, with the Rocky Mountaineer train taking
a similar path. Join the Rocky Mountaineer on another great rail journey passing
through canyons and lakes on your way to neighbouring Alberta.
Set sail on the Pacific Ocean through the famed Inside Passage or cruise the
Discovery Coast. Not only is the landscape magnificent but the land and sea
abounds with wildlife, including whales, sea lions, bears and elk.
Sublime alpine Lake Louise and mountain resorts, including Banff and Jasper,
entice travellers inland to Alberta. Calgary and its famous stampede and Edmonton,
Canada’s festival city, which boasts the world’s largest shopping and entertainment
complex, add to its allure.
Both provinces are home to many First Nations – Canada’s original inhabitants.
Discover their ancient culture by sleeping in a tipi or watching traditional dances.
Kayak along routes used by centuries of fur trappers or paddle across tranquil
fjords in the company of otters and porpoises.

A perfect day in Victoria, Vancouver Island
Our favourite things to see and do
Beacon Hill Park – Wander around this beautiful park filled with native
habitats and manicured gardens. Try a spot of bird watching or sit and
watch the world go by.
Rogers’ Chocolate Shop – No visit to Victoria is complete without
visiting Rogers’ Chocolate shop. The first chocolates were made here in
1885 and they haven’t looked back since. Try one of their many flavours or
take some home as a gift.
Dining – With the second highest number of restaurants per capita in
North America, Victoria is a culinary paradise. Many of the city’s top chefs
focus their menus on products grown on Vancouver Island.
Shopping – Four blocks along Government Street turn into Trounce
Alley, one of Victoria’s best kept secrets. Fashion and gift shops await.
Across the street is Bastion Square, once the site of Victoria’s Court
House, a brothel and several hangings, it is now full with shops and
restaurants.
Ghost Tours – Victoria is said to be one of the most haunted towns
in British Columbia with over 5000 years of history. Explore historic
courtyards, alleys and hear some scary stories.
Museums – From the oldest maritime museum in Western Canada to
the Naval and Military Museum, you’ll find a lot of interesting facts and
artefacts on show in Victoria.
Golf – Victoria is a golfer’s dream. With a climate that encourages golfing
year-round, Victoria and Vancouver Island are home to many of Canada’s
most beautiful and challenging courses.
Culinary Tours – Join a culinary walking tour of Victoria. A couple of
our favourites are the Knife and Fork Culinary Tour and the Craft Beer

Wineries – Just a short drive north of Victoria you’ll find a cluster of
wineries along the Saanich Peninsula, many of which are small and
family-owned. The Peninsula is also home to a cidery as well as parks
and organic farms. Take a day to sip and sample on the way to Butchart
Gardens.
On the southern tip of Vancouver Island, an elegant reminder of the British
Empire lives on as the capital of British Columbia. Victoria, with its iconic
Provincial Legislature buildings and Empress Hotel, provides a remarkable
contrast to the untamed landscapes that surround it.
Victoria is well known for the amazing Butchart Gardens just 20 minutes
outside downtown. A designated National Historic Site, Butchart has over
50 acres of magnificent gardens to explore. Take a stroll through themed
gardens linked by spacious lawns, streams and lily ponds. The gardens were
established in 1904 and are in the style of the grand estates of the time.
If you happen to be in Victoria between April-October you can’t go past
a whale watching trip. For a real thrill head out on a zodiac, or take the
leisurely option on a covered boat. Head out in search of minke whales,
gray whales, harbour seals and other marine life. If you’re lucky enough you
might be able to spot one of the resident orcas that live near Victoria year
round.
Join a cycling tour where you can explore the sights and sounds of James
Bay and Oak Bay and get an insightful commentary on what makes Victoria
one of the most treasured cities in the world.
You must’ve worked up an appetite by now, so for a treat why not indulge in
a traditional afternoon tea in the Empress’ Tea Lobby and reminisce on the
grandeur of a bygone era.
Getting to and from Victoria couldn’t be easier. Take a leisurely 90 minute
ferry ride across the gulf or spoil yourself and take a 35 minute floatplane

crumble accompanies a cup of their

Lake Louise is a year round destination and in
winter you’ll be busy with world-class skiing, ice
skating and sleigh rides.

stories of early explorers in the valley at the
Columbia Icefields Centre. If you’re game head

Calgary, where the Canadian prairies collide with the Rocky Mountains,
is Canada’s oil town. With its fortunes tied to energy prices it’s either
boom or bust here; a whiff of the Wild West still wafts around its glitzy
shopping malls and skyscrapers. Calgary was established in the 19th
century as a headquarters for the Mounted Police, but it was also a
railway town and fur trading post.
Enjoy breakfast at one of the many restaurants and cafés on Stephen
Avenue Walk before checking out one of the art galleries or boutiques
along this daytime pedestrian mall. A popular gathering place for the
locals is nearby Olympic Plaza where in warmer weather you’ll find a
wading pool and in the cooler months, ice skating.
It’s easy to lose track of time at Heritage Park Historical Village, Canada’s
largest living history museum, just a short drive from Calgary downtown.

You can’t miss Canada’s most iconic visitor experience. Niagara Falls
is spectacular by day or night and just a 2 hour drive south of Toronto,

glory is mid-May to mid-September, however it does get crowded in the
peak July/August months.

Old Montréal is European in character and the primary language spoken

and
18th
century architecture all contribute to the quaint charm that is unique
amongst cities in North America. So put on your walking shoes and head
out to discover this beautiful city.
Start your day with a visit to the Notre-Dame Basilica of Montréal. This

history. In the evening a sound and light show presents the founding of
Montréal and the Notre-Dame Basilica.

A perfect day in Québec City
Our favourite things to see and do
Dufferin Terrace – Overlooking Old Québec from its perch just below the
Fairmont Le Château Frontenac, this is the perfect place for spectacular
views of the St. Lawrence River. If you’re game in the winter months have a
go on the ice slide.
Quartier Petit-Champlain – The oldest shopping district in North America
with narrow cobblestone streets, boutique shops, bistros and cafés spilling
out of restored buildings.
Place Royal – A small square with a big history. It was here that the city was
founded in 1608. Today Place Royale takes visitors back in time with the help
of the oldest stone church in North America and a massive mural that traces
400 years of Québec history.
Montmorency Falls Park – About a 15 minute drive from Old Québec,
along the St. Lawrence River, you’ll find Montmorency Falls an 82 metre tall
waterfall. This is a great place to head to escape the city as there are many
hiking and biking trails in the park. You can head to the top of the falls by a
staircase, or for the more leisurely option, take the cable car to the top.
Battlefields Park – If you have an interest in colonial history you need to
spend time exploring Battlefields Park. This park witnessed the sealing of
Canada’s fate in the Battle of Québec in 1775. Battlefields Park also offers
stunning views over Québec City.

March, you’ll find the Ice Hotel. Just about everything here is made from

military and culture, Québec City has a museum for any interest.
Fortifications of Québec – Québec is a walled city – North America’s
only remaining one. The fortifications are around 4.5 kilometres in length
and are part of a defence system, built between 1608 and 1871. Take a tour
along the walls to learn their history and enjoy views of the historic city
and St. Lawrence River. Follow the walls right to the Citadel, a star-shaped
fortress where you can see the Changing of the Guard ceremony and
watch muskets being fired.
Parliament Hill – Standing prominently on top of the hill, the building
is home to Québec’s parliament and a beautiful piece of architecture,
inspired by the Louvre in Paris. It’s especially pretty at night when it is lit
up.
If you’re a first-time visitor to Québec, it may be worth writing on
your hand: ‘I am in Canada’. The cobbled streets, 17th
century houses,
the walled clifftop location above the Saint Lawrence River and
conversations taking place in French all around you – you may start
to wonder which continent you are on. With typically Gallic flair, the
predominantly Francophone locals have created a year-round carnival
atmosphere with street performers, festivals and exhibitions.
Start your day by taking a wander around Old Québec. Here you’ll
find quaint old stone buildings and narrow, winding streets clustered
around the city’s harbour. This historic neighbourhood (and a UNESCO
World Heritage site) houses some of the city’s most notable attractions
including the Notre-Dame Basilica.
Now it’s time to eat! Québec City’s cuisine has strong French ties, which
can be found in its hearty stews, meat pies, speciality chocolate shops,
bakeries, crêperies and cafés that fill the streets. A popular dish to try is
poutine: French fries smothered in fresh cheese curds and topped with a
hot gravy (a lot more delicious than it sounds). For a distinctly Canadian
meal, head to La Traite where the menu features ingredients that have
been locally caught or picked.
Work off your lunch by climbing the Breakneck Stairs. Over 30 sets of
stairs that link the Lower Town with the Upper Town that were built in
1635.

Spend your morning visiting some of Halifax’s highlights and the city’s
vibrant waterfront is a great place to start. Lively Historic Properties is three
city blocks of Canada’s oldest surviving group of waterfront warehouses
- now home to a diverse collection of speciality boutiques, pubs and
restaurants. From here you can choose from a variety of harbour sailing
tours, from a sailing ship to an amphibious tour to a slow cruise along the
waterfront on a paddle boat.
Or take a voyage of discovery through Nova Scotia’s rich maritime heritage
at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic. Among the museum’s thousands
of marine treasures is the world’s finest collection of wooden artefacts from
the Titanic.
Experience the Alexander Keith’s Nova Scotia Brewery, one of the oldest
breweries in Canada. Take in the Red Stag Pub where costumed interpreters
will bring 1863 Halifax to life in story and song as they lead you through the
various parts of the massive ironstone and granite building.
This afternoon head south to the most photographed lighthouse in the
world at Peggy’s Cove, on the rugged Atlantic shoreline. Explore the rocks,
trails and quaint village that has been an artist’s paradise for well over
150 years. Don’t miss a dinner of some of the freshest Nova Scotia seafood,
lobster is their specialty but also try the mussels or fresh St. Margaret’s Bay
haddock.

Touring by Rental Car
Driving in Canada
Exploring Canada and Alaska by car is easy.
Driving on the right hand side of the road may
be different, however the roads are excellent,
well sign-posted and spacious. Just remember
the centre line should be by the driver!
Choosing your Rental Car
Take into consideration the size of the vehicle
you require. If the vehicle is to be used for
day touring from a central base, then a
smaller vehicle may be adequate and easier
for parking. If doing longer travel, remember
you will have luggage to transport around as
well as the shopping, so a midsize to larger
vehicle should be considered. We suggest you
book before leaving home, as this will save you
money and ensure that you get the vehicle of
your choice.
Emergency Roadside Assistance
While each vehicle is serviced and cared for individually there may be
an instance that you need some assistance. You can be rest assured
that in Canada and Alaska, Hertz provides Emergency Roadside
Assistance 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Hertz NeverLost
Hertz NeverLost satellite navigation system is available at a surcharge,
in certain vehicle types at selected airport and downtown locations
across the country. The system has extensive detailed mapping, a
wide easy-to-use full-colour touch-screen that provides access to
turn-by-turn directions to points of interest including hotels and
petrol stations, simply by touching an icon. Ideal for the independent
traveller as you get to see and enjoy your surroundings instead of
trying to read a map.
Things to think about:
•• Driving licence requirements
•• Minimum age restrictions and driving restrictions
•• Additional driver conditions
•• Deposits
•• One way rental fees
•• Peak period surcharges
•• Optional equipment e.g. child seats, roof racks
•• Neverlost is recommended
•• Fuel policy
•• When you collect your car, Hertz will take an imprint of your
credit card as security. The credit card must be in the renter’s
name. Depending on rate type booked, additional taxes, fees and
insurances may also apply at this time.

before planning to book.

Explore by Rail
The sheer scale of Canada can be daunting,
however travelling by rail will take you to
places you simply can’t get to by vehicle,
and you will be amazed by what you get to
see. On Rocky Mountaineer trains you can
enjoy the awe inspiring landscapes from
the large picture windows on this luxury
journey. VIA Rail is Canada’s national train
network spanning the entire country and
offering either point to point services or
passes with the romance of traditional train
travel in three classes of service. You can stay
onboard for any overnight route on VIA Rail.
Want to visit just one or two cities? Then point to point fares may be
all that is required. VIA Rail offers a wide range of fares with a choice
of economy or business class seating on most sectors, which can be
pre-reserved before you leave home to avoid disappointment. Point to
point fares also offer greater availability than a pass during peak seasons.
From coast to coast and north to Hudson Bay, you can experience
unforgettable scenery including some that can only be seen by train as
you crisscross your way through Canada.
If you require complete access to the VIA Rail network, the Canrail Pass
gives you unlimited travel in Canada on the VIA Rail network from the
Atlantic to the Pacific and up to Hudson Bay. Travel between 12 and 15
days during a 30 day period with unlimited stops. At an additional cost,
sleeper berths and private cabins are available.
VIA Rail Point to Point Services
If you’re travelling between Toronto and Vancouver or Toronto/
Vancouver to Winnipeg, why not treat yourself to a higher level of
comfort in the Prestige Sleeper Class. Some Prestige Class highlights
are: personalised dedicated service provided by the Prestige Concierge,
leather couch by day and a Murphy bed for two by night facing the
window, private washroom with shower, spacious cabins, access to the
Prestige Park car with complimentary bar service, snacks and speciality
coffees. Delicious meals are freshly prepared by chefs onboard and
include regional specialities and a selection of Canadian wines, all
enjoyed in the comfort of the dining car. Every detail of this grand class
of service is designed to make your Canadian rail journey unforgettable.

  • 6. 2 From giant moose with jutting antlers to polar bears in the very north, the wildlife here is as abundant as the maple syrup (or Alaskan salmon). Enjoy real-life encounters with enormous whales; there are more than 30 species in the Canadian oceans, many of which are quite acrobatic. Tour boats are kitted out with whale-watching mod cons such as elevated viewing platforms, 360 degree lookouts and hydrophones. To witness the formidable ‘salmon runs’ in all its leaping, writhing glory, Autumn brings a mass of thrashing salmon heading steadily up Canada and Alaska’s streams. Notably Adams River in British Columbia, home to one of the world’s most celebrated salmon runs. Optimum grizzly bear viewing months fall between spring and autumn, before they take a gigantic bear-sized nap for winter. Everyone knows of the USA and Route 66, but Canada is just as epic for a road trip. This is history, culture and natural beauty at its very best, and with a massive terrain of 9.985 million km², discovering this diverse land by road is an absolute pleasure. Coastline, prairies, mountains and emerald lakes, it’s all in Canada. The renowned Rocky Mountaineer showcases North America’s highest peaks, while the Alaska Railroad network is immensely popular in summer, its wide windows and domes providing the perfect vantage point. Alaska is also famed for its float planes. As the largest state in the U.S., it’s also the least accessible by road. Providing the perfect excuse to take to the skies from the water. What an experience! Spectacular seasons Wildlife on the move Trains, planes and automobiles 6 TIPSfor your Canada & Alaska Holiday The seasons vary considerably in Canada and Alaska, and days, just like in New Zealand, can experience multiple weather changes. In Alberta, the temperature once changed from -19ºC to 22ºC in just one hour. Autumn in Canada’s north-west territories brings breath taking auroras and the great caribou migration, while winter calls for cosy log cabins and a roaring fire. Winter enthusiasts will revel in Alaska, when outdoor adventures abound (dog mushing, snowboarding, skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling) and the northern lights are in full glow. There are dozens of Alaskan events taking place in late February and March. Then, in spring, Canadian ice melts and bears awaken from their slumber. Come summer, everyone is outdoors again, but this time in 25ºC sunshine.
  • 7. 3 Canada’s famed poutine is found nationwide. A messy pile of chips, cheese curds and gravy, it’s a faultless combination. In Montréal, La Banquise has more than 30 types to choose from and is open 24 hours a day. While Québec hosts an annual ‘Poutine Week’ during the first week of February. Also in Canada, you’ll find maple syrup in/on/poured over everything and the Montréal Smoked Meat Sandwich is not to be missed. Alaska’s King Crab quite literally rules the menu. The months between October and January provide the best time for tasting. Devour huge platters of enormous crab legs - fully cracked open and dripping with a generous dose of sauce. Equally sublime is crimson Alaskan salmon. Naturally delicious, you’ll need little more than black pepper and a wedge of lemon. Canada has a rich French heritage, especially in Québec. Although the vocabulary differs from that in France, you’ll find plenty of Francophile culture, which includes Canadian influenced French cuisine. Look out for tourquettes - lollies made by pouring boiling maple syrup onto snow. The First Nations are the various Aboriginal Canadians who are neither Inuit nor Métis. Across the country there are various cultural centres and museums, but Vancouver’s Stanley Park with its towering totem poles is particularly impressive. Alaskan traditions are so deep-rooted, you’ll enjoy a full agenda of native dancing, traditional music, crafts, festivals and history. Of course, dog sledding is a state obsession. Partake in an excursion, or visit in March when the 1850 kilometre Iditarod Sled Dog Race from Anchorage to Nome occurs. You can see the Northern Lights in both Canada and Alaska. The most reliable spot in Alaska is Fairbanks because it sits directly under the aurora oval, whereas in Canada, Yellowknife is the winter bolthole for jaw-dropping aurora viewing. Canada’s Icefields Parkway carves a route through 100 ancient glaciers, waterfalls and turquoise lakes between Jasper and Lake Louise. Remember to fill your tank before you depart, there’s only one service station en route. Alaska hosts many impressive fjords, but Kenai Fjords National Park tops the lot for startling glaciers, as well as the largest ice fields in the U.S. Not to be outdone, Canada delights visitors with the Rocky Mountains and plentiful lakes, including Lake Louise, which is flanked by picture-perfect mountain peaks and in winter, becomes a gigantic, naturally-forming ice rink. • 8. 4 Awe-inspiring mountains, icefields, wind-rippled prairies and a coastline gashed with fjords; Canada’s western-most provinces of British Columbia and Alberta have some of the world’s most spectacular wilderness. British Columbia melds this scenic splendour with the sophistication of Vancouver and the old-world charm of its province capital, Victoria. Several magnificent rail and road journeys begin on this western seaboard. The Sea to Sky Highway leads to Whistler through majestic alpine scenery, with the Rocky Mountaineer train taking a similar path. Join the Rocky Mountaineer on another great rail journey passing through canyons and lakes on your way to neighbouring Alberta. Set sail on the Pacific Ocean through the famed Inside Passage or cruise the Discovery Coast. Not only is the landscape magnificent but the land and sea abounds with wildlife, including whales, sea lions, bears and elk. Sublime alpine Lake Louise and mountain resorts, including Banff and Jasper, entice travellers inland to Alberta. Calgary and its famous stampede and Edmonton, Canada’s festival city, which boasts the world’s largest shopping and entertainment complex, add to its allure. Both provinces are home to many First Nations – Canada’s original inhabitants. Discover their ancient culture by sleeping in a tipi or watching traditional dances. Kayak along routes used by centuries of fur trappers or paddle across tranquil fjords in the company of otters and porpoises. • 15. 11 A perfect day in Victoria, Vancouver Island Our favourite things to see and do Beacon Hill Park – Wander around this beautiful park filled with native habitats and manicured gardens. Try a spot of bird watching or sit and watch the world go by. Rogers’ Chocolate Shop – No visit to Victoria is complete without visiting Rogers’ Chocolate shop. The first chocolates were made here in 1885 and they haven’t looked back since. Try one of their many flavours or take some home as a gift. Dining – With the second highest number of restaurants per capita in North America, Victoria is a culinary paradise. Many of the city’s top chefs focus their menus on products grown on Vancouver Island. Shopping – Four blocks along Government Street turn into Trounce Alley, one of Victoria’s best kept secrets. Fashion and gift shops await. Across the street is Bastion Square, once the site of Victoria’s Court House, a brothel and several hangings, it is now full with shops and restaurants. Ghost Tours – Victoria is said to be one of the most haunted towns in British Columbia with over 5000 years of history. Explore historic courtyards, alleys and hear some scary stories. Museums – From the oldest maritime museum in Western Canada to the Naval and Military Museum, you’ll find a lot of interesting facts and artefacts on show in Victoria. Golf – Victoria is a golfer’s dream. With a climate that encourages golfing year-round, Victoria and Vancouver Island are home to many of Canada’s most beautiful and challenging courses. Culinary Tours – Join a culinary walking tour of Victoria. A couple of our favourites are the Knife and Fork Culinary Tour and the Craft Beer Culinary Tour. Both offer a variety of yummy food. Wineries – Just a short drive north of Victoria you’ll find a cluster of wineries along the Saanich Peninsula, many of which are small and family-owned. The Peninsula is also home to a cidery as well as parks and organic farms. Take a day to sip and sample on the way to Butchart Gardens. On the southern tip of Vancouver Island, an elegant reminder of the British Empire lives on as the capital of British Columbia. Victoria, with its iconic Provincial Legislature buildings and Empress Hotel, provides a remarkable contrast to the untamed landscapes that surround it. Victoria is well known for the amazing Butchart Gardens just 20 minutes outside downtown. A designated National Historic Site, Butchart has over 50 acres of magnificent gardens to explore. Take a stroll through themed gardens linked by spacious lawns, streams and lily ponds. The gardens were established in 1904 and are in the style of the grand estates of the time. If you happen to be in Victoria between April-October you can’t go past a whale watching trip. For a real thrill head out on a zodiac, or take the leisurely option on a covered boat. Head out in search of minke whales, gray whales, harbour seals and other marine life. If you’re lucky enough you might be able to spot one of the resident orcas that live near Victoria year round. Join a cycling tour where you can explore the sights and sounds of James Bay and Oak Bay and get an insightful commentary on what makes Victoria one of the most treasured cities in the world. You must’ve worked up an appetite by now, so for a treat why not indulge in a traditional afternoon tea in the Empress’ Tea Lobby and reminisce on the grandeur of a bygone era. Getting to and from Victoria couldn’t be easier. Take a leisurely 90 minute ferry ride across the gulf or spoil yourself and take a 35 minute floatplane trip where you’ll be awarded with amazing views of the gulf. Skiing and snowboarding equipment rental shops are conveniently located throughout the village. There is so much to do in Whistler, it’s hard to know where to begin. Take a ride up Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains and hop on the Peak 2 Peak Gondola. The journey between the two provides a 360 degree window into Whistler Blackcomb’s alpine environment. You could quite easily spend a whole day up here exploring the many hiking trails and must-sees such as Black Tusk, Overlord Glacier and the Inukshuks (the iconic Whistler photo op) but there is also plenty to do in the valley below. Explore by bike on the paved Valley Trail that runs 40 kilometres and connects trails with beaches, lakes and golf courses, or simply spend time soaking up the atmosphere in this pedestrian-only village as you meander around the shops and restaurants.
