    Chapters 1-5
Chapter 1
• Lockwood introduces himself & Heathcliffe.
  Similar characters-both reserved, yet very
  different, refined v. blunt & passionate
• Cheerless inhospitable atmosphere at Wuthering
  Heights, “atmospheric tumult”, “surly owner”,
  Joseph.
• Air of mystery surrounding Heathcliffe, “a dark
  skinned gypsy” yet dressed like a “gentleman”
Chapter 2
• Lockwood re visits Heathcliffe, his landlord
• Meets Catherine (Heathcliffe’s daughter in law)
  and Haerton (son of Hindley, the previous owner
  of W.H). Both dislike Heathcliffe
• Catherine-beautiful looking, but rude.
• Haerton, a mystery, “his dress & speech were
  both rude”, yet seemed “haughty”
• Violent atmosphere-rough speech, dogs attack
Chapter 3
• Catherine’s names on window ledge
• Account of Catherine & H/cliffe’s mistreatment
  as children by Hindley & Joseph, written in Bible
• Lockwood’s dream - violent religious imagery
• Lockwood’s nightmare - Catherine’s tortured
  spirit begging admittance, he pulls her wrist, she
  cuts it - blood imagery
• Heathcliffe’s grief at hearing about the dream
Chapter 4
• Nelly Dean narrating
• Heathcliffe found on streets by Catherine’s
  father, brought to Wuthering Heights
• Hindley hated him,”imp of satan”,
  Catherine loved him. He “bred bad feeling”
• For the rest of the story, Heathcliffe is
  connected with darkness & the devil.
• Heathcliffe suffers bad treatment quietly,
  but is only waiting for a chance of
  revenge.
