3. Social Loafing
• Social loafing occurs when persons are performing a task as
part of a group and individual effort cannot be identified.
Because all members of the group are pooling their effort to
achieve a common goal, each member of the group
contributes less than they would if they were individually
responsible.
• This situation can be seen where Herbert played a role as part
of the group but he plans to slack and that can be consider
as a social loafing because his individual effort cannot be
identified.
4. BIRGing
"Basking in Reflected Glory"
• Feeling good by identifying with others who are successful
• BIRGing in the story is when Shankar joined a group full with
people who have knowledge about rowing and that made
him feeling good being with these kind of people. He joined
them practicing every weekend to sharpen up their
technique.
5. Stereotype
• A stereotype assumes that all members of a group share some
common feature
• Shankar joined the rowing group because he thought that all
the members shared the same ambition like him. He does not
notice that one member, named Herbert does not take the
rowing competition seriously and make them lost the
competition.
6. The Primacy effect
• The first piece of information we receive will have the most
impact on our impression
• The primacy effect occurs when Herbert accidentally saw
their opponents weakness and they’re weak, this first piece of
information leave a huge impact on him and his team when
he told the information he gets to all his team mates.
7. The Frustration-Aggression Hypothesis
• Frustration occurs when something prevents us from enjoying
an expected reward
• Aggression is usually directed at the cause of the interference
• This concept is used in the last of the story when they all upset
and blaming Herbert for their lost.
