When an individual is expelled from a country, the act is known as removal. The term is primarily used
to describe the removal of foreign aliens. Removal is a process that is complex and time-consuming.
In the United States, the Department of Homeland Security is responsible for issuing a Notice to
Appear, the first step in the removal process. The notice will list the individual’s nationality, any
relevant criminal activity, obligations and rights. The individual is then required to appear in court
before a specialized judge, and consequences apply if they do not attend. If the person is ordered to
leave the country by the judge, they may then apply for relief, if eligible. Relief from removal comes in
many different forms, and the conditions of the relief will vary according to the individual’s situation
and residency status. Should relief from removal be granted, it is commonly granted in the form of
asylum, status adjustment, or cancellation of removal.
