2. Plot.
Directed by Andrew Douglas.
Detective Inspector Sarah Clayton tries to find out why schoolboy Mark would want to stab
his friend Jon. The two were supposed to be friends, yet Mark kept saying, when
questioned, that the crime was necessary. As she starts to investigating into the crime and
the two teenagers, she finds out that Mark talked to a lot of people on chatrooms and
became fascinated with Rachel, Jon's sister, while talking to her in a chatroom. She
manages to convince him to befriend her brother Jon. Mark quickly begins to fall in love
with her, after finding out about her domestic abuse by her boyfriend Kevin and believing
that they cannot meet because she's in a witness protection program. He's outrage when
Jon tells him that Kevin has killed Rachel, convincing Mark to begin planning revenge
against Kevin. Mark's sanity has been slowly falling apart. Mark begins his plans to stab
Jon after another online friend, MI5 agent Janet, tells him that Jon is being used in a
terrorist plot and is going to shot everyone at school. It is then revealed that Jon planned
the entire thing and that he pretended to be Rachel, Janet and even Rachel's boyfriend.
Non of them really existed.
3. Characters and how
they are a typical
thriller character.
• Jamie Blackley as Mark- In some ways he is a
character in a twisted relationship as he was
convinced to stab someone and was ready to
stab someone else because of a relationship.
• Toby Regbo as Jon- world weary person as he was
always worried about being caught.
• Joanne Froggatt as Detective Inspector Sarah
Clayton- cop.
• Liz White as Janet-MI5 agent.
• Jaime Winstone as Rachel- Menaced women.
• Mingus Johnston as Kevin- criminal.
4. Themes and messages.
The film has themes on stalking, revenge and obsession because mark
became obsessed with Jon's sister Rachel and wanting to get revenge. It
also has the theme of investigation as the whole film was about finding out
why Mark stabbed Jon.
I think the message of this film is always be careful of who you talk to on the
internet and think about if you actually know them before you get personal
with them.
5. Techniques.
Low key lighting.
Chiaroscuro.
The film uses a lot of low key lighting as
you can see from the picture. This will be
used to give a dark feeling. Similarly the
weather was moody throughout the film
this give the same effect.
Because the film used low key lighting it
meant it had some chiaroscuro like in the
picture. This give the film a very
mysterious feeling as you cant see the
characters emotions and sometimes
what they are doing.
6. Close ups.
Extreme close up.
The close ups in this film were mainly
used to show the characters emotions at
the time. As you can see clearly see from
the picture that Jon is unhappy and
slightly scared.
The extreme close ups were mainly used
to exaggerate the words on the
chatrooms. For example here the words
kill someone are zoomed into to create a
eerie sense of the words.
7. Dramatic angles.
The use of dramatic angles here makes the audience
question what he is doing there. Because at that point of
the film he has found that Rachel fell from that exact block
of flat, so it makes the audience question if he will jump
aswell or if he’s going to see someone.
