Cereal Sugar and Price Analysis
1. Heather Nibley
Math 1040
Term Project
My first quantitative variable is the amount of sugar in cereal. The Unit of measurement for this variable is grams/oz. A few possible values for this first quantitative variable are 295g, 181g, and 13g.
My second quantitative variable is the cost per box of cereal. The unit of measurement for this variable is 25oz. A few possible values for this second quantitative variable are $3.38, $6.38, and $4.84.
My research question is Does the price of cereal relate to the amount of sugar?
To answer this research question, I would gather data as follows: Each member of my group was assigned 15 different types of cereal to gather information on. We choose to research, Post, General Mills, Kelloggs, and Malt-O-Meal. Each group member collected the price of the cereal, the amount of sugar in total, the serving size and the amount of sugar in the serving size. To create an even foundation and easy calculation, we estimated each box to be 25oz and then calculated the amount of sugar from 25oz box of cereal.
First quantitative variable:
Mean: 5.56
Standard Deviation: 2.5247
5 Number summary: 3.65, 3.74, 4.03, 5.17, and 6.36
Range: 6.51
Mode: 3.10, 3.74, 4.74, 5.17, and 4.33
Outliers: Some boxes of cereal were on sale so the original price was not available
Second quantitative variable:
Mean: 232
Standard Deviation:
5 Number Summary: 64, 150, 250, 375, 417
Mode: 150
Range: 750
Outliers: Some cereals were fat free so the original amounts of sugar were not listed.
