Voccational scenario finished
1. Vocational scenario
In this presentation, i will be doing research into how television and films
target audiences react to the use of test screenings, focus groups,
questionnaires, collecting user data and BARB.
2. BARB
BARB (Broadcasters’ audience research board) is an organization that collects the audience
measurement and television ratings in the UK.
In every panel household, all television viewing is monitored automatically by special
metering equipment installed by Kantar Media. During the process they also get data of
recorded programs that are watched within seven days of the original broadcast; this is
referred to as time shift viewing.
BARB is useful to TV production companies and schedules because its really helpful to know
how many people watch the shows put up on TV. This helps the channel to know what
programmes are doing well and which ones aren't.
3. Here’s the first 10 of the top 30
programmes from this date, you can
see that the numbers are relatively
high. Almost in the 20 millions.
Now here’s the viewing from recent research.
You can see, for example, Coronation street
has gone down roughly 10 million viewers.
This is quite an insane change, I think this is
the case because now a days there is such
thing as BBC iPlayer, this allows people to
watch a show that they’ve missed.
4. Test screening
Every film ever made uses test screening. After the editing process of a film is done they test screen the movie
to make sure everything is done properly before its put up on air. People at the test screening can suggest
ideas on how something could be changed or something that can be edited a certain way ETC. When the test
screening is done the audience are then given a questionnaire to give feedback on how they thought the film
went.
Focus group screening is based on films that use a target audience, e.g 16- 50. They then take action in getting
people of the public to come in and watch the film before its released. Survey questions are then given to the
target audience for feedback on how they thought the film went. Filmed interviews were done for proof.
Private screening is provided for investors, marketing, distribution representative, and VIP media figures.
5. Focus groups
A focus group is a form of qualitative research in which a group of
people are asked about their opinions, beliefs, and attitudes
towards a product, concept, service, advertisement, idea, or
packaging. Questions are asked in where participants are free to
talk with other group members.
6. Questionnaires
A questionnaire is another form of research consisting of a chain of questions and
other prompts for the purpose of gathering information from defendants. They are
often designed for statistical analysis of the responses, this is not always the case.
7. Collecting user data (Set top box)
A Set top box is an information appliance device that usually contains a
television tuner, this device connects to a television set as an external
source of signal, turning the source signal into content in a form that can
then be displayed on the television screen or other display device.
You can collect user data from this because you can collect information
about how many people watch a certain TV show or film. Storage database
is kept on the set top box, Data is kept either in raw form, aggregated form
or as statistics .
