3. Reverse
Engineering of
Brake Disc
My work in design engineering started with reverse engineering of the
Apache RTR 180 Brake Disc.
My assignment in the Baja Team (From college) was to design a 4-
mount version based off the stock 3-mount for our buggy.
3-mount would be good enough for a bike but for a buggy 4-mount will
be better so as to distribute the load more evenly.
I was given the CAD file of the disc along with a disc. I made a basic
sketch of the disc on Autodesk Inventor by taking dimensions from the
CAD file as well as the disc.
To get the slots at correct size, shape, it took quite a while to propagate
the design from available CAD file and the actual brake to the main
design.
After all this was the time to get the FEA done and compare the results.
5. Knuckle for Buggy
With the same competition I started with my first
product development along with my team mates. It
was to develop knuckle or the buggy.
The knuckle is a part of the suspension that attaches
to the wheels through hub and to the chassis
through control arms. The steering tie rod and brake
callipers are mounted on this as well.
To develop the knuckle the I-centre data from a
suspension software, Lotus SHARK, was used to the
mounting points of control arms and tie rods.
From simple mathematical calculations mounting
points for the calliper was easy to define.
7. Re-engineering of Bladeless Wind
Turbine
My major project while is college was re-engineering of a bladeless wind turbine that utilises the
havocking vortex shedding effect of wind.
Whenever the oscillating flow of a fluid whenever it comes across a non-streamlined body. This
occurs only at certain speed for an object of a shape and size.
My goal was use the data provided from the company that invented the turbine and make a CFD
analysis of the same by making designs on CAD.
Final conclusion of the project is that vortex shedding occurs but isn’t strong enough to generate
electricity, with the winds in Hyderabad.
9. Phone Stand Development
We need our phones to have a proper communication or for entertainment all the time. Sometimes
using the phone while doing some other work is too hard as we have to hold the phone to properly
view the screen.
Most of those times are, while eating, working, cooking, etc. So I developed a phone stand that
stands out from the options in market.
Lightweight, biodegradable, low-cost, single finger usage, charging while on stand are key to the
design, with this mind I started the design.
After few weeks of designing and prototyping I came up with 3 designs to suit different needs of
people.
11. The three variations’ 3D printed prototypes
(Actual products are 3D printed as well, but, with better quality)
12. Development of Cutlery Strainer
Keeping kitchen hygienic is a hectic job, certainly maintaining the cutlery is. Throwing them around
randomly like in drawers or containers doesn’t really keep them hygienic, letting the water flow
instead of transpiring into air does that.
The one I designed is 3 hexagon set or a hive with slant bottoms and openings to let the water flow
out. The cutlery won’t sit straight and get to positing as if petals of flower in blossom, and that gives
them quite good angle to get rid of the water on them into the strainer where it flows out keeping the
cutlery dry.
Not only that, upon scaling this can be used as a clean clutter free pen stand.
15. In-progress
Phone Holder, a claw mechanism to hold the phone. The holder can be stuck to a surface using a
double sided tape.
Earphones’ Case, a case which keeps the earphones tangle free and protects from dust & splashes
while being compact.
3D Printed Wargame, a fun to play table top game which is an extension of chess where you are not
just fighting but doing many other kingly activities.
Water Atomiser, to save water we need to consume less water, that might seem impossible at first but
thinking how much water goes to waste while we use a types makes it possible. Using less water
usually means turning the tap ON only some, but this Water Atomiser enables you to have the water
pressure intact while giving you less but sufficient water.
