The document summarizes the internship of Kenyatta Grate at Roger C. Peace Rehabilitation Hospital. It describes the hospital as an outpatient rehabilitation facility that is part of Greenville Health Systems. It provides physical, occupational, and speech therapy. The internship involved assisting patients in physical therapy, including with exercises, balance activities, and equipment like the Balance Master machine. The intern also created informational handouts for prosthetics patients and completed a case study. After 181 hours, the intern remains committed to becoming a physical therapist.

3. Roger Peace is a part of the Greenville Health Systems and is the
outpatient hospital for their rehabilitation services. Other medical
facilities sometimes send their patients to this outpatient hospital
as well if they are in need of long-term or short-term physical
therapy, occupational therapy, and/or speech therapy. Although
they are in the same building, three disciplines are separate from
each other. Each field has a certain area where they treat their
patients, but for those patients who n Under their physical therapy
department there are also specialty areas that make Roger C.
Peace more unique compared to other rehabilitation facilities in
the area. There are therapists who specialize in lymphedema,
orthopedics, neurological, spinal cord, and vestibular treatments.
4. MISSION STATEMENT

Outpatient Rehabilitation:
1. Provide therapeutic interventions to prevent complications,
preserve function, and maximize functional independence.

6. • The physical therapy department is where I completed the majority of my
internship experience. This one department is broken down into smaller
specialized areas for those therapists who focus on specific treatments. There is
the lymphedema hallway, the orthopedic room, and the vestibular and spinal
cord specialist typically share the same area.

7. MAIN GYM
This is the main gym
area where the majority
of the patients are seen.
This area is typically
occupied by therapists
and patients who are
being treated for
neurological, spinal cord,
and vestibular
conditions. There are
times when other
patients are treated in
this area as well.
8. ORTHOPEDIC
GYM
This is the smaller gym
where most orthopedic
treatments occur. It is
equipped with cycles,
range of motion
equipment, and other
strength training tools
that may be needed for
a patient to reach their
full recovery.
9. A LIST OF MY DUTIES…
During the first few weeks of my internship there
was a limit to the types of tasks I could handle as a
student intern. One of the first things I remember
doing is following a patient with a wheelchair while
they tried walking with a walker down the hallway.
Although this was a simple job, I was still extremely
excited to do it because it was my first interaction
with a patient.
10. After the physical therapists saw
how well I communicated with
the patients, they then allowed
me to help set the patients up
for each of their therapy
treatments. I would strap them
down for the cycling exercises
and make sure their posture and
feet were planted in the correct
way to do leg press. Of course
they came behind me to make
sure I had everything correct, but
having this small responsibility
really meant a lot.
11. Under close supervision, I was able
to assist the patients with their
balance exercises. This was one of
my favorite things to do because not
only did the therapist believe that I
would do a great job, but the
patients also trusted me enough to
know I wouldn’t let them fall. Again,
this may seem like another simple
task, but gaining a patients trust is
something I believe is important
when working in the medical field.
This was extremely important during
those times when we would have
them close their eyes and perform
these balance exercises.
12. Many patients who had a problem with
balance were tested throughout their
time in rehab on this machine called the
Balance Master. Due to its frequent
movements, patients had to be
harnessed inside to prevent injuries
from occurring. One of my jobs
involved me strapping them in the vest
and then connecting the vest to the
machine.
13. Working with the Balance Master
was definitely one of my most
favorite things done while at my
internship site. Although it is one of
the most hated things by the
patients, I loved it because of the
many features that it entails. It has
capabilities of making the floor and
the walls move while also watching
things move across the screen in
front of you. When I got on it for the
first time, I understood why the
patients hated it so much. It is very
challenging! At the end of your
testing session, it will show you
where you are compared to other
individuals of the same age. On the
next slide I have included my testing
results for when I used the Balance

15. PROJECTS
COMPLETED
During the duration of my internship I worked on a total of
three projects. The first two focused on information that
patients who have prosthetics may benefit from. The third
project was a case study of a patient who I followed from his
first visit up until his last visit.
16. This handout gives basic tips for the
care of prosthetics and the residual
limb. The therapist at RCP found this to
be important because they noticed that
many patients had a tendency to forget
the procedures their prosthesis would
tell them to complete. They noticed
that the information typically given to
these patients include a load of
information that they don’t really read.
With this handout, they can see the
most important things they should
remember to do involving their
amputations.
17. This handout talks about the
feeling that some patients get
after an amputation. The purpose
of this handout is to reassure
them that this feeling is normal
and to help them understand the
different methods that can be
used to decrease this feeling.
18. Summary of case study:
Patient X suffered from a number of injuries after a car accident that led
him to the hospital. After being diagnosed with an uncommon type of
fracture to the hip, the physical therapists at Roger C. Peace developed a
strategic plan to ensure his full recovery. After weeks of therapy and at-
home exercises, Patient X left the facility with the ability to walk without his
assistive device that he once used during his first few visits.
19. FINAL JUDGEMENT
After completing a total of 181 hours at Roger C. Peace, my dream
of becoming a physical therapist remains the same. I learned so
many things about therapy and treatments options while interning
here. The therapists were very friendly and allowed me to take on
responsibilities that I would soon face in Physical Therapy School. I
look forward to continuing this pursuit to becoming a physical
therapist. Now that I am aware of the many specialties within
physical therapy, I am excited to see which one I will eventually
choose as my specialty area.
