1. Review of the Documentary
Introduction:
Our task for this Project was to produce a short documentary about The Lewis Chessmen in
conjunction with the British Museum and Chocolate Films. The target audience for your documentary
is people who are visiting the museum and who might want extra information about the chessmen
because so we can ask questions about their opinion on the Lewis Chessmen.
Evaluate the research process:
The Research we conducted in the Documentary Conventions is Voiceovers, Interviews and a
Montage. In order to understand how make a successful documentary we watchedThe Apology Line,
Pong and the Archive.
Firstly, we used an interviewer becauseit allows people being filmed to speak directly about events,
prompted by the questions asked by the filmmaker.
Secondly, we used a Voiceover because in our documentary there was a commentary by the
filmmaker, spoken while the camera is filming or added to the soundtrack during the production.
Thirdly, we used a montage because it allowed us to sequence our conveys ideas visually by putting
them in a specific order in our short documentary
Evaluate the pre-production process:
I undertook various preproduction tasks to help with making the documentary by using storyboard
so we can have an idea how we were going to layout our short documentary. In class we also
learned about how we were going to ask the interviewer questions about the Lewis chessmen and a
bit more information about the Lewis Chessmen.
Evaluate how effective your research and planning was:
The things that went well were was the research because we used a lot of information of the Lewis
Chessmen and we planned it out how we were going to research this source. These were effective
because we planned out how we were going to use this information and how we were going to
make the short documentary.
In the research and planning I could have improved by using a lot of information about the Lewis
Chessmen and be more creative about how we will plan it out.
Evaluate the production process:
The strengths and Weaknesses of producing your footagewere very good because we took footage
out the museum, inside the museum and footage of the Lewis Chessmen.
The different footage we collected was a long shot of the Lewis Chessmen; close up of the Lewis
Chessmen, midshot of the interviewer and also a midshot public talking about the Lewis Chessmen.
2. Review of the Documentary
What went well on the actual production was that we organized our footage into bins so we can
notice what footage was in each folder. Also we showed that we can be in a Team because we
showed what qualities we have and we showed what we can do as Team.
What didn’t go well was that we lacked time management because we never met the deadline. Also
we never prepared our planning and we wasn’t organized between ourselves
What went well on the particular shots, angles, lightening, sound and interviews was that we took
great footage outside the British Museum, Inside the British museum like the Galleries and the
Exhibition. Likewise our interviews were brilliant because we worked as a team and worked out
what was good about it.
What didn’t go well was that we never took a lot of footage and that we never focused on what we
were really doing. Also we discovered what footage wasn’t good and we never communicated well
when we were discussing about the taking footage of the Lewis chessmen and the British Museum.
Evaluate the post-production process:
The editing Process was very effective because we learned how to use Final cut pro and Chocolate
films helped us on our edit skills.
What went well in the editing process was that we worked in a team and helped each other.
Also our technical abilities were good and that we understand what we were doing. What didn’t go
well with the editing process was that we lacked time management because we never got our
documentary on time.
We have you used found images effectively because it helped us show images of the Lewis
chessmen and were it was originally found.
We created the music by using software called Garageband which allows users to create music or
podcasts. This was very effectively because we wanted music in the background and we wanted the
documentary to be good by adding a good music with it.
