HOLY SPIRIT LESSON 4
I don't care how widely traveled you are, I know you have never sailed
among the Island of Langerhans, or drifted lazily down the Aqueduct of
Sylvius. Nor have any of you everstrolled along the banks of Hunter's Canal,
or watchedthe sun go down behind McBurney's Point. None of you have
ever ridden through the Tunnel of Carti, nor have you ever climbed the
Pyramids of Malpighi. I can say this with confidence, not because I know
where all of you have ever been, nor because allof these places are fictions
and unreal. On the contrary, they are more abundantly real than most of the
places you have ever been. But I can saythis because allof these places are
parts of our body.
The Islands of Langerhans are small masses oftissues in our pancreas. The
Aqueduct of Sylvius is part of the brain. Hunter's Canal is in the thigh.
McBurney's Point is a spoton the right side which is tender to the touch in
acute appendicitis. The Tunnel of Carti is in the inner ear. The Pyramids of
Malpighi is in the kidneys.
The point of this little anatomy lessonis that there is a greatdeal about our
bodies that we do not know. We live in them, but we know more about the
house our body lives in than we know about our bodies, which is the house of
our spirit. Sophocles said, "Numberless are the world's wonders, but none
more wondrous than the body of man." We live in this wondrous temple 24
hours a day, and 365 days a year. We never leave this house in which we
dwell until we die, for to be absent from the body is to be present with the
Lord.
I CORINTHIANS6:19-20
Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the
Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received
from God? You are not your own; 20you were bought
at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.
Amplified: Do you not know that your body is the
temple (the very sanctuary)of the Holy Spirit Who
lives within you, Whom you have received [as a Gift]
from God? You are not your own,
I. BODY IS TEMPLE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT.
2. YOU ARE NOT YOUR OWN.
3. YOU ARE BOUGHTWITH A PRICE.
4. GLORIFY GOD WITH YOUR BODY.
Somr of you may remember my study on I coras the worst church in the New
Testament. It was notorious for so many sins of controversyover leadership,
tolerant of sins in the people, the sin of suing one another and here he deals
with the sin of immorality because it was a common practice of having sex
with prostitues. Not an issue in any of the churches that I served, but the fact
is I never askedif it was an issue.
SPURGEON, "You will notice that in this chapter the
apostlePaul has been dealingwith sins of the flesh,
with fornicationand adultery. Now, it is at all times
exceedingly difficultfor the preacher either to speak
or to write upon this subject; it demands the strictest
care to keep the language guarded, so that while we
are denouncinga detestableevil we do not ourselves
promote it by a single expressionthat shouldbe
otherwisethan chaste and pure.
Possession."Your body is a temple of the Holy
Ghost."The context requires that we give to this a
strictly individualapplication. It is spoken here, not of
the Church as the Body of Christ, "the fulness of him
that fillethall in all,"but of the physical personalityof
each individualmember of that body.
The idea of the old temple was not that of the modern
church, which is a buildingin which men may gather
to worshipGod. The old temple was a shrinefor Deity
to dwell in; and this Divinepresence in the central
shrine was conceivedas hallowingthe entire temple
buildings, right through to the outer courts and gates.
Nothing might enter the precincts that defiled or
worked abomination. Illustratefrom Solomon's
temple, and the extreme jealousywith which the Jews
regarded the sacredplace.
1 COR. 3:16 Do you not know that you are a temple of
God and that the Spiritof God dwells in you?
2 COR 6:16 Or what agreementhas the temple of God
with idols? For we are the temple of the living God; just
as God said,
“I will dwell in them and walk among them;
And I will be their God, and they shall be My people.
EPH. 2:21 in whom the whole building, being fitted
together,is growing into a holy temple in the Lord,
22 in whom you also are being built together into a
dwelling of God in the Spirit.
Amplified:In Him the whole structure is joined (bound,
welded) together harmoniously, and it continues to rise
(grow, increase)into a holy temple in the Lord [a
sanctuary dedicated, consecrated, and sacred to the
presence of the Lord]. (Amplified Bible - Lockman)
Ezek 36.27:"And I will put my Spirit within you."
Ezek 37.14:" And I shall put my Spirit in you, and you shall live."
In the New Testamentthe doctrine opens upon our view with increasing
powerand brightness. Our Lord's own words are familiar.
John 14.16, 17:"And I will ask the Father, and he shall give you another
Comforter, that he may abide with you forever; even the Spirit of truth;
whom the world cannot receive, because itsees him not, neither knows him:
but you know him, for he dwells with you, and shall be in you."
Ro 8.9: "But you are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit
of God dwells in you."
Ro 8:11: "But if the Spirit of him that raisedup Jesus from the dead dwell in
you," etc.
God is most clearly manifested in humanity. Christ, pre-
eminently, was the glorious temple in which God dwelt, and
through whom the Divine glory was revealed to the world.
There was the holy of holies; there the altar which made
every other altar fire grow pale and expire.
2. The temple was very magnificent (1 Kings 6:32). So the soul of a believer is
an illustrious temple. God Himself brings His glory into it (Psalms 45:13).
Christ never admired the goodly stones of the visible, but admired the glory of
the spiritual temple.
1 Kings 6:32 New International Version (NIV)
32 And on the two olive-wooddoors he carved cherubim, palm trees and open
flowers, and overlaid the cherubim and palm trees with hammered gold.
3. The temple was a place setapart for God’s peculiar worship; it was
separatedfrom all other places. So a believer’s heart is consecratedground,
and setapart for God’s service.
4. The temple was a place of God’s specialpresence:He did there command
His blessings. So in a spiritual heart Godwonderfully manifests His presence:
there He gives forth the influences of His grace, the communications of His
love.
5.
6. The temple had a fire burning on the altar; so a believer’s heart is the altar
on which there is a sacredfire still burning
7. The temple, being an hallowed place, was to be kept clean
II. This Divine temple of the soul differs from other temples, and hath a
transcendentexcellencyabove them.
1. Other material temples, though of a beautiful structure, yet have no life in
them; but a believer is a living
1 Peter2:5 you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to
be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrificesacceptable to God through
Jesus Christ.
We are the new spiritual house, the spiritual house of
God not a physical building.
Paul writes in Eph 2:19-22 - Consequently, you are no
longer foreigners and aliens, w but fellow citizens x with
God’s people and members of God’s household, y Eph 2:20
built z on the foundation a of the apostles and prophets, b
with Christ Jesus himself c as the chief cornerstone. d Eph
2:21 In him the whole building is joined together and rises to
become a holy temple e in the Lord. Eph 2:22 And in him
you too are being built together to become a dwelling in
which God lives by his Spirit.
If God meant simply to convey the idea that the Spirit lives
within the believer, He could well have used words such as
“home,” “house,” or “residence.” But by choosing the word
“temple” to describe the Spirit’s dwelling, He conveys the
idea that our bodies are the shrine, or the sacred place, in
which the Spirit not only lives, but is worshiped, revered,
and honored. Therefore, how we behave, think and speak,
and what we let into the temple through our eyes and ears
becomes critically important as well, for every thought, word
and deed is in His view. Even though He will never leave us,
it is entirely possible to grieve the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 4:
30). Instructing the Ephesians to not grieve the Spirit, Paul
told them to “get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger,
brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be
kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each
other, just as in Christ God forgave you” (Ephesians 4:31-
32). When we live by the Spirit, we will no longer gratify the
desires of the sinful nature (Galatians 5:16).
Quotes
Ravi Zacharias “We are his temple. We do not turn in a
certain directlon to pray. We are not bound by having to go
into a building so that we can commune with God. There are
no unique postures and times and limitations that restrict
our access to God. My relationship with God is intimate and
personal. The Christian does not go to the temple to
worship. The Christian takes the temple with him or her.
Jesus lifts us beyond the building and pays the human body
the highest compliment by making it His dwelling place, the
place where He meets with us.
Factually, the Temple Mount is the precise location of the
Temple. It's the holiest place in the world for Jews. It's the
third holiest place for Muslims.
Solomon's temple also was designed to increase the
attractiveness of the city of his residence.
- Julius Wellhausen
The Lord showed me, so that I did see clearly,
that he did not dwell in these temples which men had
commanded and set up,
but in people's hearts...
his people were his temple, and he dwelt in them.
- George Fox
Jesus predicted the same thing: “the hour comes, when you
shall neither in this mountain, nor at Jerusalem, worship the
Father……. But the hour comes, and now is, when the true
worshipers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth:
for the Father seeks such to worship him.
So the only temple valid in the eyes of God is yourself:
You also, as living stones, are built up into a spiritual
temple, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices,
acceptable to God by Jesus Christ. (1 Peter 2:6)
So stop fantasizing about a piece of real estate somewhere in
the Middle East and start worshipping YHWH in His true
nature: spiritually.
Psalm 27:4
One thing I have asked from the LORD, that I shall seek:
That I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of
my life, To behold the beauty of the LORD And to meditate
in His temple.
MIKE BICKLE, "It was only in seeing the beauty of God
that David could see his beauty in God. Did you know that in
redemption you possess a beauty that’s staggering? You
possess a beauty even in your creation. The fact that you’re a
human being already separates you from all the rest of the
created order. A token of your beauty is seen in your natural
humanity, but a greater fullness of your beauty is seen in
your redemption. In seeing the beauty of God, David could
see his own beauty more clearly. Beloved, when you see
God’s beauty and then you see your beauty in God, it
changes your emotional chemistry. It changes the way that
you think and feel about everything. A man or woman who
sees God’s beauty and his or her own beauty in God feels
differently about everything. It changes you. You feel
powerful when you feel beautiful. You feel powerful before
sin when you feel beautiful before God. Redemption has
beautified the people of God.
It says in Isaiah 61.3, one of the well-known statements of
redemption, “God has given you beauty for ashes” (Isa. 61:3,
paraphrased). In place of the ash heap of broken humanity
God has given you beauty, but more than that He has given
you His beauty for ashes. The very beauty of God has been
imparted to you. Moses was to pray in Psalm 90:17, “Let the
beauty of the Lord our God be upon us” (Ps. 90:17, NKJV).
That’s what took place in Jesus Christ. It’s not just beauty
for ashes; it’s God’s beauty that has been given to you. It’s
fantastic! Moses understood that a little; David understood
that a little. God beautifies everything He touches
redemptively. Whenever God touches something
redemptively, He beautifies it with His own beauty. God
beautifies His people with salvation (Ps. 149:4). He makes
you beautiful. He adorns and makes beautiful a bride for His
Son (Rev. 21:2). God the Father makes beautiful the people
of God for Jesus in the grace of God
No Christian needs to lack self-esteem, for they are beautiful
in the eyes of God. He does not dwell in any shack but only
in temples.
The Temple's Interior
5He paneled the main room with cypress, which he overlaid
with fine gold and decorated with palm tree and chain
designs. 6He adorned the temple with precious stones for
beauty, and its gold was from Parvaim. 7He overlaid its
beams, thresholds, walls, and doors with gold, and he carved
cherubim on the walls.…
Berean Study Bible
PIPER, "Christian joy is a good feeling in the soul, produced
by the Holy Spirit, as he causes us to see the beauty of Christ
in the word and in the world.
the Holy Spirit opens the eyes of my heart to see the beauty
of Christ. When I see Christ in all that he is doing, and all
that he is, then my heart is drawn out in joy towards him.
It is not just in the word that we see Christ. We see him in
his gifts and in people. We see him in his gifts of nature. We
see him in his gifts of food and in all of the good things that
our Father in heaven gives to us. Every gift of Christ to us is
intended to be a communication of something of himself. So
we see Christ not only — we taste Christ not only — in his
word, but also in his works.
A temple speaks of beauty.
A temple speaks of purity.
A temple speaks of separation.
A temple speaks of godliness.
A temple speaks of peace.
A temple speaks of revelation.
A temple speaks of truth.
A temple speaks of reverence.
SOLOMON DEDICATESTHE TEMPLE IN I KINGS 8 AND II CHRON. 6-
7
Dr. Jack L. Arnold
Corinth was a city given over to the worship of sex. A thousand prostitutes,
male and female, came down from the Temple of Aphrodite into the city at
night to carry out their wickedtrade. An intimate part of the Corinthian
paganworship was involvement in sexualpromiscuity.
Sexual immorality was acceptedand highly regardedin that culture.
Apparently there were some Christians who had not shakenall of their pagan
past and were highly influenced by their sex-crazedculture. Therefore, there
were some in the Corinthian church who argued that sexualimmorality was
right and proper for Christians. The problem of the church at Corinth is
really the same problem the church in America faces-whatto do with
degenerating attitudes about sexand the ever increasing sexuallaxity within
the church. The American sex-saturatedsocietyis having a tremendous
impact upon the church. In the Christian churches, there are many who say
we need to softenour view of sexualimmorality and even homosexuality and
allow them to be practicedby Christians without recrimination.
READ I COR. 6:"15-20
Deuteronomy 23:17-18
"None of the daughters of Israelshall be a cult prostitute, nor shall any of the
sons of Israelbe a cult prostitute. "You shall not bring the hire of a harlot or
the wagesofa dog into the house of the LORD your God for any votive
offering, for both of these are an abomination to the LORD your God. There
are 48 verses in the Bible that deal with prostitutes. It was popular in all the
ancient world and today it is in our country one of the biggestmoney makers
there is. Christians today need the teaching of Paul just as much as they did in
his day.
Barclay- because God's Spirit dwells in us we have become a temple of God;
and so our very bodies are sacred. And more--Christ died to save not a bit of a
man, but the whole man, body and soul. Christ gave his life to give a man a
redeemedsoul and a pure body. Becauseofthat a man's body is not his own to
do with as he likes;it is Christ's and he must use it, not for the satisfactionof
his ownlusts, but for the glory of Christ. (1 Corinthians - Daily Study Bible)
Spurgeon- “Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost?”
Does this not make a man outstanding? Have you never stoodin awe of your
own self? Have you thought enoughabout how this poor body is sanctified,
dedicated, and elevatedinto a sacredcondition by being set apart as a temple
of the Holy Ghost?… GodHimself then dwells in you. The Spirit of Him who
raisedChrist from the dead is in you. You life is hidden with Christ in God
and the Spirit seals you, anoints you, and abides in you. By the Spirit, we have
access to the Father. By the Spirit, we perceive our adoption and learn to cry,
“Abba, Father.” By the Spirit, we are made partakers of the divine nature
and have communion with the threefold, holy Lord.
WHOLE TRINITY
And so Jesus’promise in John 14 that the Holy Spirit would reside within
them was not limited to the elevenapostles who were present that night. In
fact the Holy Spirit indwells every Christian. In John 14:17 Jesus promised
that "the Spirit of truth… abides with you and will be in you." In John 14:23,
Jesus said"If anyone loves Me, he will keepMy word; and My Father will
love him, and We will come to him, and make Our abode with him."
This changes your whole conceptof prayer. God is not just in heaven, He is
right here in us and we canbe praying without ceasing if we begin to grasp it.
We canbe talking to God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit as we walk through life.
He is presentlike a companion and we can be asking his advice and guidance
every step we take, and for every decisionwe must make. Prayer is just
talking to the one who is walking along with you.
Galatians 5:16, ”This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the
lust of the flesh.”
Today I’m walking,
with The Holy Spirit
today the road
we are both going to hit.
I’ll be trusting Him,
for the right directions
I’ll followHis lead
without any objections.
We’ll travel together,
without Him I won’t go
for the righteous way
I know He knows.
I’ll be lookingfor Him,
to steer my desires
into all that God’s will
asks and requires.
Today I’m walking,
with the Holy Spirit
to whatever He says
I’m going to commit!
Harry Ironside - He says, "Your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost." Do we
think as much of this as we should? Would you allow many things about
which you are carelessif that were constantlybefore your mind? You think of
a church building as a sanctuary setapart for the work of the Lord. You step
in from the outside, and immediately your hat comes off, for you realize that
you are in the sanctuary. We teachour boys and girls not to be boisterous or
frivolous in the church building for it is the house where we meet with God,
and we realize that reverent behavior should characterize us. But think of
this, your body is the sanctuary, it is temple in which the Holy Spirit dwells.
How careful you and I ought to be that we grieve not that blessedOne who
dwells within, that we do not bring dishonor upon the name of the Savior who
has sentHis Spirit to live in our body. Say the words over and overagain to
yourself until they getsuch a grip on you that you will never forgetthem: "My
body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. God dwells in me." It will give you to
realize the dignity of the body and the responsibility that attaches to it.
(Ironside's Notes on1Cor 6)
As D L Moodyrightly said - "I think it is clearlytaught in the Scripture that
every believer has the Holy Ghost dwelling in him. He may be quenching the
Spirit of God, and he may not glorify God as he should, but if he is a believer
on the Lord Jesus Christ, the Holy Ghost dwells in him. But I want to call
your attention to another fact. I believe today, that though Christian men and
women have the Holy Spirit dwelling in them, yet He is not dwelling within
them in power; in other words, God has a greatmany sons and daughters
without power."
But to enable us to live this life we need the daily help of the Holy Spirit. He
entered our hearts at the moment of regeneration, and has been with us ever
since. We may not have realized His entry, but we believe it because ofthe
assurance of1Co 6:19; Ro 8:9-note; Ep 3:16-note. For my part, I like to begin
every day, before lifting my head from the pillow, by saying, "Thou art
within, O Spirit of Christ, though I feelThee not."
SPURGEON, "You will notice the text says, "Ye were
bought with a price." It is a common classical
expressionto signify that the purchasewas expensive.
Of course, the very expression, "Ye were bought,"
implies a price, but the words "with a price" are
added, as if to show that it was not for nothing that ye
were purchased. There was a something inestimably
precious paid for you; and ye need scarcely that I
remind you that "ye were not redeemed with
corruptiblethings, as silverand gold;" "but with the
precious bloodof Christ, as of a lamb without blemish
and without spot."
Remember, too, that this fact is the most important
one in all your history. That you were redeemed "with
a price" is the greatest event in your biography. Even
your birth, what was it unless a second birth had been
yours!
If it be the most importantthing in the world to you,
that you were "bought with a price," let it exercise the
most prominentinfluence over your entire career.
III. And now I must close, and oh, may God give
power to his word while I beg to speak upon the last
point, namely, THE NATURAL CONCLUSION:
"Therefore glorify God in your body, and in your
spirit."I am not clear that the lastfew words are in
the original. A large number of the old manuscripts
and versions, and some of the more importantof them,
finishthe verse at the word "body" -- "Therefore
glorify God in your body." It was the body the apostle
was speakingabout, and not the spirit, and there is no
necessityfor the last words: still we will not further
raisethe question, but take them as being the inspired
word of God: but still. I must make the remark, that
accordingto the connectionthe force of the apostle's
language falls upon the body; and perhaps it is so,
because we are so apt to forget the truth, that the body
is redeemed and is the Lord's, and should be made to
glorify God.
The Christianman's body shouldglorify God by its
chastity. Pure as the lily shouldwe be from every taint
of uncleanness. The body shouldglorify God by
temperance also;in all things, in eating drinking,
sleeping in everything that has to do with the flesh.
"Whetherye eat or drink, or whatsoeverye do, do all
to the glory of God," or as the apostleputs it
elsewhere, "whatsoeverye do in word or deed, do all
in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God
and the Father by him." The Christianman can make
every meal a sacrament, and his ordinary avocations
the exercise of his spiritual priesthood. The body
ought to glorify God by its industry. A lazy servantis a
bad Christian. A working man who is always looking
for Saturday night, a man who never spends a drop of
sweat except when the master is lookingon, does not
glorify God in his body. The best Christianis the man
who is not afraid of hard work when it is due, who
works not as an eye-servantor man pleaser, but in
singleness of heart seeks to glorify God. Our bodies
used to work hard enough for the devil;now they
belong to God we will make them work for him. Your
legs used to carry you to the theater; be not too lazy to
come out on a Thursdaynight to the houseof God.
Your eyes have been often open upon iniquity, keep
them open during the sermon: do not drop asleep!
Your ears have been sharp enough to catch the word
of a lascivious song let them be quick to observethe
word of God. Those hands have often squandered
your earnings in sinfulness, let them give freely to the
cause of Christ. Your body was a willing horse when it
was in the serviceof the devil, let it not be a sluggish
hack now that it draws the chariotof Christ. Make the
tongue speak his praises, make the mouth sing of his
glory, make the whole man bow in willing
subservienceto the will of him who bought it.
2. YOU ARE NOT YOUR OWN.
2 Corinthians5:15 and He died for all, so that they
who live might no longer live for themselves, but for
Him who died and rose againon their behalf.
Romans 14:8 for if we live, we live for the Lord, or if
we die, we die for the Lord; therefore whether we live
or die, we are the Lord’s.
Titus 2:14 who gave Himself for us to redeem us from
every lawless deed, and to purify for Himself a people
for His own possession, zealous for good deeds.
The fact that our bodies "are not our own" means we
cannot do with them whatever enters our mind. That's
the way we used to act when we were non-believers
but now we need to allowGod to renew our minds in
this area
All to Thee is yielded,
I am not my own;
Blissful,glad surrender,
I am Thine alone.
John Piper - The ultimatequestion is not who you are
but whose you are.
"Not my own, but saved by Jesus,
Who redeemed me by His blood,
Gladly I accept the message,
I belong to Christ the Lord.
"Not my own, to Christmy Saviour
I believingtrust my soul,
Everything to Him committed,
Whileeternal ages roll.
"Not my own, my time, my talents.
Freely all to ChristI bring,
To be used in joyful service
For the glory of my King.
"Not my own, the Lord accepts me,
One among the ransomedthrong
Who in heaven shall see His glory,
And to Jesus Christbelong."
God gave me a life in this body of mine
To have and to use for a specifiedtime;
So I must be careful of life, for you see
My body does not belong to me. --Anon.
Whatdo I owe? Nay, Lord—what do I not?
All that I am, all that I've got;
All that I am, and that how small a thing,
Comparedwith all Thy goodly fostering!
—J. Oxenham
ALL TO HIM I OWE - We are not our own, we have
been redeemed. But while we sing "Jesus PaidIt All"
let us remember the next line, "All To Him I Owe."
CertainDivinerequirements grow out of our being
bought with a price. Such love demands my soul, my
life, my all. We are to glorify God in body and spirit—
our selves—becausewe belong to Him (I Cor. 6:19,
20). We are to glorify Him in our service:"Ye are
bought with a price; be not ye the servants of men" (I
Cor. 7:23). And Peter tells us that since we have been
redeemed with the precious blood of Christ, we are to
pass the time of our sojourninghere in fear (I Pt. 1:17-
21). Self, service, sojourning—allto Him I owe,
because He paid it all. Whilewe sing about the price
that He paid, we had better check on what God
expects for us, not to repay Him, but as the expression
of our heart's loveto Him who redeemed us. (Day by
Day - Vance Havner)
We were imprisonedby our sin,
Controlledby evil ways;
But then the Saviorset us free
To serve Him all our days. —Sper
To gain true freedom,
give your life to Christ.
Take my life and let it be
Consecrated, Lord, to Thee;
Take my hands and let them move
At the impulse of Thy love.
Take my feet and let them be
Swift and beautiful for Thee;
Take my voiceand let me sing,
Always, only for my King.
Take my lips and let them be
Filledwith messages from Thee;
Take my silverand my gold,
Not a mite would I withhold.
Take my moments and my days,
Let them flow in endless praise;
Take my intellectand use
Every pow’r as Thou shaltchoose.
Take my will and make it Thine,
It shall be no longer mine;
Take my heart, it is Thine own,
It shall be Thy royal throne.
Take my love, my Lord, I pour
At Thy feet its treasurestore;
Take myself and I will be
Ever, only, all for Thee.
All to Thee is yielded,
I am not my own;
Blissful, gladsurrender,
I am Thine alone.
John Piper - If you are a Christian, you are not your own. Christ has bought
you at the price of his own death (cp Titus 2:14-note). You now belong doubly
to God: He made you, and he bought you. That means your life is not your
own. It is God’s. Therefore, the Bible says, “GlorifyGod in your body.” God
made you for this (Isa 43:7). He bought you for this (1Pe 1:18-note, 1Pe 2:24,
25-note, 1Pe 2:21-note). This is the meaning of your life.
"Notmy own, but savedby Jesus,
Who redeemed me by His blood,
Gladly I acceptthe message,
I belong to Christ the Lord.
"Notmy own, to Christ my Saviour
I believing trust my soul,
Everything to Him committed,
While eternal ages roll.
"Notmy own, my time, my talents.
Freelyall to Christ I bring,
To be used in joyful service
For the glory of my King.
"Notmy own, the Lord accepts me,
One among the ransomed throng
Who in heaven shall see His glory,
And to Jesus Christ belong."
It will be wonderful to be His own up there. I would not want to miss it then,
but it is a greaterprivilege to be His own as we walk the streets of this world
than it will be when we walk the streets of gold, for this is the world in which
we have the privilege of glorifying Him in our bodies.
I. THE CHRISTIAN IS NOT HIS OWN. Before
conversionhe may have so thought of himself. The
essence of conversionis a voluntarysurrenderof will
and life to Christ.
One of the most elementary principlesof Christian
thought and life is expressed in these words: "Ye are
not your own." The senseof Divineownershiprather
than self ownershipis the inspirationof all Christian
dignity and strength
3. YOU ARE BOUGHTWITH A PRICE.
II. HE IS A BOUGHT ONE. And he dwells with holy
satisfactionon the "precious blood"which was as it
were his purchasemoney (1 Peter 1:18, 19).
1. Purchase. "Ye were bought with a price." The
apostlerefers to a historicfact of the past, viz. the
personal self surrenderand sacrifice of Jesus, the Son
of God, for the redemption of men. This, with all that
it involvedof obedience, humiliation,and suffering
even unto death, was the "price" that bought us. We
may differ in our abstractideas as to the nature of the
atonement, but this fact is to the Christianmind
indisputable. "The Son of man came to give his life a
ransom for many" (Matthew 20:28);"Christhath
redeemed us from the curse," etc. (Galatians3:13);
"Redeemed with the precious blood of Christ,"etc. (1
Peter 1:19).
"Love so amazing, so Divine,
Demands my soul, my life, my all."
III. HE IS A BOND SLAVE TO CHRIST. Held
indeed by purchase rights, but quite as truly held by
the entire and willing surrender of a thankful love.
Therefore in all the Christianis, in all the Christian
has, and in all the Christiancan be, he is under solemn
obligationto glorify God, who is his Lord. And the
Lord whom he serves, and who holds sole right in him
and his, he is permitted to apprehendand recognize as
his gracious Master, the glorified"Man ChristJesus,"
whose service is perfect freedom and holiestjoy. - R.T.
4. GLORIFY GOD WITH YOUR BODY.
"GlorifyGod therefore in your body." This is
something more than a mere passive, negative
abstinencefrom evil. It is the consecrationof the
powers of our nature to all holy service, the active
expressionof the inner Divinelife in all possibleforms
of well doing. It implies:
1. Consciousspiritualfreedom. Christdelivers us from
all kinds of degrading moral bondage when he thus
redeems us and makes us his own forever. And "where
the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty." Spiritual
freedom lies in willing personal subjectionto him who
is our rightful Lord. Self hood in all its forms and
phases is the slavery, the paralysis, and death of the
soul. Live in and for yourself, as if you were "your
own," and you have a very hard and oppressive
taskmaster. Liveunto the Lord, and you are most
truly and joyouslyfree.
2. The mastery of the spiritual over the fleshly part of
us. The apostlehas in view a special and most
importantaspect of the sanctity of the body. But we
may take this word "body" as symbolizing the whole
form and fashionand habit of the outward life. From
the inner shrine of a spirit that has thus become the
Lord's, the glory will stream forth through all
channels of self revelation. The very outskirts of our
being, the very lowest part of our nature, will be sure
to be lighted up, spiritualized, beautifiedby it. We are
apt to think of the body as being necessarilythe
encumbrance and the foe of the spirit. This is not a
Christianway of thinking. Rather let us regard it as
an instrument that God has wisely constructed,
"fearfullyand wonderfullymade," and through which
the holy energy of the spiritmay serve his purposes
and do him honour. - W.
He says, “for the temple of God is holy, and that is what you are.” The word
“holy” is hagios. We saw that in chapter 1. Holiness does not mean perfection
when it comes to us. When it comes to Him, yes, but not to us. His is inherent.
Ours is imputed. But the word “holy” means we have been set apart, we have
been put into a class all by ourselves. Amongst all humanity, we are in a class
all by ourselves. Why? Becausethe Spirit of God has takenup residence in
our heart. He has separatedus unto Himself and for His purposes, therefore,
we have been made holy. His living in our life is proof of that fact.
Paul says, “and that is what you are.” You are holy because Godis holy and
lives in you and has separatedyou unto Himself and made you holy. We as
believers are the very temple of God. He sent His own Spirit to take up
residence in our life.
2Co 7:1 Since we have these promises, dear friends,
let us purify ourselves from everything that
contaminatesbody and spirit, perfecting holiness out
of reverence for God
Whatright has any man or any woman to deface the
temple of the Holy Ghost? Whatis the ear? Why, it is
the whispering-galleryof the human soul. Whatis the
eye? It is the observatoryGod constructed, its
telescopesweeping the heavens. Whatis the hand? An
instrument so wonderful that when the Earl of
Bridgewater bequeathed in his will £8,000sterling for
treatises to be written on the wisdom, power, and
goodness of God, and Dr. Chalmers found his subject
in the adaptationof external nature to the moral and
intellectualconstitutionof man, and the learnedDr.
Whewell found his subject in astronomy, Sir Charles
Bell, the great English anatomistand surgeon, found
his greatest illustrationof the wisdom, power, and
goodness of God in the constructionof the human
hand, writing his whole book on that subject. So
wonderful are these bodies that God names His own
attributes after different parts of them. His
omniscience — it is God's eye. His omnipresence — it
is God's ear. His omnipotence — it is God's arm. The
upholsteryof the midnight heavens — it is the work of
God's fingers. His life-givingpower — it is the breath
of the Almighty. His dominion — the government shall
be upon His shoulder. A body so Divinelyhonoured
and so Divinelyconstructed, let us be careful not to
abuse it. Whenit becomes a Christianduty to take
care of our health, is not the whole tendency toward
longevity? If I toss my watch about recklessly, and
drop it on the pavement, and wind it up any time of
day or night I happen to think of it, and often let it run
down, while you are careful with your watch, and you
never abuse it, and you wind it up at just the same
hour every night, and then put it away in a place
where it will not suffer from the violentchanges of
atmosphere, which watch will lastthe longer?
Common sense answers. Now, the human body is
God's watch. You see the hands of the watch, you see
the face of the watch; but the beating of the heart is
the ticking of the watch. Oh! be careful and do not let
it run down.
(T. De WittTalmage.)
(1) Glorify God in your bodies, for they are His. Beware ofregarding them as
a number of organs and sensesto be pampered, or as stately forms to be
adorned and admired. The Spirit dwells not in an unhallowed temple. In your
bodies, therefore, glorify God, by temperance, chastity, and the practice of
every Christian virtue; by doing without weariness, and by suffering without
murmuring; by letting your hands be active in the service, and your feet swift
in the way of His Commandments.
(2) Glorify God in your intellects, for they are His. How often has science
poured her treasures before him who knew not God, and how much of the
choicestliterary art is devoted to the service of the devil! In the midst of a
perverse generation, bow yourself in unconditional allegiance to the Bible.
Learn the true humility of knowledge. Standout in all the nobleness of
religious decision:spirits — students of the greatSpirit; minds — drinking in
the lessons ofthe immortal mind, which transforms them while they listen.
(3) Glorify God in your whole nature, for it is His. Nevermind the opposition
with which you may have to contend, nor think that you live to struggle alone.
Your Saviour has sent His Spirit to help you, and that Spirit now workethin
you to will and to do of His goodpleasure.

A. Crummell.
II. HOW AM I TO GLORIFY GOD IN MY BODY? I
claim —
1. Your hands for God. You have no right to use them
in the serviceof Satan, the world, or sin. Idle hands do
not glorify God, nor mischievous hands, nor dirty
hands, nor dishonesthands, nor unkind hands, nor
careless hands.
2. Your feet. They shouldgo only on His errands.
When I see the littlefeet kicking or stamping in
passion,or venturing into forbiddenand dangerous
paths, or loiteringwhen they should make haste, I
cannot help thinking: "These feet are not for God."
"How beautiful are the feet, when they are for God!"
3. Your lips. Whatshall I say of profane words,
untruthful words, coarseand vulgar words, angry and
irritatingwords, unholy and impure words, light and
jesting words, slanderingand gossipingwords? When
we are going to speak of any one, it has been said there
are three questionswhich it is well to ask — "Is it
true? Is it useful? Is it kind?"
4. And so with the whole body. The ears should be for
God, listeningto nothing of which He would
disapprove;and the eyes, turning away from all that
He would not look upon. All shouldbe for God.
"Whetherye eat or drink," &c. And how is all this to
be? The root of all lies in having the heart for God.
Honoring God with Your Body - You’re acquainted with house sitters. Not
wanting to leave your house vacant, you ask someone to stay in your home
until you return. Let me describe two nightmares.
The first house sitter redecoratesyour house, changing white paint to pink,
Berber carpetto shag. His justification? “The house didn’t express me. I
needed a house that communicated who I am.”
Your response? “It’s not yours! My residence doesn’t exist to reflectyou! I
askedyou to take care of the house, not take over the house!”
You might choose him, however, over nightmare number two. She didn’t
redecorate;she neglected. Neverwasheda dish, made a bed, or took out the
trash. “My time here was temporary. I knew you wouldn’t mind.”
Of course you’d mind! Both house sitters made the same mistake: They acted
as if they owned the dwelling. How could they? But how could we? When it
comes to our bodies, the Bible declares that we don’t own them. (Max Lucado)

MY SERMON
George Burns said, "There will always be a battle betweenthe sexes because
men and womenwant different things. Menwant womenand women want
men." This is, of course, whatGod intended, but like all good things that are
carried to excess this too becomes anarea of life where the sinful nature of
man thrives. Sexual immorality is the first fruit of the flesh that Paul refers to,
just as love is the first fruit of the Spirit.
This means that one of the first signs that you are not being led of the
Spirit, but are being led by your sinful nature, is the desire to be sexually
immoral. Since everyone is so tempted at some point in life, this confirms
Paul's point of the conflict betweenthe flesh and the spirit. Now this has a
direct bearing on the work place. The one thing I learned in my years of
secularwork is that sexand work go togetherlike love and worship. On
Sunday we focus on agape love and worship, and then on Monday we enter a
world of work where the focus is on sex. It is no wonder we have a hard time
bridging this gap and trying to relate the one to the other.
In the plants I workedin where a secretarycame out of the office into the
plant, the men would whistle and then have crude discussions aboutanatomy.
You didn't learn anything about love, but you could pick up some ideas about
sex, because that is the theme of the work place. If that was true 30 years ago,
I cannot imagine what it is now. Sexual harassmentlaws have no doubt
curbed some of the sexuality, but there is no way it caneliminate it. In the
place where I workedmen sometimes had pinups by their machines, or in
their lockers, andthe flirting that went on was a major factorin that
environment.
In my counseling over the years I have noted that most of the Christians I
am aware ofwho have had affairs have done so because oftheir relationships
in the work place. Many a Christian marriage has been killed by the work
place morality that exalts sex over love.
Surveys revealthat working wives have twice as many affairs as do non-
working wives. It is not entirely due to a immoral focus on sex. There are
natural factors that add to the danger of the work place. Work and sex are
linked by the fact that they both begin about the same time in life. Young
people are getting their first serious jobs at the same time they are going
through puberty, or when they are at the peak of their sexdrive.
I didn't have to read about this to know it, for I workedwith a gang of
teenagers in a theatre for severalyears, and I know how the theme of sex is
never far awayif it is not dominating the environment. Then there is the
factorthat people who work togetheroften develop a greaterintimacy than
people who get married. People who get married often ceaseto talk, and they
lose a sense ofa growing intimacy. But people who work togetherkeepon
talking and learning about eachother, and sometimes evenabout their mates.
They have more time to talk at work often than mates do at home. The result
is people develop the inevitable feeling of desire, and the work place becomes
a breeding ground for the lust of the flesh. People at work often spend hours
a day in romantic flirting. This is the very thing that mates are to do, but they
don't do because theyare too tired after a day of work and flirting.
The work place is a dangerous place, not just because ofindustrial
accidents, but because ofits predominant emphasis on sex in contrastto love.
If the Christian is going to have any impact in his work for the cause of
Christ, he or she has to somehow bring the love of Sunday back to that
Monday environment, and help people to see that love is not a mere hot house
flowertoo weak to survive in the world of the work place. Christians bring
some of the lust of the work place back to the church, but it is suppressed.
You don't walk in and find men telling off-coloredjokes, and you don't see
them poking one another and saying, "Did you see the legs on that gal in the
first pew." Lust is always latentin our lives, and cansurface
even in a sacredsetting, but we suppress it and say, "Get thee behind me
Satan."
But I wonder if we do not then do the same thing at work in reverse. We
suppress the issue of agape love, and then unconsciouslysay, "Getthee behind
me Lord." Where lust is king it is as embarrassing for us to talk of love as it
is to talk of lust where love is king. So we compartmentalize life, and on
Sunday we worship and love, and on Monday through Friday we work and
lust. It is sort of the best of both worlds. The only problem with this is that it
misses the whole point of Sunday's worship and love. It is meant by God to so
fill us with the love of Christ that we want to go into the world and bring to it
the fruits of the Spirit that men might see there is more to life than the fruit of
the flesh. The work place is our world that Jesus wants us to reach. It is our
mission field where we canplant the kingdom of God.
If we could only see this, we could see that whateverwe do can be our
calling, for it can be a key wayby which God can use us to open the door to
the kingdom for people who may never see the inside of a church. There, you
are on a mission field just as real as the missionaries we send overseas. You
work with these people, and they are just as loved by God, and just as died for
by Christ as anyone who has ever lived. But they are in bondage to the lust of
the flesh, and all the evils that Paul lists here as acts of the sinful nature. We
are fighting againstthese forces constantlysays Paul, and the only way we can
win this conflict is to be led of the spirit, and to produce the fruit of the spirit.
Let's face it, this is a David againstGoliath conflict. Work and sex gets 8
hours a day 5 days a week, and worship and love gets one or two hours a
week. It is not just the kids who face these odds. Many watch dozens of hour
of secularTV for every hour they are in Sunday School. No wonderthey
know more about Hollywood stars
and cartooncharacters thanthey do about biblical characters. But the adults
have the same unfair odds, and they are swamped with secularsex all week,
and then they geta smattering of sacredlove on Sunday. The only hope for
the Christian underdog in this lopsided battle is to do what David did against
Goliath. He came up with a specialweaponthat was superiorto the armor of
Goliath. He took his sling and five smoothstones, and one stone did the job
and the underdog won.
In a very real sense Paulis saying that the fruit of the Spirit is to us what
those stones were to David. And maybe in any particular conflictone of them
also will do the job and give us the victory.
temple of the Holy Spirit
Questionfrom dr. charles lastrapes on 7/22/2001:
I have always been taught that "I am the temple of the Holy Spirit". If this is
the teaching of the church, then why doesn'tthe church teachit's members
about the care of the physical temple (physical body) as well as maintaining
our spiritual health? As a physician and catholic, I was very interested in
reading the results of the Seventh Day Adventist Health Study in a prominent
medical journal. It seems that as a group they are much healthier than the
generalpopulation, living 10 yrs. longer on average, with a much lower
incidence of all the major degenerative diseases thatafflict our population. As
a church they activelyinclude health teaching proven to enhance wellness. I
have found that when an individual is seriouslyill that it's hard for them to
think about much else. Wouldn't it make sense for the church to address all
aspects ofthe individual with the aim of ultimately bringing us closerto God?
I look forward to your comments. Dr. Charles Lastrapes
Answer by Richard Geraghty on 8/2/2001:
DearDr. Charles,
You are quite correctin pointing out the teaching that human beings are the
temples of the Holy Spirit. This places greatemphasis on the body itself. The
dignity of the body is also brought out by the fact that God took on a body
through Mary at the Nativity. Also important in the effort to remember the
dignity of the human body is the fact that the corpse is brought into Church to
be blessedand that it is given a decent Christian buriel. This brings out the
notion that the body is the vehicle of the soul. Further, the fact that at the last
day the body will be reunited to the soul againplaces greatemphasis upon the
dignity of the body. The point is that the more that people pay attention to the
Church, the more they will pay attention to the dignity of the human body.
Dr. Geraghty
As a little boy sat in church, his eyes were drawn to a
large flag mounted on the wall, with a number of gold
stars attachedto it. He whispered to his father,
“Daddy, why does that flag have all those stars on it?”
His dad whispered back, “To remind us of all those
who died in the service.”The boy thought about that
for a moment and then whisperedagain, “Didthey die
in the morning serviceor the evening service?”
WINE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
Question: "When - How do we receive the Holy Spirit?"
Answer: The apostle Paul clearly taught that we receive the Holy Spirit the moment we
receive Jesus Christ as our Savior. First Corinthians 12:13 declares, “For we were all
baptized by one Spirit into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free—and we were
all given the one Spirit to drink.” Romans 8:9 tells us that if a person does not possess the
Holy Spirit, he or she does not belong to Christ: “You, however, are controlled not by the
sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have
the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ.” Ephesians 1:13-14 teaches us that the
Holy Spirit is the seal of salvation for all those who believe: “Having believed, you were
marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our
inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession—to the praise of his
glory.”
These three passages make it clear that the Holy Spirit is received at the moment of
salvation. Paul could not say that we all were baptized by one Spirit and all given one Spirit
to drink if not all of the Corinthian believers possessedthe Holy Spirit. Romans 8:9 is even
stronger, stating that if a person does not have the Spirit, he does not belong to Christ.
Therefore, the possessionof the Spirit is an identifying factor of the possessionof salvation.
Further, the Holy Spirit could not be the “seal of salvation” (Ephesians 1:13-14) if He is not
received at the moment of salvation. Many scriptures make it abundantly clear that our
salvation is secured the moment we receive Christ as Savior.
In conclusion, how do we receive the Holy Spirit? We receive the Holy Spirit by simply
receiving the Lord Jesus Christ as our Savior (John 3:5-16). When do we receive the Holy
Spirit? The Holy Spirit becomes our permanent possessionthe moment we believe.

Ephesians 5:18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads
to debauchery. Instead, be filledwith the Spirit.
Amplified: And do not get drunk with wine, for that is
debauchery; but ever be filled and stimulatedwith the
[Holy] Spirit.
NLT: Don't be drunk with wine, becausethat will ruin
your life. Instead, let the Holy Spirit fill and control
you. (NLT - Tyndale House)
Phillips:Don'tget your stimulus from wine (for there
is always the danger of excessivedrinking), but let the
Spirit stimulateyour souls. (Phillips:Touchstone)
These are two things that we can chooseto do or not to
do, You cannotget drunk without choosingto do so,
and you cannot be filledwith the Spirit without
choosingto be. You can chooseto not get drunk and
also choosenot to be filled with the Spirit. Free will is
involvedin both situations. It is our responsibilityto
chooseone or the other. Paul urges us to not choose
the one but to choosethe other. Neitherof these things
can happen without your choice. Just as you have to
chooseto trust in Jesus as your Savior, so you have to
chooseto be filled with the Spirit. You receive the
Spirit when you trust in Jesus as Savior, but he does
not yet control all your thoughts and actions. It is a
process by which you become filled. It is a choice that
has to be consistent.

LET OR WILL
Light is given to this truth in Philippians 2:5, "Let this mind
be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus." The key word in
this verse is "let." In other words, we are to "allow" the
mind of Christ to come into us. Though this occasion
changes us, it is not the beginning of the mind of Christ. The
only thing new is that His mind has entered into us. That
little word "let" is one of the most important words in the
Bible. God has so much for us if we will "let" Him do what
He wills. Romans 12:1 explains this, "I beseech you
therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present
your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God,
which is your reasonable service." The word "present" or
"yield" carries the same connotation as the word `let.'" God
will do His work in us if we will LET HIM.
I had been preaching for many years. I knew that the Holy
Spirit lived in me. The Bible said so. I even taught the
doctrine, but I had never one time spoken a word to the Holy
Spirit. Though I realized He lived in my body, and knew my
body was His dwelling place, I had never accepted Him as a
person. Yes, He provided; yes, He assured; yes, He
comforted; yes, He strengthened; yes, He taught. Though I
was aware of these marvelous works in my life, I never
accepted Him as a person or received Him as such.
One day I was preaching on a radio broadcast. I was
standing behind the pulpit of my small church in east Texas.
My coat was half off, my collar was unbuttoned, and my tie
was draped around my neck as I was preaching in the early
morning hours to a radio audience from behind the pulpit of
my empty church building. That morning I said to my radio
audience, "The Holy Spirit lives in you. He hears what you
say. He knows what you do. He sees where you go. He knows
how you are dressing this morning." I began to tremble. I
realized for the first time that He saw me and that He was a
person. I finished the broadcast, I fell to my knees, lifted my
voice to God and looked heavenward as I said, "Dear Holy
Spirit, forgive me. I have never spoken to You. Doctrinally I
knew you lived in me, but I have never accepted You as a
person. I have never reckoned that You were part of my life
in a practical way. I accept you today."
My life has changed! I have never been the same! I went out
to my car to drive home for breakfast. I bowed beside the
car and said, "Holy Spirit, lead me to know the route that I
should take as I drive home." I then included Him in every
decision that I had to make. I asked Him to help me when I
went shopping. I asked Him to lead me in every area of my
life. There has not been one day from that day until this
when I have neglected to say a word to the Holy Spirit. To
me He is a person. He not only lives in my body, but I accept
Him as such. I acknowledge His presence. I talk to Him. I
seek His guidance in even the smallest of decisions.
In summary, dear reader, when you accepted Jesus and
asked Him to come into your life, He had with Him another
member of the Godhead. As Jesus entered, this other
member silently entered. Perhaps you did not realize it, or
perhaps you realized it and have never taken time to accept
this other member for what He really is.
JACK HYLES, "
QUIET AND GENTLE SPIRIT
There are three enemies of the Christian: the world, the
flesh and the Devil, but the Holy Breath, or the Holy Spirit is
blowing the other way. When we yield to Him, He quietly, as
a soft wind, controls our lives. Of course, the key word is
YIELD!
It is true that sometimes the Holy Spirit blows like a
tornado, hurricane or a mighty gale, but normally He blows
very quietly and goes about His work of directing the affairs
of our lives in a very quiet, unobstructive manner.
A seed is planted in the ground. It is not seen, but it is doing
its work. There is no fanfare, no noise and nothing visible,
but one day soon a little plant opens the earth and pushes its
way out. This is the way the Holy Spirit works in His normal
ministry. A seed is planted and then one day we begin to
notice its fruit.
A germ enters the body. The germ is not seen and the person
does not immediately have symptoms of an illness or disease.
This does not, however, mean that the germ is not working.
The germ goes about its work in a quiet way, then come the
chills, the headache, the fever, the sore throat, etc. The Holy
Spirit works much the same way in his normal operation.
A prescription is given for medicine to fight the germ. The
medicine is taken. There is no immediate sign that it has
helped, but it does its work as quietly as did the germ. The
medicine fights the infection and then, after some hours or
maybe even days, the patient feels better. Notice that he felt
quite the same when he first took the medicine, but by faith
he took it.
When a person comes to Christ and yields to Him by faith,
he may or may not feel differently. The main thing is: Did he
trust the finished work of the Saviour? The Holy Spirit
quietly enters. If you ask the person if the Holy Spirit is
within him, he may say, "I don't know." (If he does answer
in the affirmative, it is simply because somebody has told
him or he has read it in the Bible and believed it). Then soon
evidences of the Holy Spirit begin to appear. There is a
desire to read the Bible, a desire to pray, a lessening desire
for things of the world. What has happened? The Holy Spirit
was doing His quiet work.
When a couple first hears the news that a baby is coming, it
is exciting and thrilling. However, the wife was expecting
weeks before they found out about it. The evidence and
manifestation came later.
This is not to say that instantaneous, overwhelming
demonstrations of the Holy Spirit never happen. Quite to the
contrast! Some marvelous instantaneous victories have
dotted the ministry of this preacher, but for every one like
that, there have been hundreds of sweet, calm conversions
and decisions whose geniuses has been proven by the fruit
that they bore in subsequent days, weeks and years.
In the same manner of salvation there are often startling,
Saul-of-Tarsus-like conversions, whereas most conversions
are more like Matthew, who simply left all and followed
Jesus. Over a quarter of a century ago as I went soul
winning one night in Garland, Texas, I made two visits. The
first visit was very spectacular. The man received Christ.
When he did, he jumped up, hugged his wife, shouted,
hugged the children, clapped his hands, humped up on the
sofa and had a real spell! My, what a time we had! I left the
place praising God for His wonderful power. I then drove
across town and visited another man. He came to the door. I
told him who I was. He said, "Sit down." But he didn't sit
down! He stood up leaning against the door. (I did not know
until later that he had a bad back). He was as matter of fact
as a person could be. In fact, he was a bit abrupt and nearly
rude at times.
I said, "Sir, do you know if you died tonight you would go to
Heaven?" He replied, "No!" I said, "Would you like to
know?" He replied, "Yes!" I told him the plan of salvation
as best I could and showed him in the Bible the wonderful
story of Christ. Then I asked him, "Do you realize that you
are a sinner?" Abruptly he replied, "Yes!" I asked him, "Do
you know if you died tonight, you would go to hell?"
Without any emotion at all he replied, "Yes!" I then asked,
"Do you realize Jesus Christ came to the earth as a virgin-
born Son of God, lived a perfect life, fulfilled the law, went
to the cross, bore your sins in His body, was buried and rose
again after three days and three nights?" He abruptly said,
"Yes." I then asked, "Do you believe that if you would
receive Him as your Saviour by faith now, that He would
make you His child?" He said, "Yes!" All of this transpired
in the coldest, most unemotional manner that you cam
imagine. I said, "Could we kneel and pray?" He said, "You
kneel. I have a bad back." He leaned against the door. I
prayed. I asked him to pray. He said as coldly as anybody
could ever say in a prayer, "Lord, be merciful to me a sinner
and save my soul. Amen." I felt nothing but doubt, and so I
said, "Sir, were you sincere?" He replied coldly, "Yes." I
asked, "Where would you go if you died now?" Matter-of-
factly he replied, "Heaven." I said, "How do you know?" He
looked at me through stern-looking eyes and said, "The
Bible says it, doesn't it?" I said, "Yes, and if you're sincere,
you got it." I walked away from the house filled with doubt
about his sincerity. The first man who shouted came to
church the next Sunday and was baptized. He lasted about
four weeks. The last man, whom I doubted, has now for 25
years been a faithful, loyal servant of God.
Walvooard, "The present tense clearly indicates a durative idea, and
could be translated, “keep being filled.” The contrast with the state
of intoxication mentioned in the verse is patent. Instead of being
constantly in a state of being drunk with wine, the entire faculties of
the body being subject to its power and influence, the Christian
should be constantly filled with the Spirit. The present imperative is
regularly used in the New Testament to express this durative idea,
and it cannot be doubted that it is of great significance here. Its
major contribution is to bring out clearly the contrast between the
baptism of the Spirit and the filling of the Spirit, the confusion of
which has been the weakness of many studies on the Holy Spirit. A
study of 1 Corinthians 12:13, reveals that the word baptize,
ἐβαπτίσθημεν, is found in the aorist, an action which takes place
once and for all. In contrast to this, there is the continuous ministry
of the Holy Spirit in filling."
The use of the present tense in the command to be filled with the
Spirit makes it evident that this work of the Spirit is a continuous
reality in those who are yielded to God. It is a moment-by-moment
relationship which may be hindered by sin. It is not a question of a
so-called “second work of grace” or any epochal experience. While
the outward evidence of the fullness of the Spirit may vary, the
abiding reality is intended by God to be the normal experience of
His own. It is only as the Christian experiences the present reality of
the fullness of the Spirit that the full-orbed ministry of the Spirit
may be realized."
The Scriptures bear a decisive testimony that the filling of the Holy
Spirit is a repeated experience. The early church was filled with the
Spirit on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:4). In Acts 4:8, Peter is
mentioned as again being filled with the Holy Ghost, and the entire
company gathered at Jerusalem to hear Peter’s report of his
encounter with the Sanhedrin are again filled with the Holy Ghost
(Acts 4:31). Stephen, originally chosen a deacon because he was
filled with the Spirit, is revealed to have been “full of the Holy
Ghost” immediately before his martyrdom (Acts 7:55). Both Paul
and Barnabas are found filled with the Holy Spirit at widely
differing periods of their lives (Acts 9:17; 11:24; 13:9, 52). The
evidence for the experimental nature of the filling of the Holy Spirit
is fully sustained in every instance.
The filling of the Holy Spirit in every respect stands in sharp
contrast to the ministries of regeneration, indwelling, sealing, and
baptism, which are accomplished once and for all at the time of
salvation."
In 1 Thessalonians 5:19, the command is given, “Quench not the Spirit.” In
Ephesians 4:30, another command is found, “And grieve not the holy Spirit of
God, whereby ye are sealedunto the day of redemption.” A third command is
recordedin Galatians 5:16, ”This I saythen, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall
not fulfil the lust of the flesh.” These three Scriptures provide a divinely-
inspired outline of the conditions for the filling of the Holy Spirit. While there
are many aspects to the spiritual life and experience, all will be found to be
related to these simple commands. The importance of these Scriptures as the
key to unlocking the truth of the conditions for the filling of the Holy Spirit
cannot be overemphasized. It is a sad commentary upon much so-called
exhortation that it deals with the externals rather than the primary causes for
defeatand spiritual apathy. As one turns to this important subject, it must be
with a new realization that herein is one of the most important doctrines of
the Scripture.
THE MOST IMPORTANT
VERSE IN THE NEW TESTAMENT!
Well known pastor and author Charles Swindoll made
this statement...
I don’t know of a more important verse in the New
Testament for the Christian than Ephesians 5:18—
honest, no exaggeration.
JOHN WALVOOARD "From the standpoint of practical
value to the individual Christian, no field of doctrine
relating to the Holy Spirit is more vital than the subject of
the filling of the Spirit. It has been greatly neglected in
the average theology, along with other practical
applications of doctrine."
SWINDOLL GOES ON, "This verse tells the believer how
to live an authentic, empowered life: “And do not get
drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with
the Spirit.” It begins with a negative command: “Don’t
get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation” (which
means excess, existing hopelessly out of control). When
you’re drunk with alcohol, you lose control. You also lose
self-respect and the respect of others. “Don’t get drunk.”
A positive commandfollows: “But be filled with the
Spirit.”...This is a command, not a suggestion. It’s an
urgent imperative, not a casual option...“Be filled” is a
command, which means I play a part in it. For example, I
cannot be filled with the Spirit while I have unconfessed
sin within me. I cannot be filled with the Spirit while at
the same time conducting my life in the energy of the
flesh. I cannot be filled with the Spirit while I am resisting
God’s will and relying only on myself. I need to be sure
that I have taken care of the sins that have emerged in
my life, that I have not ignored the wrong that I have
done before God and to others. I need to walk in
conscious dependence on the Lord on a daily basis. Many
a morning I begin my day by sitting on the side of the
bed, saying:
This is your day, Lord. I want to be at Your disposal. I
have no idea what these next twenty-four hours will
contain. But before I sip my first cup of coffee, and even
before I get dressed, I want You to know that from this
moment on throughout this day, I’m Yours, Lord. Help
me to lean on You, to draw strength from You, and to
have You fill my mind and my thoughts. Take control of
my senses so that I am literally filled with Your presence
and empowered with Your energy. I want to be Your
tool, Your vessel today. I can’t make it happen. And so
I’m saying, Lord, fill me with Your Spirit today.
I challenge you to begin every day with a similar prayer.
“Lord, today, enable me to live out the authentic
Christian life for Your glory.” Customize it with your own
details depending on what may be the needs of that
particular day.
JOHN WALVOOARD , "The diversity of spiritual
experience can, therefore, be traced to the two factors of
the fullness of the Spirit and spiritual maturity. Of the
two, the fullness of the Spirit is by far the most important
in spiritual experience. All the ministries of the Spirit may
be known by the immature Christian if he is living in
proper adjustment to the Spirit. The fruit of the Spirit is
intended by God to be produced in any Christian in
whom the Spirit has full sway. The evident fact that many
Christians never know the full-orbed ministry of the Spirit
in their own lives constitutes a challenge to the church
and its ministry to proclaim this important aspect of
truth."
HOLY SPIRIT, infilling
A walk in the Spirit will of necessitybe a walk in
accordancewith the Wordthe Spirit has inspired. The
parallelbetween Eph 5:18-21 and Col 3:15-17is
significant. The same results are said to flow from
being filledwith the Spirit in the first cast, and being
filledwith the Wordin the second. To remain filled
with the Spirit, and thus enjoy His continuing
sanctifyingwork, will mean continuingto be filled
with the Word. The relationshipis obvious.
J.O. Sanders, Enjoying Intimacy with God, Moody, p.
91.
Now in Ephesians 5:18, the illustrationof becoming
drunk indicates a progressiveprocess. Each drink
brings a man closer to drunkenness. Whena man is
drunk, then we say he is full of wine or strong drink.
Likewise, the Spirit progressivelygains control of our
lives so that others notice when we are full of the
Spirit.
4. The meaning of “filled” is control:“… to exercise
restrainingor directing influence over … ” (Webster’s
Dictionary).
It is a command. This is not an optionbut a clear
statement of the will of God for all believers. The
bottom line is that Paul commands us to be spiritually
mature, which is the same as saying, “be filled by the
Spirit.”
Whatdoes it mean to be filledwith the Spirit? It
means to be a mature, ChristlikeChristianwho
exhibits the fruit of the Spirit!
JOHN PIPER
I think being filled with the Spirit means, basically,
having great joy in God. And since the Bible teaches
that “the joy of the Lord is our strength” (Nehemiah
8:10), it also means there will be power in this joy for
overcomingbesetting sins and for boldness in witness.
But, basically, it means radiantjoy, becausethe Spirit
who fills us is the Spirit of joy that flows between God
the Father and God the Son because of the delight they
have in each other. Therefore, to be filled with the
Spirit means to be caught into the joy that flows
among the Holy Trinity and to love God the Father
and God the Son with the very lovewith which they
love each other. “To be filledwith the Spirit means to
be caught into the joy that flows among the Holy
Trinity.”
The contrastwith drunkenness is the key here. What
do people go to alcoholfor? For a happy hour. We all
want to be happy
The fundamental meaning of being filled with the
Spirit is being filled with joy that comes from God and
overflows in song. And Luke would agree with that,
too, becausehe says in Acts 13:52, “The discipleswere
filledwith joy and with the Holy Spirit.”
So I repeat, whatever joy or peace you find in alcohol,
the Spirit of God can give you more. Even the psalmist
of the Old Testament had experienced this. He says in
Psalm4:7– 8:
You [O Lord] have put more joy in my heart than they
have when their grain and wine abound. In peace I
will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O Lord,
make me dwell in safety.
Why do people want to get drunk? They want to feel
happy and alcoholrelieves them of stress and negative
thinking. They can relax and feel a sense of freedom
from all care. It is an escape from reality.Butin their
drunken state they lose control and do stupic things
that hurt and even kill them and others.
Don'tdo that says Paul, but instead face reality which
is filled with joy and all the reasons to sing and rejoice
and be thankful for all the positivesof life that we
have in Christ.
Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery.
Instead, be filled with the Spirit, speakingto one
another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the
Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the
Lord, always giving thanks to God the Fatherfor
everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Psalm95:2
Let us enter His presence with thanksgiving;let us
make a joyful noise to Him in song.
ps 100:2 King James Bible
Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his
presence with singing.
Contemporary English Version
Be joyful and sing as you come in to worship the LORD!
Good News Translation
Worship the LORD with joy; come before him with
happy songs!
Holman Christian Standard Bible
Serve the LORD with gladness; come before Himwith
joyful songs. .
Dr. Dan Hayden "Years ago when our children were
small, I would come home to squeals of excitement—
“Daddy, Daddy!”—and they would come running to
jump into my arms. There was passion in their
response, and I loved it! Now that is what the Psalmist
tells us to do—to come before the Lord with joyful
expressions of how thankful we are for Him."
CONTROL IS A KEY ISSUE.
Here is my final definitionof the fillingof the Spirit: It
is that state in which the Holy Spirit is free to do all
that he came into my life to do. The key word is
“state.” The filling of the Spirit is not primarilyan
emotional experience, and it’s certainlynot reserved
for a few super-Christians.It’s nothing more than the
normal Christianlife when the Holy Spirit is in
control.
Here’s my definitionof the fillingof the Spirit. It’s
what happens when the Holy Spirit has the controlling
interest in your life. Go back to the contrastbetween
wine and the Spirit. Drunkenand Spirit-filledpeople
have one thing in common. They are both controlled
people. Their lives and their behaviorare radically
changed by that which fills them.
--If a man is filled with anger, then anger controls his
life.
--If a man is filled with greed, then greed dominates
his life.
--If a man is filled with love, then love influences all he
does.
When the Holy Spirit fills you, he will have the
controllinginterest in your life. It is “control by
consent.”
Being filledwith the Holy Spirit doesn’t mean I have
more of the Spirit, it means the Spirit has more of me.
It doesn’t happen all at once any more than you get
drunk all at once. Being filledwith the Spirit happens
as you continuallychooseto live under his influence.
You do not become an alcoholicby taking a drink, but
by continuousdrinking, and so it is with the Holy
Spirit. Fillingis not an event, but a process of yielding
to the Spirit in thought and action.
We need to be filled again and again
We could legitimatelytranslatethis verse this way:
“Be continuallyfilledwith the Holy Spirit.” Wuest
translatesit as “Be constantlycontrolledby the
Spirit.” John MacArthur says we could translateit
literallywith somethinglike “Be being kept filled with
the Spirit.” The Amplified catches the present tense
this way: “But ever be filled and stimulatedwith the
(Holy) Spirit.” The filling of the Spirit is supposedto
be the normal way of life for the Christian.
To quote Dr MacArthur - "If we do not obey this
command (be filledwith the Spirit), we cannotobey
any other—simplybecausewe cannot do any of God’s
will apart from God’s Spirit. Outside of the command
for unbelieversto trust in Christfor salvation, there is
no more practical and necessarycommand in
Scripture than the one for believers to be filledwith
the Spirit."
ILLUSTRATION OUR DESPERATENEED FOR
FILLING BY COMPARINGTO A WORKGLOVE –
The glove has purpose (just as do we - Eph 2:10-note)
but cannot fulfill its intended purpose unless it has an
"indwelling"hand to enable it, to give it the direction
(desire) and the power (cp the Spirit in Phil 2:13-note).
Plainlyput, the glove by itselfcan do nothing (cp
Jesus' words in John 15:5 where "nothing" in Greek is
the strongest way to say "absolutelynothing"… O yes,
we can even do "religiousworks" that look very good
to others and garner their adulation, but such fleshly
empowered works yield no fruit for eternity - cp Jn
15:16). The picture of a glove's need to continually
depend on the indwellinghand directly applies to our
Christianlife, which is not to be a natural (explicable)
life, but a supernatural(marvelouslyinexplicable)life!
We like the glove need to be continuallyfilledwith the
Spirit, controlledby and empowered by the indwelling
Spirit, if we are to accomplishanything supernatural.
As we have repeatedly said, we CANNOTKEEP ONE
COMMAND of the NT by relying on our natural,
fleshly strength. We must continually, even moment
by moment, deny our old self and seek the newness of
the Spirit's work. We must continuallyrenounce self
effort, self reliance, self sufficiency(do you see the
"key word"?)and insteadmake the conscious,
volitional choice(the choice of our will, even that
choice mysteriouslybeing energized by the indwelling
Spirit!!) to rely wholly on the Holy Spirit. This
practice is of renouncing and relying will go on all day
long, all the days of our life! It's what theologicallyis
known as progressivesanctification. WhileJesus was
the basis of justification, the Spirit was His "Chief
Operating Officer" applying the finishedwork of the
Cross of Christto our heart when we believedin
Jesus. Similarly, in progressivesanctification, the
Spirit is the "CEO" and gives us the desireand the
power (Php 2:13NLT-note)to continuallywalk by the
Spirit (Gal 5:16 - to be more fully discussedin our
next lesson). In sum, apart from the Spirit of Christ
fillingus (bearing us along, permeating us so that
Christflavors all we say, do and think [cp 2Cor2:14-
16] and controllingus – like rage or anger controls us -
read Luke 4:28-29, Lk 6:11)we can do nothing of
eternal value!Absolutelynothing! The pride of our
fallenflesh chafes at that truth and will until the day
we die!

YIELDEDNESSOR SURRENDER
WALVOOARD, (2) The Initial Act of Surrender.
Every Christian faces the obvious fact that no man can serve two
masters or lords (Matt 6:24). It is impossible to enter into the
present joys of salvation without accepting the Savior as Lord, but
this is a truth to be apprehended in experience as well as in doctrine.
Accordingly Christians are constantly exhorted to yield themselves
to God. In Romans 6:13, the exhortation is found, “Neither yield ye
your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield
yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your
members as instruments of righteousness unto God.” The Greek
word for yield is found in two tenses in this verse which illustrates
clearly that the appeal is to a yielding to God which is accomplished
once for all.
Dr. Lewis Sperry Chafer has summed the issue concisely: “A
yieldedness to the will of God is not demonstrated by some one
particular issue: it is rather a matter of having taken the will of God
as the rule of one’s life. To be in the will of God is simply to be
willing to do His will without reference to any particular thing He
may choose. It is electing His will to be final, even before we know
what He may wish us to do. It is, therefore, not a question of being
willing to do some one thing: it is a question of being willing to do
anything, when, where and how, it may seem best in His heart of
love. It is taking the normal and natural position of childlike trust
which has already consented to the wish of the Father even before
anything of the outworking of His wish is revealed.”
BARCLAY, " "You've got to fill a man with something."
The heathen found his happiness in filling himself with
wine and with worldly pleasures; the Christian found his
happiness in being filled with the Spirit.
From this passagewe can gather certain facts about the
Christian gatherings in the early days.
(i) The early Church was a singing Church. Its
characteristic was psalms and hymns and spiritual songs;
it had a happiness which made men sing.
WAYNE BARBER, "God lives in us. We have all of God we
are ever going to get. Isn’t that wonderful? Now God
wants to control us from within. He wants all of us. That
is the key. The key is not getting any more of God. The
key is God getting more and more of us.
Singing, as here meant, is a direct and solemn act of
worship, and should be considered such as really as
prayer. In singing we should regard ourselves as speaking
directly to God, and the words, therefore, should be
spoken with a solemnity and awe becoming such a direct
address to the great JEHOVAH. So Pliny says of the early
Christians, Carmenque Christo quasi Dee dicere secure
invieem--" and they sang among themselves hymns to
Christ as God." If this be the true nature and design of
public psalmody, then it follows
(1.) that all should regard it as an act of solemn worship
in which they should engage--in heart at least, if they
cannot themselves sing.
FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT
my note, It is a choice just like getting drunk. we choose
to allow the Spirit to take control in our lives so that all
we do is pleasing to God because we are motivated by
His presence and power. He moves us to be the best we
can be.
webber, "I guess Romans 12:1-2 helped me more than
anything else, when you think of being filled with the
Spirit as involving confession of sin, surrender of will,
surrender of intellect, surrender of body, surrender of
time, surrender of talents, surrender of desires, and
surrender of possessions. Romans 12:1-2 drew a picture
of what it meant to be constantly "be being filled" with
the Spirit of God. In this passage Paul writes…
12:1 I urge you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of
God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice,
acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of
worship.2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be
transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may
prove what the will of God is, that which is good and
acceptable and perfect.
A man can be filled with many things. He can be filled
with rage. He can be filled with jealousy. He can be filled
with envy. He can be filled with a lot of things, but Paul
says,
"Be filled with the Spirit of God. Be under His control. Be
satisfied with Him and only Him. Be dominated by the
presence of the Holy God that lives in your hearts."
wayne barber . "But I believe the Apostle Paul gives us
the three major effects, the three major symptoms of a
person being filled with the Spirit of God in verses 19-21.
That is what I want us to look at.
THE SPIRIT FILLED LIFE:
SINGING
There will be three symptoms that will come upon an
individual who is constantly being filled, controlled by,
the already indwelling Spirit of God. The first one is
found in verse 19—singing is a result of being filled with
the Spirit of God:
"speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and
spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your
heart to the Lord."
That’s a Spirit-filled life. What does that mean? That
means a life where every room of the heart, where the
Spirit lives, has been opened up. Jesus in His light and
love and life has permeated those rooms. Out of that
heart, that has been cleansed by His blood and filled with
His presence, comes a song to the lips and to the mind. It
is always there. Singing is just something that erupts in a
person’s life who is filled with the Spirit of God.
Something about the Holy Spirit produces that music in a
person’s heart. That doesn’t mean you can carry a tune,
it simply means that you can make a joyful noise. There is
a song in your heart.
A person says,
"Well, I have a great ability to sing. That must mean that I
am filled with the Spirit."
No. People who can’t carry a tune can make a joyful
sound. It doesn’t mean that you can sing as well as other
people. It means that you’ve got a song in your heart. It
means that somehow music now fills up your life and
there is something that makes sense in your life. There is
just that song that erupts out of your heart. Psalm 40
says,
"I waited patiently upon the Lord. He heard my cry of
distress. He lifted me out of the miry clay, put my feet
upon a rock and put a brand new song in my heart."
That is always the way it is. It is a new song, a fresh song.
It is something that God puts within your soul.
Now Paul explains among whom, how, from where and
to whom Spirit-filled believers are to sing. Let’s work our
way through verse 19 and see what he has to say.
First of all, he says among whom: "speaking to one
another." Do you realize that the literal means "speaking
to yourselves," referring to believers as a community? I
want to share something with you. All through Scripture
you are going to find that music, music that exalts God,
music that exalts Christ, music that praises Him is never,
ever meant for the unbeliever. It is always meant for the
believer. So often we use music as an evangelistic tool.
That doesn’t mean it can’t be used that way, but that is
not its original purpose. It was intended to be amongst
yourselves. It was for believers when we come together.
Folks, what goes on when we come together is unique to
any other gathering on the face of this earth. Do you
realize that? There is not one single thing you can go to
outside of a church gathering when brothers and sisters
are together singing praises to God, celebrating the Lord
Jesus Christ, that is anything close to that. You see, this is
what it’s for. That is why we sing. I hear people say
sometimes,
"Well, we ought to have less singing and more
preaching."
Are you kidding me? There is a balance in this thing.
Folks, I want to sing, don’t you? I want to get with
brothers and sisters singing the praises unto God. It was
intended for believers and it was intended for praise and
exaltation of our Lord. So among whom are we to sing? It
is among ourselves.
Secondly, how are we to sing?
First of all he mentions psalms. Obviously, of course,
there is the book of Psalms and it is a hymnbook. The
book of Psalms is wisdom literature, and they were songs
that were sung back to the Lord. We have hymns that
exalt God. The word "psalm" has the idea of playing
music with strings. In other words, it is with an
instrumental accompaniment. The word "psalm" means
to sing songs to the accompaniment of music, stringed or
whatever else, instrumental music. That is the way they
would sing the psalm. That was a part of their worship in
the early days of the church at Ephesus that has evolved
right into today. It usually reflected the nature and the
work of God especially in the life of believers. They were
sung again with musical accompaniment.
The word "hymns" however, was a little different word.
The hymns, from all the study that I could do, refer
primarily to the songs of praise which, in the early
church, did not just exalt God, but exalted His Christ, the
Son of God, the One who is the embodiment of the
Godhead fully. They exalted Christ, whereas the psalms
evolved from way back and exalted the Godhead. The
hymns would lift up and exalt the Lord Jesus. There are
many people who think that a lot of pieces of the New
Testament, a lot of things that are said, are taken right
out of some of the early Christian songs or hymns that
were sung in the church.
HYMNS ARE WHAT I WROTEAS A PASTOR. I COMPOSED
OVER TWO HUNDRED HYMNS AND OUR PIANIST PUT
THEM TO MUSIC TO SING IN CHURCH. MOST OF THEM
WERE SUNG TO TUNES THAT WE ALREADYKNEW FROM
FAMILIAR HYMNS
1. AS WE PRAISE YOUR NAME Adoration now we render, To
your sov’reign pow’r surrender, Let us see you in your
splendor, As we praise, as we praise your name.
Thank you for our sins remission;Hear us offer our petition;
Help us love without condition, As we praise, as we praise
your name.
By your grace Lord, keep us guided; And our wills fully
decided,
That we be one, not divided, As we praise, as we praise your
name.
Thank you Lord for love unending, And for gifts you’re ever
sending. On your grace we are depending, As we praise, as we
praise your name.
We are grateful and excited, For the flame your praise ignited;
May your Spirit be delighted, As we praise, as we praise your
name.
2. . CLAP YOUR HANDS BASED ON PSALM 47 Sung to Ode To
Joy CLAP YOUR, CLAP YOUR, CLAP YOUR TWO HANDS,
SHOUT TO GOD WITH CRIES OF JOY. AWESOME IS THE LORD
BEYOND MAN; HE INDEED IS LORD MOST HIGH. CLAP AND
SHOUT AND WITH GREAT JOY SING, LET YOUR SAVIOUR SEE
YOUR MIRTH. LET THE WHOLE WORLD KNOW HE'S YOUR
KING; KING OF ALL KINGS ON THE EARTH. CLAP YOUR HANDS
AND RAISE YOUR VOICES, DO NOT HIDE YOUR LOVE FOR HIM.
GOD HAS GIVEN MANY CHOICES TO PREVENT LOVES
GROWING DIM. WITH THE BODY NOW WE PRAISE YOU, WITH
THE TONGUE WE PRAISE YOUR NAME. HELP US NOW TO
LEAVE THIS CHURCH PEW LOVING MORE THAN WHEN WE
CAME.
What is the symptom of a Spirit-filled heart? It is that
music that comes forth from that. So what is the first
symptom of the Spirit-filled life? It is not speaking in
tongues. It is not doing miracles. The first symptom he
says is singing and making melody in your heart, singing
to the Lord. Isn’tthat incredible? That is always a
symptom of a person filled with the Spirit of God.
"The joy of the Lord is your strength " (Nehemiah 8:10).
Jesus was the most joy-filled person ever to live on this
planet. We are told this in Hebrews 1:9, where it says of
Christ, “…your God, has set you above your companions
by anointing you with the oil of joy.” In other words,
there has never been another above Jesus in joy. He had
the highest level of joy possible, and none has never
matched it. An apple is an apple, and a pear is a pear, but
not all apples and pears are equal. Some are better than
others. They are bigger, juicier, and sweeter than others.
So it is with joy, and all the fruits of the Spirit. They grow
like fruit, and so there are all different stages of growth.
Jesus had the perfect fruit of joy. This is what all believers
will have in heaven. This was the hope of even the Old
Testament saints. David says in Psalm 16:11, “You will fill
me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasure at
your right hand.” Until then, the goal of the Christian is
to be filled with the Spirit, and get as near to having the
joy of Jesus as possible.
The New Testament has 11 words for different aspects of
joy, and they are used 326 times. It is a major theme of
God’s Word, and a major obligation of the Christian life.
There is a wealth of English synonyms for joy-bliss,
buoyancy, cheerfulness, delight, ecstasy, elation,
exuberance, felicity, gaiety, gladness, glee, hilarity,
jubilation, rapture, and rejoicing. All of these can be
summedup in the word happy, which the New
Testament calls blessed. Vernon Grounds, the well
known evangelical theologian, commenting on Paul’s
declaration in I Tim.6:15, that God “is the blessed and
only Potentate or Ruler”, says, “Since blessed means
happy, Paul is here affirming that God is happy. The
Happy God! God in Himself is a shoreless sea of vibrant
glory, a fathomless ocean of sheerest ecstasy…God
Himself is the Rejoicer who before the hosts of heaven
reacts with a thrilling happiness that baffles the language
and logic of earth. Infinitely joyful, He is the Source of all
genuine joy.”
Does this mean the Christian has to be a pollyanna, and
be blind to the reality of a fallen world? Not at all, God
knows the evil of man like no other, but He is by nature
happy and joyful, inspite of His knowledge. Joy is not a
denial of evil and a pretense that all is well. It is a
conviction that life is a comedy and not a tragedy, and
that in Christ good will triumph over evil. History is His-
story, and it will have a happy ending.
Listen to Cyprian, the Christian leader of the church at
Carthage in A.D. 200. He wrote,
“This is a cheerful world as I see it from my fair
garden…But if
I could ascend some high mountain and look out over the
wide
lands, you know very well what I would see. Brigands on
the
highways. Pirates on the seas. Armies fighting. Cities
burning.
In the amphitheatres men murdered to please
applauding crowds.
Selfishness and cruelty, and misery and despair, under all
roofs.
It is a bad world, Donatus, an incredibly bad world. But I
have
discovered in the midst of it, a quiet and holy people who
have
learned a great secret. They have found a joy which is a
thousand
times better than any of the pleasures of our sinful life.
They are
despised and persecuted, but they care not. They are
masters
of their souls. They have overcome the world. These
people,
Donatus, are Christians, and I am one of them.”
There is no blindness here to evil, but eyes wide open to
the good news in Christ which produces the joy that
overcomes the world. The Christian deals with his fallen
nature in a different way than the world does. Leslie
Flynn and his book, Gift of Joy, says the way the world
deals with sin is to-
1. Minimize it. It is no big deal, everybody does it.
2. Rationalize it. They blame their genes, parents, or their
mates, or the world situation.
3. Anesthetize it. By a constant round of activity, or by
drugs.
4. Neutralize it. By doing good to counteract their bad.

Holy spirit lesson 4

  • 1. HOLY SPIRIT LESSON 4 I don't care how widely traveled you are, I know you have never sailed among the Island of Langerhans, or drifted lazily down the Aqueduct of Sylvius. Nor have any of you everstrolled along the banks of Hunter's Canal, or watchedthe sun go down behind McBurney's Point. None of you have ever ridden through the Tunnel of Carti, nor have you ever climbed the Pyramids of Malpighi. I can say this with confidence, not because I know where all of you have ever been, nor because allof these places are fictions and unreal. On the contrary, they are more abundantly real than most of the places you have ever been. But I can saythis because allof these places are parts of our body. The Islands of Langerhans are small masses oftissues in our pancreas. The Aqueduct of Sylvius is part of the brain. Hunter's Canal is in the thigh. McBurney's Point is a spoton the right side which is tender to the touch in acute appendicitis. The Tunnel of Carti is in the inner ear. The Pyramids of Malpighi is in the kidneys. The point of this little anatomy lessonis that there is a greatdeal about our bodies that we do not know. We live in them, but we know more about the house our body lives in than we know about our bodies, which is the house of our spirit. Sophocles said, "Numberless are the world's wonders, but none more wondrous than the body of man." We live in this wondrous temple 24 hours a day, and 365 days a year. We never leave this house in which we dwell until we die, for to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. I CORINTHIANS6:19-20
  • 2. Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies. Amplified: Do you not know that your body is the temple (the very sanctuary)of the Holy Spirit Who lives within you, Whom you have received [as a Gift] from God? You are not your own, I. BODY IS TEMPLE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. 2. YOU ARE NOT YOUR OWN. 3. YOU ARE BOUGHTWITH A PRICE. 4. GLORIFY GOD WITH YOUR BODY. Somr of you may remember my study on I coras the worst church in the New Testament. It was notorious for so many sins of controversyover leadership, tolerant of sins in the people, the sin of suing one another and here he deals with the sin of immorality because it was a common practice of having sex with prostitues. Not an issue in any of the churches that I served, but the fact is I never askedif it was an issue.
  • 3. SPURGEON, "You will notice that in this chapter the apostlePaul has been dealingwith sins of the flesh, with fornicationand adultery. Now, it is at all times exceedingly difficultfor the preacher either to speak or to write upon this subject; it demands the strictest care to keep the language guarded, so that while we are denouncinga detestableevil we do not ourselves promote it by a single expressionthat shouldbe otherwisethan chaste and pure. Possession."Your body is a temple of the Holy Ghost."The context requires that we give to this a strictly individualapplication. It is spoken here, not of the Church as the Body of Christ, "the fulness of him that fillethall in all,"but of the physical personalityof each individualmember of that body. The idea of the old temple was not that of the modern church, which is a buildingin which men may gather to worshipGod. The old temple was a shrinefor Deity to dwell in; and this Divinepresence in the central shrine was conceivedas hallowingthe entire temple buildings, right through to the outer courts and gates. Nothing might enter the precincts that defiled or
  • 4. worked abomination. Illustratefrom Solomon's temple, and the extreme jealousywith which the Jews regarded the sacredplace. 1 COR. 3:16 Do you not know that you are a temple of God and that the Spiritof God dwells in you? 2 COR 6:16 Or what agreementhas the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God; just as God said, “I will dwell in them and walk among them; And I will be their God, and they shall be My people. EPH. 2:21 in whom the whole building, being fitted together,is growing into a holy temple in the Lord, 22 in whom you also are being built together into a dwelling of God in the Spirit.
  • 5. Amplified:In Him the whole structure is joined (bound, welded) together harmoniously, and it continues to rise (grow, increase)into a holy temple in the Lord [a sanctuary dedicated, consecrated, and sacred to the presence of the Lord]. (Amplified Bible - Lockman) Ezek 36.27:"And I will put my Spirit within you." Ezek 37.14:" And I shall put my Spirit in you, and you shall live." In the New Testamentthe doctrine opens upon our view with increasing powerand brightness. Our Lord's own words are familiar. John 14.16, 17:"And I will ask the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever; even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because itsees him not, neither knows him: but you know him, for he dwells with you, and shall be in you." Ro 8.9: "But you are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwells in you." Ro 8:11: "But if the Spirit of him that raisedup Jesus from the dead dwell in you," etc. God is most clearly manifested in humanity. Christ, pre- eminently, was the glorious temple in which God dwelt, and through whom the Divine glory was revealed to the world.
  • 6. There was the holy of holies; there the altar which made every other altar fire grow pale and expire. 2. The temple was very magnificent (1 Kings 6:32). So the soul of a believer is an illustrious temple. God Himself brings His glory into it (Psalms 45:13). Christ never admired the goodly stones of the visible, but admired the glory of the spiritual temple. 1 Kings 6:32 New International Version (NIV) 32 And on the two olive-wooddoors he carved cherubim, palm trees and open flowers, and overlaid the cherubim and palm trees with hammered gold. 3. The temple was a place setapart for God’s peculiar worship; it was separatedfrom all other places. So a believer’s heart is consecratedground, and setapart for God’s service. 4. The temple was a place of God’s specialpresence:He did there command His blessings. So in a spiritual heart Godwonderfully manifests His presence: there He gives forth the influences of His grace, the communications of His love. 5. 6. The temple had a fire burning on the altar; so a believer’s heart is the altar on which there is a sacredfire still burning 7. The temple, being an hallowed place, was to be kept clean II. This Divine temple of the soul differs from other temples, and hath a transcendentexcellencyabove them. 1. Other material temples, though of a beautiful structure, yet have no life in them; but a believer is a living
  • 7. 1 Peter2:5 you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrificesacceptable to God through Jesus Christ. We are the new spiritual house, the spiritual house of God not a physical building. Paul writes in Eph 2:19-22 - Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and aliens, w but fellow citizens x with God’s people and members of God’s household, y Eph 2:20 built z on the foundation a of the apostles and prophets, b with Christ Jesus himself c as the chief cornerstone. d Eph 2:21 In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple e in the Lord. Eph 2:22 And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit. If God meant simply to convey the idea that the Spirit lives within the believer, He could well have used words such as “home,” “house,” or “residence.” But by choosing the word “temple” to describe the Spirit’s dwelling, He conveys the idea that our bodies are the shrine, or the sacred place, in which the Spirit not only lives, but is worshiped, revered, and honored. Therefore, how we behave, think and speak, and what we let into the temple through our eyes and ears
  • 8. becomes critically important as well, for every thought, word and deed is in His view. Even though He will never leave us, it is entirely possible to grieve the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 4: 30). Instructing the Ephesians to not grieve the Spirit, Paul told them to “get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you” (Ephesians 4:31- 32). When we live by the Spirit, we will no longer gratify the desires of the sinful nature (Galatians 5:16). Quotes Ravi Zacharias “We are his temple. We do not turn in a certain directlon to pray. We are not bound by having to go into a building so that we can commune with God. There are no unique postures and times and limitations that restrict our access to God. My relationship with God is intimate and personal. The Christian does not go to the temple to worship. The Christian takes the temple with him or her. Jesus lifts us beyond the building and pays the human body the highest compliment by making it His dwelling place, the place where He meets with us.
  • 9. Factually, the Temple Mount is the precise location of the Temple. It's the holiest place in the world for Jews. It's the third holiest place for Muslims. Solomon's temple also was designed to increase the attractiveness of the city of his residence. - Julius Wellhausen The Lord showed me, so that I did see clearly, that he did not dwell in these temples which men had commanded and set up, but in people's hearts... his people were his temple, and he dwelt in them. - George Fox Jesus predicted the same thing: “the hour comes, when you shall neither in this mountain, nor at Jerusalem, worship the Father……. But the hour comes, and now is, when the true worshipers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeks such to worship him. So the only temple valid in the eyes of God is yourself:
  • 10. You also, as living stones, are built up into a spiritual temple, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ. (1 Peter 2:6) So stop fantasizing about a piece of real estate somewhere in the Middle East and start worshipping YHWH in His true nature: spiritually. Psalm 27:4 One thing I have asked from the LORD, that I shall seek: That I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, To behold the beauty of the LORD And to meditate in His temple. MIKE BICKLE, "It was only in seeing the beauty of God that David could see his beauty in God. Did you know that in redemption you possess a beauty that’s staggering? You possess a beauty even in your creation. The fact that you’re a human being already separates you from all the rest of the created order. A token of your beauty is seen in your natural humanity, but a greater fullness of your beauty is seen in your redemption. In seeing the beauty of God, David could see his own beauty more clearly. Beloved, when you see God’s beauty and then you see your beauty in God, it changes your emotional chemistry. It changes the way that you think and feel about everything. A man or woman who sees God’s beauty and his or her own beauty in God feels
  • 11. differently about everything. It changes you. You feel powerful when you feel beautiful. You feel powerful before sin when you feel beautiful before God. Redemption has beautified the people of God. It says in Isaiah 61.3, one of the well-known statements of redemption, “God has given you beauty for ashes” (Isa. 61:3, paraphrased). In place of the ash heap of broken humanity God has given you beauty, but more than that He has given you His beauty for ashes. The very beauty of God has been imparted to you. Moses was to pray in Psalm 90:17, “Let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us” (Ps. 90:17, NKJV). That’s what took place in Jesus Christ. It’s not just beauty for ashes; it’s God’s beauty that has been given to you. It’s fantastic! Moses understood that a little; David understood that a little. God beautifies everything He touches redemptively. Whenever God touches something redemptively, He beautifies it with His own beauty. God beautifies His people with salvation (Ps. 149:4). He makes you beautiful. He adorns and makes beautiful a bride for His Son (Rev. 21:2). God the Father makes beautiful the people of God for Jesus in the grace of God No Christian needs to lack self-esteem, for they are beautiful in the eyes of God. He does not dwell in any shack but only in temples. The Temple's Interior
  • 12. 5He paneled the main room with cypress, which he overlaid with fine gold and decorated with palm tree and chain designs. 6He adorned the temple with precious stones for beauty, and its gold was from Parvaim. 7He overlaid its beams, thresholds, walls, and doors with gold, and he carved cherubim on the walls.… Berean Study Bible PIPER, "Christian joy is a good feeling in the soul, produced by the Holy Spirit, as he causes us to see the beauty of Christ in the word and in the world. the Holy Spirit opens the eyes of my heart to see the beauty of Christ. When I see Christ in all that he is doing, and all that he is, then my heart is drawn out in joy towards him. It is not just in the word that we see Christ. We see him in his gifts and in people. We see him in his gifts of nature. We see him in his gifts of food and in all of the good things that our Father in heaven gives to us. Every gift of Christ to us is intended to be a communication of something of himself. So we see Christ not only — we taste Christ not only — in his word, but also in his works. A temple speaks of beauty.
  • 13. 6- 7 Dr. Jack L. Arnold Corinth was a city given over to the worship of sex. A thousand prostitutes, male and female, came down from the Temple of Aphrodite into the city at night to carry out their wickedtrade. An intimate part of the Corinthian paganworship was involvement in sexualpromiscuity. Sexual immorality was acceptedand highly regardedin that culture. Apparently there were some Christians who had not shakenall of their pagan past and were highly influenced by their sex-crazedculture. Therefore, there were some in the Corinthian church who argued that sexualimmorality was right and proper for Christians. The problem of the church at Corinth is really the same problem the church in America faces-whatto do with degenerating attitudes about sexand the ever increasing sexuallaxity within the church. The American sex-saturatedsocietyis having a tremendous impact upon the church. In the Christian churches, there are many who say
  • 14. we need to softenour view of sexualimmorality and even homosexuality and allow them to be practicedby Christians without recrimination. READ I COR. 6:"15-20 Deuteronomy 23:17-18 "None of the daughters of Israelshall be a cult prostitute, nor shall any of the sons of Israelbe a cult prostitute. "You shall not bring the hire of a harlot or the wagesofa dog into the house of the LORD your God for any votive offering, for both of these are an abomination to the LORD your God. There are 48 verses in the Bible that deal with prostitutes. It was popular in all the ancient world and today it is in our country one of the biggestmoney makers there is. Christians today need the teaching of Paul just as much as they did in his day. Barclay- because God's Spirit dwells in us we have become a temple of God; and so our very bodies are sacred. And more--Christ died to save not a bit of a man, but the whole man, body and soul. Christ gave his life to give a man a redeemedsoul and a pure body. Becauseofthat a man's body is not his own to do with as he likes;it is Christ's and he must use it, not for the satisfactionof his ownlusts, but for the glory of Christ. (1 Corinthians - Daily Study Bible) Spurgeon- “Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost?” Does this not make a man outstanding? Have you never stoodin awe of your own self? Have you thought enoughabout how this poor body is sanctified, dedicated, and elevatedinto a sacredcondition by being set apart as a temple of the Holy Ghost?… GodHimself then dwells in you. The Spirit of Him who raisedChrist from the dead is in you. You life is hidden with Christ in God and the Spirit seals you, anoints you, and abides in you. By the Spirit, we have access to the Father. By the Spirit, we perceive our adoption and learn to cry, “Abba, Father.” By the Spirit, we are made partakers of the divine nature and have communion with the threefold, holy Lord.
  • 15. WHOLE TRINITY And so Jesus’promise in John 14 that the Holy Spirit would reside within them was not limited to the elevenapostles who were present that night. In fact the Holy Spirit indwells every Christian. In John 14:17 Jesus promised that "the Spirit of truth… abides with you and will be in you." In John 14:23, Jesus said"If anyone loves Me, he will keepMy word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him, and make Our abode with him." This changes your whole conceptof prayer. God is not just in heaven, He is right here in us and we canbe praying without ceasing if we begin to grasp it. We canbe talking to God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit as we walk through life. He is presentlike a companion and we can be asking his advice and guidance every step we take, and for every decisionwe must make. Prayer is just talking to the one who is walking along with you. Galatians 5:16, ”This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.” Today I’m walking, with The Holy Spirit today the road we are both going to hit. I’ll be trusting Him, for the right directions I’ll followHis lead
  • 16. without any objections. We’ll travel together, without Him I won’t go for the righteous way I know He knows. I’ll be lookingfor Him, to steer my desires into all that God’s will asks and requires. Today I’m walking, with the Holy Spirit to whatever He says I’m going to commit! Harry Ironside - He says, "Your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost." Do we think as much of this as we should? Would you allow many things about which you are carelessif that were constantlybefore your mind? You think of a church building as a sanctuary setapart for the work of the Lord. You step in from the outside, and immediately your hat comes off, for you realize that you are in the sanctuary. We teachour boys and girls not to be boisterous or
  • 17. frivolous in the church building for it is the house where we meet with God, and we realize that reverent behavior should characterize us. But think of this, your body is the sanctuary, it is temple in which the Holy Spirit dwells. How careful you and I ought to be that we grieve not that blessedOne who dwells within, that we do not bring dishonor upon the name of the Savior who has sentHis Spirit to live in our body. Say the words over and overagain to yourself until they getsuch a grip on you that you will never forgetthem: "My body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. God dwells in me." It will give you to realize the dignity of the body and the responsibility that attaches to it. (Ironside's Notes on1Cor 6) As D L Moodyrightly said - "I think it is clearlytaught in the Scripture that every believer has the Holy Ghost dwelling in him. He may be quenching the Spirit of God, and he may not glorify God as he should, but if he is a believer on the Lord Jesus Christ, the Holy Ghost dwells in him. But I want to call your attention to another fact. I believe today, that though Christian men and women have the Holy Spirit dwelling in them, yet He is not dwelling within them in power; in other words, God has a greatmany sons and daughters without power." But to enable us to live this life we need the daily help of the Holy Spirit. He entered our hearts at the moment of regeneration, and has been with us ever since. • 18. SPURGEON, "You will notice the text says, "Ye were bought with a price." It is a common classical expressionto signify that the purchasewas expensive. Of course, the very expression, "Ye were bought," implies a price, but the words "with a price" are added, as if to show that it was not for nothing that ye were purchased. There was a something inestimably precious paid for you; and ye need scarcely that I remind you that "ye were not redeemed with corruptiblethings, as silverand gold;" "but with the precious bloodof Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot." Remember, too, that this fact is the most important one in all your history. That you were redeemed "with a price" is the greatest event in your biography. Even your birth, what was it unless a second birth had been yours! If it be the most importantthing in the world to you, that you were "bought with a price," let it exercise the most prominentinfluence over your entire career.
  • 19. III. And now I must close, and oh, may God give power to his word while I beg to speak upon the last point, namely, THE NATURAL CONCLUSION: "Therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit."I am not clear that the lastfew words are in the original. A large number of the old manuscripts and versions, and some of the more importantof them, finishthe verse at the word "body" -- "Therefore glorify God in your body." It was the body the apostle was speakingabout, and not the spirit, and there is no necessityfor the last words: still we will not further raisethe question, but take them as being the inspired word of God: but still. I must make the remark, that accordingto the connectionthe force of the apostle's language falls upon the body; and perhaps it is so, because we are so apt to forget the truth, that the body is redeemed and is the Lord's, and should be made to glorify God. The Christianman's body shouldglorify God by its chastity. Pure as the lily shouldwe be from every taint of uncleanness. The body shouldglorify God by temperance also;in all things, in eating drinking,

"Whetherye eat or drink, or whatsoeverye do, do all to the glory of God," or as the apostleputs it elsewhere, "whatsoeverye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him." The Christianman can make every meal a sacrament, and his ordinary avocations the exercise of his spiritual priesthood. The body ought to glorify God by its industry. A lazy servantis a bad Christian. A working man who is always looking for Saturday night, a man who never spends a drop of sweat except when the master is lookingon, does not glorify God in his body. The best Christianis the man who is not afraid of hard work when it is due, who works not as an eye-servantor man pleaser, but in singleness of heart seeks to glorify God. Our bodies used to work hard enough for the devil;now they belong to God we will make them work for him. "Ye were bought with a price." The apostlerefers to a historicfact of the past, viz. the personal self surrenderand sacrifice of Jesus, the Son of God, for the redemption of men. This, with all that it involvedof obedience, humiliation, and suffering even unto death, was the "price" that bought us. We may differ in our abstractideas as to the nature of the atonement, but this fact is to the Christianmind indisputable. "The Son of man came to give his life a ransom for many" (Matthew 20:28);"Christhath redeemed us from the curse," etc. (Galatians3:13); "Redeemed with the precious blood of Christ,"etc. (1 Peter 1:19). Rather let us regard it as an instrument that God has wisely constructed, "fearfullyand wonderfullymade," and through which the holy energy of the spiritmay serve his purposes and do him honour. - W. He says, “for the temple of God is holy, and that is what you are.” The word “holy” is hagios. We saw that in chapter 1. Holiness does not mean perfection when it comes to us. When it comes to Him, yes, but not to us. His is inherent. Ours is imputed. But the word “holy” means we have been set apart, we have been put into a class all by ourselves. Amongst all humanity, we are in a class all by ourselves. Why? Becausethe Spirit of God has takenup residence in our heart. He has separatedus unto Himself and for His purposes, therefore, we have been made holy. His living in our life is proof of that fact. Paul says, “and that is what you are.” You are holy because Godis holy and lives in you and has separatedyou unto Himself and made you holy. We as believers are the very temple of God. He sent His own Spirit to take up residence in our life.

This is, of course, whatGod intended, but like all good things that are carried to excess this too becomes anarea of life where the sinful nature of man thrives. Sexual immorality is the first fruit of the flesh that Paul refers to, just as love is the first fruit of the Spirit. This means that one of the first signs that you are not being led of the Spirit, but are being led by your sinful nature, is the desire to be sexually immoral. Since everyone is so tempted at some point in life, this confirms
  • 42. Paul's point of the conflict betweenthe flesh and the spirit. Now this has a direct bearing on the work place. The one thing I learned in my years of secularwork is that sexand work go togetherlike love and worship. On Sunday we focus on agape love and worship, and then on Monday we enter a world of work where the focus is on sex. It is no wonder we have a hard time bridging this gap and trying to relate the one to the other. In the plants I workedin where a secretarycame out of the office into the plant, the men would whistle and then have crude discussions aboutanatomy. You didn't learn anything about love, but you could pick up some ideas about sex, because that is the theme of the work place. If that was true 30 years ago, I cannot imagine what it is now. Sexual harassmentlaws have no doubt curbed some of the sexuality, but there is no way it caneliminate it. In the place where I workedmen sometimes had pinups by their machines, or in their lockers, andthe flirting that went on was a major factorin that environment. In my counseling over the years I have noted that most of the Christians I am aware ofwho have had affairs have done so because oftheir relationships in the work place. Many a Christian marriage has been killed by the work place morality that exalts sex over love. Surveys revealthat working wives have twice as many affairs as do non- working wives. It is not entirely due to a immoral focus on sex. There are natural factors that add to the danger of the work place. Work and sex are linked by the fact that they both begin about the same time in life. Young people are getting their first serious jobs at the same time they are going through puberty, or when they are at the peak of their sexdrive. I didn't have to read about this to know it, for I workedwith a gang of teenagers in a theatre for severalyears, and I know how the theme of sex is never far awayif it is not dominating the environment. Then there is the factorthat people who work togetheroften develop a greaterintimacy than people who get married. People who get married often ceaseto talk, and they lose a sense ofa growing intimacy. But people who work togetherkeepon talking and learning about eachother, and sometimes evenabout their mates.
  • 43. They have more time to talk at work often than mates do at home. The result is people develop the inevitable feeling of desire, and the work place becomes a breeding ground for the lust of the flesh. People at work often spend hours a day in romantic flirting. This is the very thing that mates are to do, but they don't do because theyare too tired after a day of work and flirting. The work place is a dangerous place, not just because ofindustrial accidents, but because ofits predominant emphasis on sex in contrastto love. If the Christian is going to have any impact in his work for the cause of Christ, he or she has to somehow bring the love of Sunday back to that Monday environment, and help people to see that love is not a mere hot house flowertoo weak to survive in the world of the work place. Christians bring some of the lust of the work place back to the church, but it is suppressed. You don't walk in and find men telling off-coloredjokes, and you don't see them poking one another and saying, "Did you see the legs on that gal in the first pew." Lust is always latentin our lives, and cansurface even in a sacredsetting, but we suppress it and say, "Get thee behind me Satan." But I wonder if we do not then do the same thing at work in reverse. We suppress the issue of agape love, and then unconsciouslysay, "Getthee behind me Lord." Where lust is king it is as embarrassing for us to talk of love as it is to talk of lust where love is king. So we compartmentalize life, and on Sunday we worship and love, and on Monday through Friday we work and lust. It is sort of the best of both worlds. The only problem with this is that it misses the whole point of Sunday's worship and love. It is meant by God to so fill us with the love of Christ that we want to go into the world and bring to it the fruits of the Spirit that men might see there is more to life than the fruit of the flesh. The work place is our world that Jesus wants us to reach. It is our mission field where we canplant the kingdom of God. If we could only see this, we could see that whateverwe do can be our calling, for it can be a key wayby which God can use us to open the door to the kingdom for people who may never see the inside of a church. There, you are on a mission field just as real as the missionaries we send overseas. You

But they are in bondage to the lust of the flesh, and all the evils that Paul lists here as acts of the sinful nature. We are fighting againstthese forces constantlysays Paul, and the only way we can win this conflict is to be led of the spirit, and to produce the fruit of the spirit. Let's face it, this is a David againstGoliath conflict. Work and sex gets 8 hours a day 5 days a week, and worship and love gets one or two hours a week. It is not just the kids who face these odds. Many watch dozens of hour of secularTV for every hour they are in Sunday School. No wonderthey know more about Hollywood stars and cartooncharacters thanthey do about biblical characters. But the adults have the same unfair odds, and they are swamped with secularsex all week, and then they geta smattering of sacredlove on Sunday. The only hope for the Christian underdog in this lopsided battle is to do what David did against Goliath. He came up with a specialweaponthat was superiorto the armor of Goliath. He took his sling and five smoothstones, and one stone did the job and the underdog won. In a very real sense Paulis saying that the fruit of the Spirit is to us what those stones were to David. And maybe in any particular conflictone of them also will do the job and give us the victory. temple of the Holy Spirit Questionfrom dr. charles lastrapes on 7/22/2001: I have always been taught that "I am the temple of the Holy Spirit". Dr. Charles Lastrapes Answer by Richard Geraghty on 8/2/2001: DearDr. Charles, You are quite correctin pointing out the teaching that human beings are the temples of the Holy Spirit. This places greatemphasis on the body itself. The dignity of the body is also brought out by the fact that God took on a body through Mary at the Nativity. Also important in the effort to remember the dignity of the human body is the fact that the corpse is brought into Church to be blessedand that it is given a decent Christian buriel. This brings out the notion that the body is the vehicle of the soul. Further, the fact that at the last day the body will be reunited to the soul againplaces greatemphasis upon the dignity of the body. The point is that the more that people pay attention to the Church, the more they will pay attention to the dignity of the human body. Dr. Geraghty As a little boy sat in church, his eyes were drawn to a large flag mounted on the wall, with a number of gold stars attachedto it. He whispered to his father, “Daddy, why does that flag have all those stars on it?” His dad whispered back, “To remind us of all those

Answer: The apostle Paul clearly taught that we receive the Holy Spirit the moment we receive Jesus Christ as our Savior. First Corinthians 12:13 declares, “For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.” Romans 8:9 tells us that if a person does not possess the Holy Spirit, he or she does not belong to Christ: “You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ.” Ephesians 1:13-14 teaches us that the Holy Spirit is the seal of salvation for all those who believe: “Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession—to the praise of his glory.” These three passages make it clear that the Holy Spirit is received at the moment of salvation. Paul could not say that we all were baptized by one Spirit and all given one Spirit to drink if not all of the Corinthian believers possessedthe Holy Spirit. Romans 8:9 is even stronger, stating that if a person does not have the Spirit, he does not belong to Christ. Therefore, the possessionof the Spirit is an identifying factor of the possessionof salvation. Further, the Holy Spirit could not be the “seal of salvation” (Ephesians 1:13-14) if He is not received at the moment of salvation. Many scriptures make it abundantly clear that our salvation is secured the moment we receive Christ as Savior.
  • 47. In conclusion, how do we receive the Holy Spirit? We receive the Holy Spirit by simply receiving the Lord Jesus Christ as our Savior (John 3:5-16). When do we receive the Holy Spirit? Just as you have to chooseto trust in Jesus as your Savior, so you have to chooseto be filled with the Spirit. You receive the Spirit when you trust in Jesus as Savior, but he does not yet control all your thoughts and actions. It is a process by which you become filled. It is a choice that has to be consistent. JACK HYLES LET OR WILL Light is given to this truth in Philippians 2:5, "Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus." The key word in this verse is "let." In other words, we are to "allow" the mind of Christ to come into us. Though this occasion changes us, it is not the beginning of the mind of Christ. The only thing new is that His mind has entered into us. That little word "let" is one of the most important words in the Bible. God has so much for us if we will "let" Him do what He wills. Romans 12:1 explains this, "I beseech you
  • 49. therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service." The word "present" or "yield" carries the same connotation as the word `let.'" God will do His work in us if we will LET HIM. I had been preaching for many years. I knew that the Holy Spirit lived in me. The Bible said so. I even taught the doctrine, but I had never one time spoken a word to the Holy Spirit. Though I realized He lived in my body, and knew my body was His dwelling place, I had never accepted Him as a person. Yes, He provided; yes, He assured; yes, He comforted; yes, He strengthened; yes, He taught. Though I was aware of these marvelous works in my life, I never accepted Him as a person or received Him as such. One day I was preaching on a radio broadcast. I was standing behind the pulpit of my small church in east Texas. My coat was half off, my collar was unbuttoned, and my tie was draped around my neck as I was preaching in the early morning hours to a radio audience from behind the pulpit of my empty church building. That morning I said to my radio audience, "The Holy Spirit lives in you. He hears what you say. He knows what you do. He sees where you go. He knows how you are dressing this morning." I began to tremble. I realized for the first time that He saw me and that He was a person. I finished the broadcast, I fell to my knees, lifted my voice to God and looked heavenward as I said, "Dear Holy
  • 50. Spirit, forgive me. I have never spoken to You. Doctrinally I knew you lived in me, but I have never accepted You as a person. I have never reckoned that You were part of my life in a practical way. I accept you today." My life has changed! I have never been the same! I went out to my car to drive home for breakfast. I bowed beside the car and said, "Holy Spirit, lead me to know the route that I should take as I drive home." I then included Him in every decision that I had to make. I asked Him to help me when I went shopping. I asked Him to lead me in every area of my life. There has not been one day from that day until this when I have neglected to say a word to the Holy Spirit. To me He is a person. He not only lives in my body, but I accept Him as such. I acknowledge His presence. I talk to Him. I seek His guidance in even the smallest of decisions. In summary, dear reader, when you accepted Jesus and asked Him to come into your life, He had with Him another member of the Godhead. As Jesus entered, this other member silently entered. Perhaps you did not realize it, or perhaps you realized it and have never taken time to accept this other member for what He really is. JACK HYLES, " QUIET AND GENTLE SPIRIT
  • 51. There are three enemies of the Christian: the world, the flesh and the Devil, but the Holy Breath, or the Holy Spirit is blowing the other way. When we yield to Him, He quietly, as a soft wind, controls our lives. Of course, the key word is YIELD! It is true that sometimes the Holy Spirit blows like a tornado, hurricane or a mighty gale, but normally He blows very quietly and goes about His work of directing the affairs of our lives in a very quiet, unobstructive manner. A seed is planted in the ground. It is not seen, but it is doing its work. There is no fanfare, no noise and nothing visible, but one day soon a little plant opens the earth and pushes its way out. This is the way the Holy Spirit works in His normal ministry. A seed is planted and then one day we begin to notice its fruit. A germ enters the body. The germ is not seen and the person does not immediately have symptoms of an illness or disease. This does not, however, mean that the germ is not working. The germ goes about its work in a quiet way, then come the chills, the headache, the fever, the sore throat, etc. The Holy Spirit works much the same way in his normal operation. A prescription is given for medicine to fight the germ. The medicine is taken. There is no immediate sign that it has helped, but it does its work as quietly as did the germ. The medicine fights the infection and then, after some hours or
  • 52. maybe even days, the patient feels better. Notice that he felt quite the same when he first took the medicine, but by faith he took it. When a person comes to Christ and yields to Him by faith, he may or may not feel differently. The main thing is: Did he trust the finished work of the Saviour? The Holy Spirit quietly enters. If you ask the person if the Holy Spirit is within him, he may say, "I don't know." (If he does answer in the affirmative, it is simply because somebody has told him or he has read it in the Bible and believed it). Then soon evidences of the Holy Spirit begin to appear. There is a desire to read the Bible, a desire to pray, a lessening desire for things of the world. What has happened? The Holy Spirit was doing His quiet work. When a couple first hears the news that a baby is coming, it is exciting and thrilling. However, the wife was expecting weeks before they found out about it. The evidence and manifestation came later. This is not to say that instantaneous, overwhelming demonstrations of the Holy Spirit never happen. Quite to the contrast! Some marvelous instantaneous victories have dotted the ministry of this preacher, but for every one like that, there have been hundreds of sweet, calm conversions and decisions whose geniuses has been proven by the fruit that they bore in subsequent days, weeks and years.
  • 53. In the same manner of salvation there are often startling, Saul-of-Tarsus-like conversions, whereas most conversions are more like Matthew, who simply left all and followed Jesus. Over a quarter of a century ago as I went soul winning one night in Garland, Texas, I made two visits. The first visit was very spectacular. The man received Christ. When he did, he jumped up, hugged his wife, shouted, hugged the children, clapped his hands, humped up on the sofa and had a real spell! My, what a time we had! I left the place praising God for His wonderful power. I then drove across town and visited another man. He came to the door. I told him who I was. He said, "Sit down." But he didn't sit down! He stood up leaning against the door. (I did not know until later that he had a bad back). He was as matter of fact as a person could be. In fact, he was a bit abrupt and nearly rude at times. I said, "Sir, do you know if you died tonight you would go to Heaven?" He replied, "No!" I said, "Would you like to know?" He replied, "Yes!" I told him the plan of salvation as best I could and showed him in the Bible the wonderful story of Christ. Then I asked him, "Do you realize that you are a sinner?" Abruptly he replied, "Yes!" I asked him, "Do you know if you died tonight, you would go to hell?" Without any emotion at all he replied, "Yes!" I then asked, "Do you realize Jesus Christ came to the earth as a virgin- born Son of God, lived a perfect life, fulfilled the law, went
  • 54. to the cross, bore your sins in His body, was buried and rose again after three days and three nights?" He abruptly said, "Yes." I then asked, "Do you believe that if you would receive Him as your Saviour by faith now, that He would make you His child?" He said, "Yes!" All of this transpired in the coldest, most unemotional manner that you cam imagine. I said, "Could we kneel and pray?" He said, "You kneel. I have a bad back." He leaned against the door. I prayed. I asked him to pray. He said as coldly as anybody could ever say in a prayer, "Lord, be merciful to me a sinner and save my soul. Amen." I felt nothing but doubt, and so I said, "Sir, were you sincere?" He replied coldly, "Yes." I asked, "Where would you go if you died now?" Matter-of- factly he replied, "Heaven." I said, "How do you know?" He looked at me through stern-looking eyes and said, "The Bible says it, doesn't it?" I said, "Yes, and if you're sincere, you got it." I walked away from the house filled with doubt about his sincerity. The first man who shouted came to church the next Sunday and was baptized. He lasted about four weeks. The last man, whom I doubted, has now for 25 years been a faithful, loyal servant of God.
  • 55. Walvooard, "The present tense clearly indicates a durative idea, and could be translated, “keep being filled.” The contrast with the state of intoxication mentioned in the verse is patent. Instead of being constantly in a state of being drunk with wine, the entire faculties of the body being subject to its power and influence, the Christian should be constantly filled with the Spirit. The present imperative is regularly used in the New Testament to express this durative idea, and it cannot be doubted that it is of great significance here. Its major contribution is to bring out clearly the contrast between the baptism of the Spirit and the filling of the Spirit, the confusion of which has been the weakness of many studies on the Holy Spirit. A study of 1 Corinthians 12:13, reveals that the word baptize, ἐβαπτίσθημεν, is found in the aorist, an action which takes place once and for all. In contrast to this, there is the continuous ministry of the Holy Spirit in filling." The use of the present tense in the command to be filled with the Spirit makes it evident that this work of the Spirit is a continuous reality in those who are yielded to God. It is a moment-by-moment relationship which may be hindered by sin. It is not a question of a so-called “second work of grace” or any epochal experience. While the outward evidence of the fullness of the Spirit may vary, the abiding reality is intended by God to be the normal experience of His own. It is only as the Christian experiences the present reality of the fullness of the Spirit that the full-orbed ministry of the Spirit may be realized." The Scriptures bear a decisive testimony that the filling of the Holy Spirit is a repeated experience. The early church was filled with the Spirit on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:4). In Acts 4:8, Peter is mentioned as again being filled with the Holy Ghost, and the entire
  • 56. company gathered at Jerusalem to hear Peter’s report of his encounter with the Sanhedrin are again filled with the Holy Ghost (Acts 4:31). Stephen, originally chosen a deacon because he was filled with the Spirit, is revealed to have been “full of the Holy Ghost” immediately before his martyrdom (Acts 7:55). Both Paul and Barnabas are found filled with the Holy Spirit at widely differing periods of their lives (Acts 9:17; 11:24; 13:9, 52). The evidence for the experimental nature of the filling of the Holy Spirit is fully sustained in every instance. The filling of the Holy Spirit in every respect stands in sharp contrast to the ministries of regeneration, indwelling, sealing, and baptism, which are accomplished once and for all at the time of salvation." In 1 Thessalonians 5:19, the command is given, “Quench not the Spirit.” In Ephesians 4:30, another command is found, “And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealedunto the day of redemption.” A third command is recordedin Galatians 5:16, ”This I saythen, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.” These three Scriptures provide a divinely- inspired outline of the conditions for the filling of the Holy Spirit. While there are many aspects to the spiritual life and experience, all will be found to be related to these simple commands. The importance of these Scriptures as the key to unlocking the truth of the conditions for the filling of the Holy Spirit cannot be overemphasized. It is a sad commentary upon much so-called exhortation that it deals with the externals rather than the primary causes for defeatand spiritual apathy. As one turns to this important subject, it must be with a new realization that herein is one of the most important doctrines of the Scripture.
  • 57. THE MOST IMPORTANT VERSE IN THE NEW TESTAMENT! Well known pastor and author Charles Swindoll made this statement... I don’t know of a more important verse in the New Testament for the Christian than Ephesians 5:18— honest, no exaggeration. JOHN WALVOOARD "From the standpoint of practical value to the individual Christian, no field of doctrine relating to the Holy Spirit is more vital than the subject of the filling of the Spirit. It has been greatly neglected in the average theology, along with other practical applications of doctrine." SWINDOLL GOES ON, "This verse tells the believer how to live an authentic, empowered life: “And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit.” It begins with a negative command: “Don’t get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation” (which means excess, existing hopelessly out of control). When you’re drunk with alcohol, you lose control. You also lose
  • 58. self-respect and the respect of others. “Don’t get drunk.” A positive commandfollows: “But be filled with the Spirit.”...This is a command, not a suggestion. It’s an urgent imperative, not a casual option...“Be filled” is a command, which means I play a part in it. For example, I cannot be filled with the Spirit while I have unconfessed sin within me. I cannot be filled with the Spirit while at the same time conducting my life in the energy of the flesh. I cannot be filled with the Spirit while I am resisting God’s will and relying only on myself. I need to be sure that I have taken care of the sins that have emerged in my life, that I have not ignored the wrong that I have done before God and to others. I need to walk in conscious dependence on the Lord on a daily basis. Many a morning I begin my day by sitting on the side of the bed, saying: This is your day, Lord. I want to be at Your disposal. I have no idea what these next twenty-four hours will contain. But before I sip my first cup of coffee, and even before I get dressed, I want You to know that from this moment on throughout this day, I’m Yours, Lord. Help me to lean on You, to draw strength from You, and to

I can’t make it happen. And so I’m saying, Lord, fill me with Your Spirit today. I challenge you to begin every day with a similar prayer. “Lord, today, enable me to live out the authentic Christian life for Your glory.” Customize it with your own details depending on what may be the needs of that particular day. JOHN WALVOOARD , "The diversity of spiritual experience can, therefore, be traced to the two factors of the fullness of the Spirit and spiritual maturity. Of the two, the fullness of the Spirit is by far the most important in spiritual experience. All the ministries of the Spirit may be known by the immature Christian if he is living in proper adjustment to the Spirit. The fruit of the Spirit is intended by God to be produced in any Christian in whom the Spirit has full sway. The evident fact that many Christians never know the full-orbed ministry of the Spirit in their own lives constitutes a challenge to the church
  • 60. and its ministry to proclaim this important aspect of truth." HOLY SPIRIT, infilling A walk in the Spirit will of necessitybe a walk in accordancewith the Wordthe Spirit has inspired. The parallelbetween Eph 5:18-21 and Col 3:15-17is significant. The same results are said to flow from being filledwith the Spirit in the first cast, and being filledwith the Wordin the second. To remain filled with the Spirit, and thus enjoy His continuing sanctifyingwork, will mean continuingto be filled with the Word. The relationshipis obvious. J.O. Sanders, Enjoying Intimacy with God, Moody, p. 91. Now in Ephesians 5:18, the illustrationof becoming drunk indicates a progressiveprocess. Each drink brings a man closer to drunkenness. Whena man is drunk, then we say he is full of wine or strong drink.
  • 61. Likewise, the Spirit progressivelygains control of our lives so that others notice when we are full of the Spirit. 4. The meaning of “filled” is control:“… to exercise restrainingor directing influence over … ” (Webster’s Dictionary). It is a command. This is not an optionbut a clear statement of the will of God for all believers. The bottom line is that Paul commands us to be spiritually mature, which is the same as saying, “be filled by the Spirit.” Whatdoes it mean to be filledwith the Spirit? It means to be a mature, ChristlikeChristianwho exhibits the fruit of the Spirit! JOHN PIPER
  • 62. I think being filled with the Spirit means, basically, having great joy in God. And since the Bible teaches that “the joy of the Lord is our strength” (Nehemiah 8:10), it also means there will be power in this joy for overcomingbesetting sins and for boldness in witness. But, basically, it means radiantjoy, becausethe Spirit who fills us is the Spirit of joy that flows between God the Father and God the Son because of the delight they have in each other. Therefore, to be filled with the Spirit means to be caught into the joy that flows among the Holy Trinity and to love God the Father and God the Son with the very lovewith which they love each other. “To be filledwith the Spirit means to be caught into the joy that flows among the Holy Trinity.” The contrastwith drunkenness is the key here. What do people go to alcoholfor? For a happy hour. We all want to be happy
  • 63. The fundamental meaning of being filled with the Spirit is being filled with joy that comes from God and overflows in song. And Luke would agree with that, too, becausehe says in Acts 13:52, “The discipleswere filledwith joy and with the Holy Spirit.” So I repeat, whatever joy or peace you find in alcohol, the Spirit of God can give you more. Even the psalmist of the Old Testament had experienced this. He says in Psalm4:7– 8: You [O Lord] have put more joy in my heart than they have when their grain and wine abound. In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety. Why do people want to get drunk? They want to feel happy and alcoholrelieves them of stress and negative thinking. They can relax and feel a sense of freedom from all care. It is an escape from reality.Butin their drunken state they lose control and do stupic things that hurt and even kill them and others. Don'tdo that says Paul, but instead face reality which is filled with joy and all the reasons to sing and rejoice

Instead, be filled with the Spirit, speakingto one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Psalm95:2 Let us enter His presence with thanksgiving;let us make a joyful noise to Him in song. ps 100:2 King James Bible Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing. • 65. Serve the LORD with gladness; come before Himwith joyful songs. . Dr. Dan Hayden "Years ago when our children were small, I would come home to squeals of excitement— “Daddy, Daddy!”—and they would come running to jump into my arms. There was passion in their response, and I loved it! Now that is what the Psalmist tells us to do—to come before the Lord with joyful expressions of how thankful we are for Him." CONTROL IS A KEY ISSUE. Here is my final definitionof the fillingof the Spirit: It is that state in which the Holy Spirit is free to do all that he came into my life to do. The key word is “state.” The filling of the Spirit is not primarilyan emotional experience, and it’s certainlynot reserved for a few super-Christians.It’s nothing more than the normal Christianlife when the Holy Spirit is in control. Here’s my definitionof the fillingof the Spirit. It’s what happens when the Holy Spirit has the controlling interest in your life. Go back to the contrastbetween

Their lives and their behaviorare radically changed by that which fills them. --If a man is filled with anger, then anger controls his life. --If a man is filled with greed, then greed dominates his life. --If a man is filled with love, then love influences all he does. When the Holy Spirit fills you, he will have the controllinginterest in your life. It is “control by consent.” Being filledwith the Holy Spirit doesn’t mean I have more of the Spirit, it means the Spirit has more of me. It doesn’t happen all at once any more than you get drunk all at once. Being filledwith the Spirit happens as you continuallychooseto live under his influence. You do not become an alcoholicby taking a drink, but by continuousdrinking, and so it is with the Holy
  • 67. Spirit. Fillingis not an event, but a process of yielding to the Spirit in thought and action. We need to be filled again and again We could legitimatelytranslatethis verse this way: “Be continuallyfilledwith the Holy Spirit.” Wuest translatesit as “Be constantlycontrolledby the Spirit.” John MacArthur says we could translateit literallywith somethinglike “Be being kept filled with the Spirit.” The Amplified catches the present tense this way: “But ever be filled and stimulatedwith the (Holy) Spirit.” The filling of the Spirit is supposedto be the normal way of life for the Christian. To quote Dr MacArthur - "If we do not obey this command (be filledwith the Spirit), we cannotobey any other—simplybecausewe cannot do any of God’s will apart from God’s Spirit. Outside of the command for unbelieversto trust in Christfor salvation, there is no more practical and necessarycommand in Scripture than the one for believers to be filledwith the Spirit."
  • 68. ILLUSTRATION OUR DESPERATENEED FOR FILLING BY COMPARINGTO A WORKGLOVE – The glove has purpose (just as do we - Eph 2:10-note) but cannot fulfill its intended purpose unless it has an "indwelling"hand to enable it, to give it the direction (desire) and the power (cp the Spirit in Phil 2:13-note). Plainlyput, the glove by itselfcan do nothing (cp Jesus' words in John 15:5 where "nothing" in Greek is the strongest way to say "absolutelynothing"… O yes, we can even do "religiousworks" that look very good to others and garner their adulation, but such fleshly empowered works yield no fruit for eternity - cp Jn 15:16). The picture of a glove's need to continually depend on the indwellinghand directly applies to our Christianlife, which is not to be a natural (explicable) life, but a supernatural(marvelouslyinexplicable)life! We like the glove need to be continuallyfilledwith the Spirit, controlledby and empowered by the indwelling Spirit, if we are to accomplishanything supernatural. As we have repeatedly said, we CANNOTKEEP ONE COMMAND of the NT by relying on our natural, fleshly strength. We must continually, even moment by moment, deny our old self and seek the newness of the Spirit's work. We must continuallyrenounce self
  • 69. effort, self reliance, self sufficiency(do you see the "key word"?)and insteadmake the conscious, volitional choice(the choice of our will, even that choice mysteriouslybeing energized by the indwelling Spirit!!) to rely wholly on the Holy Spirit. This practice is of renouncing and relying will go on all day long, all the days of our life! It's what theologicallyis known as progressivesanctification. WhileJesus was the basis of justification, the Spirit was His "Chief Operating Officer" applying the finishedwork of the Cross of Christto our heart when we believedin Jesus. Similarly, in progressivesanctification, the Spirit is the "CEO" and gives us the desireand the power (Php 2:13NLT-note)to continuallywalk by the Spirit (Gal 5:16 - to be more fully discussedin our next lesson). In sum, apart from the Spirit of Christ fillingus (bearing us along, permeating us so that Christflavors all we say, do and think [cp 2Cor2:14- 16] and controllingus – like rage or anger controls us - read Luke 4:28-29, Lk 6:11)we can do nothing of eternal value!Absolutelynothing! The pride of our fallenflesh chafes at that truth and will until the day we die!

Every Christian faces the obvious fact that no man can serve two masters or lords (Matt 6:24). It is impossible to enter into the
  • 76. present joys of salvation without accepting the Savior as Lord, but this is a truth to be apprehended in experience as well as in doctrine. Accordingly Christians are constantly exhorted to yield themselves to God. In Romans 6:13, the exhortation is found, “Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.” The Greek word for yield is found in two tenses in this verse which illustrates clearly that the appeal is to a yielding to God which is accomplished once for all. Dr. Lewis Sperry Chafer has summed the issue concisely: “A yieldedness to the will of God is not demonstrated by some one particular issue: it is rather a matter of having taken the will of God as the rule of one’s life. To be in the will of God is simply to be willing to do His will without reference to any particular thing He may choose. It is electing His will to be final, even before we know what He may wish us to do. It is, therefore, not a question of being willing to do some one thing: it is a question of being willing to do anything, when, where and how, it may seem best in His heart of love. It is taking the normal and natural position of childlike trust which has already consented to the wish of the Father even before anything of the outworking of His wish is revealed.” BARCLAY, " "You've got to fill a man with something." The heathen found his happiness in filling himself with
  • 77. wine and with worldly pleasures; the Christian found his happiness in being filled with the Spirit. From this passagewe can gather certain facts about the Christian gatherings in the early days. (i) The early Church was a singing Church. Its characteristic was psalms and hymns and spiritual songs; it had a happiness which made men sing. WAYNE BARBER, "God lives in us. We have all of God we are ever going to get. Isn’t that wonderful? Now God wants to control us from within. He wants all of us. That is the key. The key is not getting any more of God. The key is God getting more and more of us. Singing, as here meant, is a direct and solemn act of worship, and should be considered such as really as prayer. In singing we should regard ourselves as speaking directly to God, and the words, therefore, should be spoken with a solemnity and awe becoming such a direct

If this be the true nature and design of public psalmody, then it follows (1.) that all should regard it as an act of solemn worship in which they should engage--in heart at least, if they cannot themselves sing. Spirit as involving confession of sin, surrender of will, surrender of intellect, surrender of body, surrender of time, surrender of talents, surrender of desires, and surrender of possessions. Romans 12:1-2 drew a picture of what it meant to be constantly "be being filled" with the Spirit of God. In this passage Paul writes… 12:1 I urge you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship.2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect. A man can be filled with many things. He can be filled with rage. He can be filled with jealousy. He can be filled with envy. He can be filled with a lot of things, but Paul says, "Be filled with the Spirit of God. Be under His control. Be satisfied with Him and only Him. Be dominated by the presence of the Holy God that lives in your hearts."
  • 80. wayne barber . "But I believe the Apostle Paul gives us the three major effects, the three major symptoms of a person being filled with the Spirit of God in verses 19-21. That is what I want us to look at. THE SPIRIT FILLED LIFE: SINGING There will be three symptoms that will come upon an individual who is constantly being filled, controlled by, the already indwelling Spirit of God. The first one is found in verse 19—singing is a result of being filled with the Spirit of God: "speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord." That’s a Spirit-filled life. What does that mean? That means a life where every room of the heart, where the Spirit lives, has been opened up. Jesus in His light and love and life has permeated those rooms. Out of that heart, that has been cleansed by His blood and filled with His presence, comes a song to the lips and to the mind. It is always there. Singing is just something that erupts in a
  • 81. person’s life who is filled with the Spirit of God. Something about the Holy Spirit produces that music in a person’s heart. That doesn’t mean you can carry a tune, it simply means that you can make a joyful noise. There is a song in your heart. A person says, "Well, I have a great ability to sing. That must mean that I am filled with the Spirit." No. People who can’t carry a tune can make a joyful sound. It doesn’t mean that you can sing as well as other people. It means that you’ve got a song in your heart. It means that somehow music now fills up your life and there is something that makes sense in your life. There is just that song that erupts out of your heart. Psalm 40 says, "I waited patiently upon the Lord. He heard my cry of distress. He lifted me out of the miry clay, put my feet upon a rock and put a brand new song in my heart." That is always the way it is. It is a new song, a fresh song. It is something that God puts within your soul.
  • 82. Now Paul explains among whom, how, from where and to whom Spirit-filled believers are to sing. Let’s work our way through verse 19 and see what he has to say. First of all, he says among whom: "speaking to one another." Do you realize that the literal means "speaking to yourselves," referring to believers as a community? I want to share something with you. All through Scripture you are going to find that music, music that exalts God, music that exalts Christ, music that praises Him is never, ever meant for the unbeliever. It is always meant for the believer. So often we use music as an evangelistic tool. That doesn’t mean it can’t be used that way, but that is not its original purpose. It was intended to be amongst yourselves. It was for believers when we come together. Folks, what goes on when we come together is unique to any other gathering on the face of this earth. Do you realize that? There is not one single thing you can go to outside of a church gathering when brothers and sisters are together singing praises to God, celebrating the Lord Jesus Christ, that is anything close to that. You see, this is what it’s for. That is why we sing. I hear people say sometimes,
  • 83. "Well, we ought to have less singing and more preaching." Are you kidding me? There is a balance in this thing. Folks, I want to sing, don’t you? I want to get with brothers and sisters singing the praises unto God. It was intended for believers and it was intended for praise and exaltation of our Lord. So among whom are we to sing? It is among ourselves. Secondly, how are we to sing? First of all he mentions psalms. Obviously, of course, there is the book of Psalms and it is a hymnbook. The book of Psalms is wisdom literature, and they were songs that were sung back to the Lord. We have hymns that exalt God. The word "psalm" has the idea of playing music with strings. In other words, it is with an instrumental accompaniment. The word "psalm" means to sing songs to the accompaniment of music, stringed or whatever else, instrumental music. That is the way they would sing the psalm. That was a part of their worship in the early days of the church at Ephesus that has evolved right into today. It usually reflected the nature and the
  • 84. work of God especially in the life of believers. They were sung again with musical accompaniment. The word "hymns" however, was a little different word. The hymns, from all the study that I could do, refer primarily to the songs of praise which, in the early church, did not just exalt God, but exalted His Christ, the Son of God, the One who is the embodiment of the Godhead fully. They exalted Christ, whereas the psalms evolved from way back and exalted the Godhead. The hymns would lift up and exalt the Lord Jesus. There are many people who think that a lot of pieces of the New Testament, a lot of things that are said, are taken right out of some of the early Christian songs or hymns that were sung in the church. HYMNS ARE WHAT I WROTEAS A PASTOR. I COMPOSED OVER TWO HUNDRED HYMNS AND OUR PIANIST PUT THEM TO MUSIC TO SING IN CHURCH. MOST OF THEM WERE SUNG TO TUNES THAT WE ALREADYKNEW FROM FAMILIAR HYMNS

It is that music that comes forth from that. So what is the first symptom of the Spirit-filled life? It is not speaking in tongues. It is not doing miracles. The first symptom he says is singing and making melody in your heart, singing to the Lord. Isn’tthat incredible? That is always a symptom of a person filled with the Spirit of God. "The joy of the Lord is your strength " (Nehemiah 8:10). Jesus was the most joy-filled person ever to live on this planet. We are told this in Hebrews 1:9, where it says of
  • 87. Christ, “…your God, has set you above your companions by anointing you with the oil of joy.” In other words, there has never been another above Jesus in joy. He had the highest level of joy possible, and none has never matched it. An apple is an apple, and a pear is a pear, but not all apples and pears are equal. Some are better than others. They are bigger, juicier, and sweeter than others. So it is with joy, and all the fruits of the Spirit. They grow like fruit, and so there are all different stages of growth. Jesus had the perfect fruit of joy. This is what all believers will have in heaven. This was the hope of even the Old Testament saints. David says in Psalm 16:11, “You will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasure at your right hand.” Until then, the goal of the Christian is to be filled with the Spirit, and get as near to having the joy of Jesus as possible. The New Testament has 11 words for different aspects of joy, and they are used 326 times. It is a major theme of God’s Word, and a major obligation of the Christian life. There is a wealth of English synonyms for joy-bliss, buoyancy, cheerfulness, delight, ecstasy, elation, exuberance, felicity, gaiety, gladness, glee, hilarity,
  • 88. jubilation, rapture, and rejoicing. All of these can be summedup in the word happy, which the New Testament calls blessed. Vernon Grounds, the well known evangelical theologian, commenting on Paul’s declaration in I Tim.6:15, that God “is the blessed and only Potentate or Ruler”, says, “Since blessed means happy, Paul is here affirming that God is happy. The Happy God! God in Himself is a shoreless sea of vibrant glory, a fathomless ocean of sheerest ecstasy…God Himself is the Rejoicer who before the hosts of heaven reacts with a thrilling happiness that baffles the language and logic of earth. Infinitely joyful, He is the Source of all genuine joy.” Does this mean the Christian has to be a pollyanna, and be blind to the reality of a fallen world? Not at all, God knows the evil of man like no other, but He is by nature happy and joyful, inspite of His knowledge. Joy is not a denial of evil and a pretense that all is well. It is a conviction that life is a comedy and not a tragedy, and that in Christ good will triumph over evil. History is His- story, and it will have a happy ending.

He wrote, “This is a cheerful world as I see it from my fair garden…But if I could ascend some high mountain and look out over the wide lands, you know very well what I would see. Brigands on the highways. Pirates on the seas. Armies fighting. Cities burning. In the amphitheatres men murdered to please applauding crowds. Selfishness and cruelty, and misery and despair, under all roofs. It is a bad world, Donatus, an incredibly bad world. But I have discovered in the midst of it, a quiet and holy people who have learned a great secret. They have found a joy which is a thousand

These people, Donatus, are Christians, and I am one of them.” There is no blindness here to evil, but eyes wide open to the good news in Christ which produces the joy that overcomes the world. The Christian deals with his fallen nature in a different way than the world does. Leslie Flynn and his book, Gift of Joy, says the way the world deals with sin is to- 1. Minimize it. It is no big deal, everybody does it. 2. Rationalize it. They blame their genes, parents, or their mates, or the world situation. 3. Anesthetize it. By a constant round of activity, or by drugs. 4. Neutralize it. By doing good to counteract their bad.
