Slide 1- Hello Mt Gravatt, Hanrietta, Hafsa and I are from lifeline Australia and we are here to talk to you
about suicide and how to prevent it. Before I start, I would like to ask you all a question, how many
deaths per year do you think is caused by suicide? Well in 2022, there were 917 deaths in Australia.
This presentation will include facts and statistics relating to teen and young adult suicide, the meaning of
suicide, sustainable ways to prevent it, how this topic is related to the MGH community and our proposal
to help decrease suicidal rates. This presentation was created by Eadith, Henrietta, and Hafsa. (There will
be a quiz at the end so pay attention).
Slide 2 what is suicide? – Suicide is death caused by injuring oneself with the intent to die. A suicide
attempt is when someone harms themselves with any intent to end their life, but they do not die as a
result of their actions.
There are many factors that could lead to someone resulting in, or have a higher chance at resulting in
suicide, which includes; people who have been through child abuse, bullying, sexual violence, over
stressing and more.
Teenagers and young adults are the most common age group to take their own lives according to the
Australian institute and welfare, and with all of us being within this group, we need to be aware of the
people around us, and if this horrible action is done by one of us.
Slide 3 background info- the following graph shows how many
people per age group commit suicide in Australia. It shows that
age group for females aged 15-19, have an average of around 400
people per 100,000 people around the world per year commit
suicide. For males ages 15-19, the average suicide rate per
100,000 is around 150 people. This is a massive amount of people
who struggled so much to live with themselves that they resulted
in ending their own lives. The graph also shows many people in
their early 20’s who also commit suicide, as well as people in their early 40’s. Because of these statistics,
Australia was known to be one of the most suicidal countries for youth. This sad thing is, is that this issue
doesn’t have to happen and should not be happening as sustainable methods are available to reduce this
health issue. Which is why we are here today to talk to you about how to prevent you, and help prevent
others, from committing suicide through sustainable and preventative health practices.
Slide 4 identify demographic- 1
In 2020, suicide was the most common cause of death for young people aged 15-24 years. 402 people
aged 15-24 died by suicide, representing 13 deaths by suicide per 100,000 people in Australia.
For the students here at Mt Gravatt, this is a big problem for us, because suicide has occurred within our
community. Our school should provide safety, and a positive impact to their students and workers health.
So, as a group, we have come up with a solution to help impact the number of suicides within our
community and reduce self-harm.
Slide 5 propose activity-
Our activity/proposal is ‘suicide prevention week’. Our activities are chosen to improve three of the 4
health dimensions ones mental, social and physical health. Activities for sustainable mental health will
calm the participator and let their mind go from stress and worries in life, according to myhealth.org.,
these activities can include crafts/art, meditation, watching movies etc. Good physical health allows your
body to feel better and healthier and possible help you find interests. Some of these activities include
2. sports, work outs, walking groups or anything involving physical work. Someone’s social health is vital
when it comes prevention, as unhealthy relationships lead to stress, but healthy relationships can lead to
growth and a happier lifestyle. These activities include any kind of group activity such as sport, or ‘get to
know you’ sessions, or most other activities. The structure for the program is this:
Our activity will occur every term for a week, for separate grades.
Everyone in that grade will participate in the sustainable health activities.
In term 1, grades 7 and 8 will have the activities for a week, not combined, the same goes for the
middle grades and seniors.
The activities throughout the 5 days will change. Monday will have a mental day, including
relaxational activities such as watching movies or meditating as mentioned before. Tuesday, for
the 7s, 8’s and 9’s will be an active/sporty day, as they are already in uniform. The sport will be
chosen by the participants. For seniors on Tuesday, they will have a social day, including
confirmations and friend forming activities. Wednesdays will be the 10-12’s sports days, same set
up as the jr’s. For the jr’s on Wednesday, they will have the confirmation sessions. For Thursdays,
it will be a community service act such as cleaning the environment or visiting a nursing home.
And finally for Fridays, it will be another mental relaxation day.
Slide 6 justify activity/sustainability-
Sustainable health is a personal commitment to maintaining and taking responsibility for your own
health, through proactive means. This means not only having regular exercise, and taking care of what we
eat, but also maintaining a healthy and balanced state of mind.
Suicide is the result from over stressing, social/family problems, and much more negative impacts to
people’s lives, which is horrible for someone’s social and mental health, as it negatively impacts your
mind and connections with others. Our proposal is to encourage people to achieve good sustainable
health through new likings, friendships and possibilities to help/distract them from and stresses int their
lives, and relax themselves, which will help gain healthier mental, physical and social health.
Slide 7 conclusion-
We would now like show you all a video summarising the PowerPoint.
