he Museum of the Cultures of Vietnam’s
Ethnic Group (MCVE) is located in the
center of Thái Nguyên City, about 80km
north of Hà N i on National Highway 3.ộ
MCVE was built in 1960. At first, it was
named Vi t B c Museum, with it functionsệ ắ
and tasks of scientific research and
educating the traditions of culture and
revolutionary struggle history of ethnic
groups in Vi t B c.ệ ắ
With the concern from the Party and
Government, specifically from Ministry of
Culture, Sports and Tourism, MCVE has
developed day by day. During the past 50
years, the Museum has conducted hundreds
of researches and collections all over the
country, acquiring nearly 30,000 valuable
objects. These were important for the
Museum to prepare the permanent and
open-air exhibitions to serve the domestic
and international visitors.
MCVE is well known for its architecture,
which won the H Chí Minh Prize, situatedồ
on an area of 40,000 m2

The exhibition system of Museum of the
Cultures of Vietnam’s Ethnic Groups was
built based on the ethnic language groups
in combination with regional cultures,
introducing the cultural identities of 54
ethnic groups associated with ecological
landscapes of every area, including 5

people here mainly live on wet rice
cultivation and fishing. In spiritual life,
they worship their ancestors. Their
traditional handicrafts develop at high
level.
In an area of 250m2
, this gallery
introduces the common and particular
cultural elements of the four ethnic
groups according to three areas: plain,
valley and mountain.

n this gallery, cultures of ethnic
groups of Tày - Thái language group
are exhibited and introduced.
This language group includes Tày,
Thái, Nùng, Giáy, Lào, L , Sánự
Chay, B Y. Most of the peopleố
mainly live in stilted houses,
cultivate rice fields on valleys and
along the rivers or streams, which
irrigated by canals, bamboo troughs
and water wheels.
Handicrafts such as weaving and
forging are fairly developed with
beautiful and sophisticated products.
Also they have a rich spiritual life
with many attractive Xòe dances as
well as Then songs.

The people are good at cultivation on
burnt – over land and terrace fields.
Periodic market is an activity which
clearly shows the cultural characters of
mountainous area including gastronomy,
attire, embroidery, printing patterns on
fabric, performing music and pan – pipe
dancing.

The people are in scattered places in the
North – East, Central – Central
Highlands and South Vietnam. They live
mainly on cultivating on burnt – over
land by making holes for the seeds with a
digging stick.
Architectures of communal house and
long house on the Central Highlands and
pagoda of the Khmer people; weaving
handicraft and community cultural
festivals and unique cultural features of
the Môn – Khmer people.

Ethnic groups of Malayo – Polynesian
language group inhabit mainly on the
red-soil Central Highlands and coastal
stretches of land in Central Vietnam; the
Austronesia culture . Ethnic groups of
Chinese language group inhabit in the
North, Central and South Vietnam;
Chinese culture has the patriarchy
characteristics.

11. 6. Open-air Exhibition

pen-air exhibition s of the Museum of the
Cultures of Vietnam’s Ethnic group were opened to
public in May, 2010. This open space, where folk
cultural activities are held, is used to support
permanent exhibitions.
On an area of approximately 36.000 m2
, open-air
exhibitions express identities of ethnic groups living
in different regions of Vietnam including Northern
Mountainous Region , Northern Valley, Northern
Midland and Plain, Coastal region, the central
Highland and Mekong Delta Region.
